Kitschke recs, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L by Panchiko
I'm skipping around here for a few reasons, mainly that I couldn't really get into Liz Phair (sorry if you love her!), Sludgefest is fun and interesting as an art piece that I've already listened to, but I don't have much to say about it other than that, and 69 love songs is such a daunting task that I don't have time for AT THE MOMENT.... So I will reserve it for a later date, when I finally feel like I have the fortitude to spend enough time with that album. That being said, I've already listened to DEATH METAL quite a bit before now!
So, my main understanding of this album is that it was initially speculated to have been dropped as a part of sort of an ARG; something about it being a lost media album from the early 2000's that had been found and posted online, but it seems like they were actually a real band? Seems like the jury is still out on the matter, but I can totally understand why it feels like it would be a faked period piece.
It feels remarkably out of place for being an early 2000s album, very ahead of its time in a lot of places, though there are notes of some of the late 90's grunge and early 2000's production sensibilities, in the song "Stabilisers For Big Boys" for instance, the chorus with the blown out vocals over nothing but a simple drum machine and a almost imperceptible bass synth tremolo underneath feels very much like a Savage Garden track with just a touch of some early 2000s alternative grunge, thinking like, Finger Eleven or something like that.
That being said though, I think a decent comparison, maybe not necessarily tonally, but in similar "difference" to the time period would be Of Montreal, mainly in songs like "Laputa" (one of my personal faves from this album, though every time it starts playing I think its Bear by The Antlers for just a moment); the track is a little slower, has a good mix of physical and digital instrumentation and production, just a little bit strange lyrically... Definitely lump it together mentally with Cherry Peel. I also taste some hints of The Bends/ OK Computer on this album too, particularly in "Sodium Chloride", the outro especially reminding me of the outro to "No Surprises". Also, to go back to an earlier review, there's also some Portishead (or, generally, triphop) vibes in some of the songs that opt to use a drum machine, e.g. "Kicking Cars".
My first go around with this record was probably a year or two ago, I think probably around the time I started dipping out of my punk phase to start listening to some more alternative stuff; and started to dip into the 90's a bit more. It actually took me a while to get around to want to listen to 90's and early 2000's; as I was born in '96, a lot of the music from this time is just completely out of my purview for the most part, until about 2007 or so. And, around that time, when I had become conscious about music, I had remarkably insular tastes, I refused to enjoy anything on the radio. My Ipod had like, Linkin Park, one or two Queen songs, and I think an entire Jim Gaffigan comedy special. This kinda sensibility continued into my middle school years as well; I had gotten really obsessed with Motion City Soundtrack and the British Pop Rock quartet, Mcfly and refused to listen to just about anything else.
I think, even into my early 20's, even as I had really allowed my horizons to broaden, I had really held on to this notion that the early 2000's and 90's were an overall Bad Time for music, and just never bothered to really engage with anything from the era. Of course, that's totally not true! Although I will admit, some of the radio hits from then are still absolutely grating, it will be too soon if I hear a Five For Fighting song ever again.
Anyway, where I was going when I started listening to this album, I actually really didn't like it at all when I started listening to it. The point I was trying to make with how long it took me to listen to this era of music was that I had to start allowing myself to appreciate this particular genre, I was coming out of a different phase that was much faster paced and raw, and so the mellow nature of this album was kind of lost on me.
But now that I've had the chance to let it sit with me... I actually really kind of love this album. I wouldn't put it as a personal All Timer necessarily, I think it's lacking some of my particular sensibilities that really make me obsess over an album or a band, but it absolutely has a certain pull to it that kept me coming back, even after I had decided I didn't like it! Which is certainly a hallmark of a Good Album. And at the very least, it deserves to be placed along side the accolades of many of the other excellent albums from this era.
It seems like the digital/streaming releases of the album released with a few versions of the songs originally uploaded to /mu/ with the significant CD rot, which is a fun inclusion for sure, I'm a big fan of things like this. Brings to mind Brian Eno's quote from his book A Year With Swollen Appendices, "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart." though, I don't think I've ever heard any examples of this kind of degradation. Perhaps something to look forward to once CD's fall even further out of the public consciousness, and right back in when the 30 year cycle loops around again.
