These are three of six Classic Pens LB5 Madreperlato prototypes, based on the Sailor King of Pen (or King Profit), made to test colors for the final production pens. During the prototyping process several customization decisions were made, including an increase in the overall length of the pen and choice of cap band and its decoration. The most visible customization would be the choice of material and colors for the cap and barrel. The color choice prototyping reveals some of the many decisions in how these pens came to be.

This is a complete set of Classic Pens LB5 prototype fountain pens photographed over the course of their introduction from 2012 and 2013. Left to right are Tensui (raindrops) in Space Blue, Tairiku (continent) in Marble White, Midorigi (new green trees) in Forest Green, Kaen (violent flames) in Flame Red, Kouseki (metal ore) in Diamond Brown, Tairiku (continent) in Amethyst Mauve, and Tensui (raindrops) in Space Blue with rhodium plated trim and nib. Each is made of Carville diffusion bonded acrylic and is a 6 1/16 inches long oversize cartridge / converter pen based on Sailor's top of the line King Profit, also known as King of Pen. The LB5 is ¼ inch longer than the standard King Profit because the barrel is longer. The cap band is a very wide, full to cap lip gold plated insert, engraved with SAILOR LB5 [model name] 00/50 around the entire band. Each color had 50 production pens each with an individual edition number on the band. The standard nib was a medium or broad 21 karat gold Sailor nib marked 1911 over 21K over 875 over the Sailor logo. The edition is sold out. #pencollecting #fountainpen #classicpens #lambroupens #artpen #sailor #sailorpen #sailorjapan #kingofpen #kingprofit #tairiku #kaen #midorigi #kouseki #tensui #tairiku #amethyst #penhero https://www.instagram.com/p/CLp6GjVD9oy/?igshid=hzinsx4xsr04

Each of the Classic Pens LB5 colors, Tensui (raindrops) in Space Blue, Tairiku (continent) in Marble White, Midorigi (new green trees) in Forest Green, Kaen (violent flames) in Flame Red, Kouseki (metal ore) in Diamond Brown, and and Tairiku (continent) in Amethyst Mauve was available with the Sailor Nagahara Cross Point nib, made by Master Nib Designer Nobuyoshi Nagahara. The Cross Point nib is created using two nibs crafted together into a double layer with two slits, one vertical and one and horizontal. This allows for both broad and fine strokes and a heavy ink flow. What's special about the LB5 Tensui Cross Point is that it has gold plated trim, and only a small number of these pens were made out of the total of 50 in that color. These pens are all sold out, so if you have one, you have a special pen, indeed.

There are two types of Classic Pens LB5 prototype cap bands. The original run of the LB5 was the Flame Red and Space Blue colors and the first prototypes have the original wide Sailor King of Pen (yes that is the spelling) cap band with no numbering. There were a couple of runs of those prototypes done to resolve an issue found where Sailor's black inner cap would show through the translucent diffusion bonded resin and needed to be corrected by using a clear inner cap. Prototypes were made to see how long the barrel should be and a longer barrel was decided. Several colors were tried, and some prototype pens made, until the complete set of six colors was decided. When the four final colors were made, the cap band for the LB5 was set, so the prototypes of those colors were all done as Amethyst Mauve 00/50, as shown here.
