NYCSAFF: Kaamyaab Review
Tumblr media
November 20, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
In the past few years, the new technology and media has allowed the commercial film industries in India to evolve in numerous ways. There are more options for aspiring filmmakers to broadcast their work and better opportunities for actors. Writers are getting more credit and women are breaking barriers. Yet, the curse of being relegated to a side role remains. The fear of typecaste is not as omnipresent as it was earlier but it still exists. And the struggle of being one of those side actors is the essence of this film. Realizing he is one film short of the round figure of 500, supporting actor Sudheer (Sanjay Mishra), decides to come out of retirement, and find one memorable role, that will be the satisfying finish to his career. Along the way, he attempts to mend fragile relationships, and make new connections.
Kaamyaab is a treat for every Bollywood trivia junkie. It is an ode to the Kaalia’s and Mac’s of the industry, actors like Viju Khote, Iftekhar, Jagdish Raj, Mac Mohan, Keshto Mukherjee, and many others who have made a career out of playing the same side role in every film. Writer/Director Hardik Mehta has weaved together a heartwarming tale, of a man rediscovering his passion as he attempts to complete this one last film. This film is not about the 500th film. Its about a journey, triggered by the need for a 500th film, in which a side actor tries to regain the respect he deserves. These actors are renowned and respected, but constantly sidelined. In Kaamyaab, there is a scene when Sudheer interacts with the hero of the film in which he is playing a supporting role. While the hero gives Sudheer respect for being senior, it is clear that he is forcing the kind words, when in fact he believes himself to be above Sudheer due to his immense popularity with the masses. The industry is filled with many such people like this hero who give “fake” respect to senior actors, but don’t consider them on the same level of the hierarchy as they are. This film is just a mirror of the state of the film industry, which is why it resonates so strongly with the audience, many of whom are struggling artists themselves.
Sanjay Mishra doesn’t just excel in this role, he completely embodies the character. Essentially, he is playing himself. He has made a career out of films like Golmaal and All The Best, as a commercial comedy star. But he has worked hard to break the mold by choosing films like Aankhon Dekhi and Masaan, showcasing his versatility and ability to play leading roles. In this film, he is playing the man he would have been if he didn’t have the opportunity to get out of the niche he had created for himself. The man he would have been if he had been working in the same era as Viju Khote or Mac Mohan. His character, Sudheer, is someone who has spent his whole life rehashing the same acting style for similar roles, and after 499 films, is completely obliterated, in need of a fresh and more meaningful start for his final film.
A leading actor has money and fame, even if his/her personal life is in shambles. But a supporting actor has none. And he/she still pushes through. Sudheer has nothing. He has a troubled relationship with his daughter and a developing camaraderie with his neighbor. He struggles. He fails. But he never gives up. That’s the core message of this film. Because a supporting actor has one thing that many leading actors may never have. The grit to continue.

Searching for a movie-title!
Hi everybody! One of our fellow Tumblr-users asked me for the title to a movie they had seen in the past but can’t remember the name of it. Turns out I don’t know the movie and therefore can’t help myself. So please, read the following description and if you know the title, please put it in the comments or send me a message! It’s so frustrating to search for a movie you like but can’t find. The description says:
“Hi can you please help me find the name of the comedy movie in which the heroine is in debt and the vamp of the movie sends a sethji to her house at the same time her husband also comes she hides the sethji in the cupboard where he dies she then puts the body next to the neighbours door in this way his body is passed through the entire bldg keshto Mukherjee and manorama were in the movie“
Do you have any ideas?

Tisari Kasam
Tisari Kasam
Tissari Kasam (The 3rd vow) is a 1966 Hindi film. It is directed by Basu Bhattacharya and is based on Fani Ray's Hindi story 'Mare Gaye Gulpham'. The film, starring Raj Kapoor and Wahida Rahman, is an unconventional short story. The film depicts pure rural life. The story of the Bihar state's rural backyard was beautifully crafted by a chariot driver, a dancer. The film highlights the current state of affairs in society, as well as the injustice done to women's society at the time.
Main acting--
Raj Kapoor played the lead role in "Hiram" in Tisri Kasam, while Wahida Rahman in the role of dancer "Hirabai" and Keshto Mukherjee, Iftikhar, A.K. Hangal and Asit Sen in the other lead roles.
Music--
Tisri Kasam was highly acclaimed for his story, acting, and construction. He also received national awards. However, commercially, the film failed.
Under the direction of Shankar Jayakishan, the music of the film was very melodious and based on folk music. Its "Sajanba Bairi Ho Gaye Hamar ....." was recognized as a super hit song.

After stand-up comic Bharti as Singh and her husband were arrested for drugs possession, one of India’s oldest and most respected stand-up artistes Raju Shrivastava condemned the culture of substance abuse.
“I am shocked at the way artistes today cross the laxman rekha. You can’t cross the line of decency. Of course I’m aware times have changed. Nonetheless stand-up comedians should not forget where they come from. We are Indians, so please don’t imitate American stand-up comedians.”
Raju finds it hard to believe that Bharti has confessed to consuming banned substance. “She is such a simple sweet goodhearted girl, so focused on her work, why does she need drugs to be effective? As a stand-up comedian for 40 years I have never touched any drugs or alcohol. Addiction to these can destroy the best of careers. Look at Rajesh Khanna, the biggest superstar ever. His career was destroyed in 7-8 years because of alcohol. Then look at the next superstar Amitabh Bachchan, still going great guns at 78. He doesn’t touch a drop of alcohol. The great comic actor Keshto Mukherjee played a drunkard in all his films. He never touched alcohol.”
Raju Shrivastava feels an entertainer needs no stimulant to perform and entertain. “Rafi Saab, Lataji ….did they ever touch any kind of stimulant to reach the summits that they did? We all need to learn from these greats. Bharti should know young girls look up to her as a role-model. What kind of an example as she setting by admitting that she smokes ganja? Let’s hope her career doesn’t go up in smoke. Yeh toh wahi baat ho gayi…Lalli ho gayi talli.”
