I base the Plesiosaurus off of the Kimmerosaurus from Planet Dinosaur. Luckily, unlike the individual from the documentary, it hasn’t been decapitated or had a limb torn off.

Nannopterygius enthekiodon
Tumblr media
Art by: Gareth Monger,  https://www.deviantart.com/gaffamondo/art/Nannopterygius-747734307
Name: Nannopterygius enthekiodon
Name Meaning: Small wing
First Described: 1922
Described By: von Huene
Classification: Chordata, Tetrapoda, Reptilia, ‬Ichthyosauria,‭ ‬‬Ophthalmosauria,‭ ‬Ophthalmosauridae
Nannopterygius was originally described to be another species of Ichthyosaurus so once again wastebasket taxonomy strikes, until von Huene determined this genus was totally distinguishable from Ichthyosaurus due to the examination of smaller frontal and hind flippers of Nannopterygius. Anyways, Nannopterygius was discovered in England’s Kimmeridge Clay Formation just like the plesiosaurs Kimmerosaurus and Colymbosaurus. Nannopterygius is closely related to Ophthalmosaurus and existed during the Middle to Late Jurassic. Nannopterygius probably dwelled in shallow seas. It was most likely a fast swimmer and was great at taking quick bursts of speed to ambush prey, however it wouldn’t have won a marathon for long distance swimming.

Kimmerosaurus langhami
Tumblr media
Art by: Nobu Tamura, CC BY-SA 4.0
Name: Kimmerosaurus langhami
Name Meaning: Kimmeridge lizard
First Described: 1981
Described By: Brown
Classification: Chordata, Tetrapoda, Reptilia, Sauropterygia,‭ ‬Plesiosauria, Plesiosauroidea, Cryptoclididae
Do you remember my old post on Colymbosaurus? Well, it’s a possibility that Kimmerosaurus may actually be a synonym for Colymbosaurus, as they might be the same animal. Why? Both plesiosaurs are found from the same formation, Kimmeridge Clay Formation of England. Also, it’s speculated that since we don’t have much of Kimmerosaurus in terms of its remains (we only have a skull and neck vertebrae), we don’t know what the full body plan of Kimmerosaurus and Colymbosaurus looked like. Anyways, Kimmerosaurus lived during the Late Jurassic Period.