Fave Tracks: "Laputa", "The Eyes of Ibad", "Sodium Chloride", "Kicking Cars"
Pretty solid 8/10 for D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L. I really expect this album to grow on me as time goes on. Sorry that this review was mostly just a digression on reminiscing about my experience with music in general and not any especially deep analysis! And I thank you for giving me the chance to really engage with it, as opposed to me just listening to it every now and again when my algorithm decides to show it to me again.

tagged by @charlottan for 6 albums ive been listening to recently ^-^ thanks!!!
1. gangpol und mit - the hopelessly sad story of the hideous end of the world (bitpop / glitch pop)
thanks baxter for making me aware of this one. very very charming and catchy and unique!! love the cute quirky bleeps n bloops and robovocals contrasted with the kinda dark story. very surreal katamari-esque vibe to me. not always in the mood to listen to this one but i've been replaying it a lot lately. (...i wish i could find a copy of this album art that isn't JPEG'd to hell, but regardless.) favorite song: the only sure thing about luck is that it will change
2. radiation 4 - wonderland (mathcore / avant-garde metal)
found this one a bit ago from doing one of the "5 obscure bands" hyhtb posts. not really doing anything that other mathcore bands haven't, but still has found a special place in my heart. i just can't help but love obscure myspace-era bands with little/no high-quality footage. and they dressed in labcoats onstage! - how can you not love that!!!!!!! one of the few Very Loud And Screamy albums that i am somehow always in the mood for despite generally not liking that sound (along with tub ring - zoo hypothesis). favorite song: love through tapeworm hooks
3. humming urban stereo - very very nice! and short cake (lounge)
found through one of tumblr user kitschke's daily reviews. her thoughts ended up being about the same as mine - it's nice lounge with some eccentric sounds/samples. except i'm not as put off about scully doesn't know being on the album 3 times because that's my favorite song on it :p not much to say, i just like it! relaxing favorite song: scully doesn't know (korean version)
4. general patton vs. the x-ecutioners self-titled (experimental hip-hop)
wait, this album isn't called joint special operations task force? shit ive had it tagged wrong this entire time. anyway, i've been revisiting this one lately... not a hiphop buff so im not sure how to describe it but i love the glitchy scratchy parts and loads of sample usage and the little shining parts of Actual Song (we'll paint this town / wake me up in heaven / fire in the hole / etc) to grasp onto before it goes right back to being a mess of samples and glitchiness. basically the spasmodic nature of fantomas except its hiphop. whats not to love favorite song: "we'll paint this town" -- throat and phonograph fire support coordination measures (TPFSCM)
5. portishead - dummy (trip hop)
listened to as part of an album exchange thingy in char's server (thanks eve!). i looove the atmosphere, so much that i dont mind that the album as a whole feels kinda samey to me? its got this kinda dark and gloomy feel to it but its also so dreamy and vibey and... yeah! beats are good vocals are great. just let it wash over u favorite song: sour times
6. high castle teleorkestra - the egg that never opened (avant-prog)
obviously not a recent discovery, but i'm never Not listening to it. in case you somehow have been following me without knowing what this band is, it shares 3 members with estradasphere and is one of the best things ive ever damn heard (EXTREMELY biased). i'll try not to gush about it too much here but its so complex and beautiful and simultaneously retro and innovative and i love the scifi themes and yeah!!!!!!!!! HCT SECOND ALBUM PLEASE I NEED IT. favorite song: the days of blue jeans were gone
whoever wants to do this do it!!!! i have tagged you in spirit. go forth

First part of @kitschke 's recs, Remnants of the Vessel by Faetooth
One of theses days, someone is going to get me to like metal (or doom metal or screamo or any other such related genre) outside of System of a Down, but unfortunately, this is not that one.
I will say that it's very cool that Faetooth is an all girl band, I don't feel like I see a whole lot of that coming from the metal scene. I think tonally, I find this album very interesting, from like a purely production perspective. The really chunky guitar sound is neat, and the way that the drums are so prominent in mostly all the tracks is always really welcome, I feel like drums tend to be neglected in a lot of the music I listen to.
I really like Ari May's vocals when it comes to purely her singing; kind of reminds me of a deeper Alexia Roditis from Destroy Boys. But I have never really been a fan of most types of screamo, particularly the guttural stuff just doesn't click with me. The funny thing is that when screaming is not very prominent in an album or an artists discography, that when it does show up, it very often becomes one of my favorite parts! But I guess it just has to be "earned" for me, in a sense. Can't just be the main focus of the music.
