(or, The Most Loving Smile I Have Ever Seen)

Okay, okay, this is two expressions. Sorry, not sorry. Both are from Episode 14. The first is important to the second, which is my favorite expression.

My second-favorite expression is the perfectly incredulous look Kakeru gives Haiji when Haiji insists he chose Yuki to be on the team because of his superior ability to understand the science of running.

Look: By now Kakeru knows that Yuki moved in to Aotake at the same time Haiji did. Haiji didn’t choose shit about Yuki. Kakeru knows. 

Look at this face:

This is such a lovely moment! It shows Kakeru is coming in to his own understanding of Haiji, which Haiji may or may not realize. BUT IT IS FOLLOWED A FEW SCENES LATER BY THE BEST EXPRESSION THIS SERIES HAS TO OFFER.

It keys this expression up nicely because I think it shows that Kakeru is starting to realize that Haiji is kind of flying by the seat of his pants at points and making do with what he has. That Haiji struggles to make it seem like this is his Master Plan. That Haiji is perhaps worried they will all lose confidence if he doesn’t.

But that’s really admirable. That’s what makes a leader good, so long as they’re not absurd about it and can fess up when they make mistakes (unclear if Haiji can do this; it’s never really tested). And I think Kakeru sees that, too.

In the scene with THE BEST EXPRESSION, they’re all getting ready to run like fools behind a truck while Hana-chan dumps water on them. Prince is understandably suspicious of his ability to survive. Haiji rallies the troops and Kakeru stands up from stretching and flashes the most precious and understated smile I have ever seen in my life:

That is my favorite expression. This is my true shipper’s soul. Even if Haiji’s arm looks kinda wonky. The end.
