Writing isn't even an imperative for a large, state-based society either! The Incas had knotting instead and did just as well!
it's weird thinking about how hot meals / fire / cooking etc. are literally the only actual thing that's unique about humans vs other animals
like... obviously that doesn't preclude other species from evolving the ability to cook food or anything so
the day some other species figures out cooking will be an interesting day
