Austin, the Birthplace of Humanity

Though I spent my time in Houston basking in the lap of luxury, it was stressful.  I arrived at Sara’s house and surrounded by animal skulls, rock tumblers, rusty collected things, art I felt myself begin to relax in my native habitat.  A buffalo head is the centerpiece of her living room décor and she is a vegetarian who energetically cleansed it after finding it in a neighbor’s driveway.  Her morning evening yoga sessions and intentional consumption permeated the air in her dwelling, affecting me immediately and thoroughly; drawing me into my center.  Confronting life, death, art, comedy and cute dogs at every turn brought me into the core of my power as a human that is alive, a being that is participating in life. 

This is what art brings--a physical remnant of a sacred state of creator.  It can be priced high and sold to those with the most exclusive taste, but true art is priceless and only a whisper of the bliss trance meditation that one experienced in its birth unto this plane.  Sara’s environment was balm to my overextended soul, after months of creating to sell; of sucking every available drop of amrita from my well and slathering it onto silk for others to purchase.  Sara’s practice and consciousness refilled my cup.

Alastar had the most amazing dreams.  The buffalo, deer and antelope heads on Sara’s wall came alive and grew only legs.  A river of blood poured out of everything and onto everything and they only way to stop bleeding was to rest.  Trees knew how, some things knew how to take naps and stop the bleeding, but most things kept bleeding and bleeding....

I spent about two hours in Austin proper.  I do love music, but mostly it seemed that I would need to drink alcohol to fully experience and the pecan festival felt like an onslaught.  I was definitely there to experience Austin from Sara’s perspective.  She had lived there for over ten years and never went to the city.  Alastar and I took walks through her neighborhood and spent an evening at the lake near her house with other long time residents who never left the hills.

That Sunday we went with Sara on a sacred rock collecting mission.  We followed her to the most fantastic place called Get Well Farms.  Sean “Peppy” Meyer was living in Virginia and had an epiphany that he needed to move to Austin Texas, start a goat farm and create a sustainable lifestyle.  Five years later he has accomplished this and worlds more.  He is developing a youth farming program, goat yoga and has created a space for Austin’s spiritual community as well, tapping into the ancient spirit of this holy place. The website he is working on is www.goatmonthly.com for those who want to get involved....

He explained to me that Austin is composed of three volcanoes: Pilot Knob, McKinney Falls and Mount Inge.  The triangle of land between them is a holy place that some believe gave birth to humans.  Volcanic ash scattered throughout this area makes for incredibly fertile soil and the volcanic rocks scattered throughout have been used for sweat lodge ceremonies since time began.  This space used to be forest and now it has been cleared to build a housing development.

He explained that these sacred rocks were like the Earth’s blood as they are made from lava, red and hot, that spews forth from the innards of our planet.  Hence Alastar’s weekly psychic dream about the blood pouring out from everything and rest being the repose that only the trees understood...it was just about collecting rocks.

Our task that day was to collect as many rocks as we could.  We formed a caravan of trucks and drove out to the site, with a pit stop for chips and other disgusting snacks that made everyone seem entirely normal.  We arrived at a housing development--the once great forest, the source of humanity now boasting eco conscious green construction, master bedrooms for every member of the household and ultra current closet technology.  We formed a line and lifted rock after rock into the beds of the truck. 

This lovely group of people go through a lot of rocks.  When a lava rock is done being used for a sweat lodge, it lets you know; it gets a hollow feeling and cracks.  It gives its spirit and rests, as does the land we are living on now.  I remember traveling though the area in India where the Mahabarat took place.  It too was a forest that had been totally cleared and now hosted stinky little town, sewage, no trees, barely a whisper of what it had once been.  Our world is falling victim to a great homogenization.  As we worship the god of Reason for this age and thus assimilate everything into proven catergories, the substance of our spiritual and mythological landscape is bulldozed into an unrecognizable blank slate and reformed into comfortable conventional.  What does this contribute to?  Are we at the beginning again?  Cleaning our slate in preparation for new myths or just an ever deepening loss?  Everyone answers this question with what fills their heart.
