kicking my feet giggling at the winter performance rehearsal dynamics of neji antagonizing the class for their own good, ignoring his own issues; kisa being the concerned angel who flocks to the people who need help in response, ignoring her own issues; and mitsuki flailing at trying to be a good senpai and using his kisa and neji radars as a crutch to figure out what obstacles to remove so the class can finally give him and kisa space to work out their problems (of course, this does not happen. so he's forced to improv onstage as rukiora. oh the irony of mitsu being a very private person, forced to resolve his personal relationship issues in front of an audience)

Tohru x Kyo

Oh gosh, this ship! The angst, the hurt/comfort moments, and then that moment, that glorious moment, where they finally confessed. It's one of the best ships I ever followed when I was a teen, and it's one I still ship hardcore to this day. Funnily enough though, the first time I read Fruits Basket I actually didn't like the ship. I was originally shipping Yuki x Tohru, but then Kyo's true form appeared and from that point on I gradually jumped from one ship to the other.

It's a beautiful ship about forgiveness, healing, seeing the good in the other, and moving forward to create a better future together while acknowledging the darkness and sadness they each go through [rather than ignoring or denying it]. I picked the gif above as their's because it's a summary of their dynamic: they've helped rid each other of of their tears (Kyo for feeling responsible for Kyoko's death and for being the cat of the zodiac, and Tohru for the grief towards her mother's death) and lift each other. Besides, I can't be the only one who can imagine Kyo just picking up Tohru and spinning her around when he's overwhelmed with happiness!!

Hiro x Kisa

Oh no, the cuteness!! Childhood friends to lovers...it's a trope probably over used in manga/anime but I still fall for it every single time. I admit Hiro and Kisa's relationship was not something I actively follow whenever I go back to watch/read Fruits Basket, but I can't deny how both utterly cute it can be, but also incredibly sad. Hiro holds so much guilt for something that was ultimately not his fault, and Kisa struggled with shyness and teasing from her classmates. Hiro's actions are understandable, he's only a kid afterall and doesn't know how to cope with not only the family curse but the overhwleming guilt for what happened to Kisa. After they reconnect, it's nice to see Hiro have a soft spot for Kisa, and for Kisa to be open with Hiro.

Edward x Winry

Oh damn this ship...it's a rollercoaster! We've got comical moments, we've got childhood friends to lovers, and we've got angst! Two of those three things are my ultimate weaknesses when it comes to ships, so of course I was going to ship these two! They get one of the best scenes in the whole series, (where Ed stops Winry from using the gun against Scar) one that I always tear up at when I go back to read or watch it.

The only nit-pic I have for the ship (and I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion) is the number of times Winry hits Ed. I know it's meant to be comical and not taken seriously (in that it doesn't affect the plot at all and is treated in the scene/s as if it didn't happen at all, it was just a way to show Winry frustration) but it's something I found jarring the first time I read the series; thankfully it gradually faded out after the series' first third, and we eventually got shown the side of Edward and Winry's relationship that I like the most, the side that I hope the gif above encapsulates: their love for each other and wanting to comfort the other when they're in strife. Winry made Ed's new limbs to help him move again, and even though she didn't understand the full scope of his grief after losing his mother and then Al's body, she still stuck by him and tried to help him. Ed wants to look out for Winry, going so far as to stop her from using the gun against Scar and comfort her afterward, reminding her of what she's capable of - giving life to things. They might not be as openly affection as the above gif, but their love and care for each other is just as apparent.