That being said though, not a whole lot of these tracks left enough of an impression on me to really Get In to this album. I really would like to. Metal is like the last "major" music genre that I have yet to get REALLY into. I'm always trying to find "ins" when it comes to genres that I have a hard time listening to (I THOUGHT it would be SOAD but they're so uniquely who they are that it almost doesn't even work) but so far I haven't found anyone who makes me Get It. Although, I've always said that metal as a genre makes sense to me, in that I can totally understand why people are into it, there's very often a lot of really impressive stuff happening musically, so it's just really unfortunate to me that I can't get into it.
Fave tracks are: Echolalia, La Sorcerie
I don't wanna give this one a numbered rating, because I feel like this album isn't for me. It would be totally unfair to rate it low for that reason. Not that my ratings are objective in any sense, I just don't see the point in saying an album is "bad" just because I didn't get it. I think it's probably pretty good. I just didn't like it all that much!

Kitschke recs, Hejira by Joni Mitchell
So, funny story, since I think Joni Mitchell was literally only added to Spotify like, a few weeks ago or something like that, I ended up not listening to this until this very moment (The last two albums and a few of the future ones, I actually listened to a few months ago; I'm only just now getting back into writing these reviews 🙃). I actually must've not noticed this actually though, because I ended up listening to another album by a band called Hejira... Incidentally, I found that album to be quite interesting anyway, so honestly I'm not too upset about that mistake. Maybe I'll take a moment to review that album sometime soon LOL
Anyway, I've always known Joni Mitchell to be a pop darling, and admittedly, the only reason I think I put off listening to her for so long is, one, laziness, and two, I think for like, 4 out of the 5 jobs I've worked in my 9ish years of retail service, "Big Yellow Taxi" in some form or another has been on the store's music playlist, and I am so awfully tired of that song. Far too much of an ear worm to be played so often!!
Anyway, "Coyote" is a fantastic intro track. Joni Mitchell's singing is so velveteen and luscious, whoever produced this record really mic'd her up super well. I really enjoy the pacing on this song too, the delivery on her singing is really evocative to me of some of Paul Simon's faster paced song, while remaining super chill to fit in with the rest of the track. I really love how prominent the bass guitar is on this song too! The guitar is mostly kept rhythm and the drums are also similarly understated, compared to the bass which feels like it is carrying the lead here.
Speaking of being "evocative" I have to imagine Jeff Buckley was a big fan of Joni Mitchell's, "Furry Sings The Blues" sounds like a track Buckley would get on to me. The sort of mix of spoken word mixed with singing, the story telling, the almost Shakespearean delivery... It's really interesting to see where these musical fonts tend to come from!
The titular track, Hejira, is a really cool one. The guitar here really reminds me of some of Pat Methany's work. Apple Music's description of the album describes this album as a travel journal, and I feel like this track really hits that most out of all on the album. It's tonally very grounded, yet foreign enough to feel as though you've found somewhere you'd like to move to, if that makes sense.
Joni's lyricism is really quite something too. Her prose is such that I often forget to even really listen to the music; I get too caught up in just feeling it. People often describe certain artist's voices being an instrument in and of themselves, and although her vocals aren't necessarily technically impressive on this record (though its not as though I'm saying her voice is bad, not by any stretch, just that this album is pretty reserved all around, not a lot of room for any particularly belt-y verses or big runs, stuff like that) her voice fits the vibe of it all so well. It sounds silly to say this album was made for her, like she's literally one of the producers of the album, but like. Idk, it's kinda perfect in that way.
Fave Tracks: Coyote, Furry Sings The Blues, Hejira
Definitely a pretty solid 7/10. I can see why this is listed as one of her quintessential albums pretty much everywhere, and I'm excited to dip into some more of her music when I have the time. I think I have always been more of an 80's music fan, and haven't really dipped into much from the 70's. Likely just because both of my parents were born in the 70's, the music they ended up listening to around me was mostly 80's stuff.
I definitely wanna spend more time with this record too. I feel like this initial first brush review hasn't done it nearly enough justice. But I have other stuff to get to!

How people find you in instagram?
I've don some research to find the best way of announcing my instagram account and what is the good way to ask people to have a look at my instagram page. I think this can be a difficult and crucial part of my presentation. I tried to find the way of announcing my work in instagram but unfortunately I couldn't find a good way, following to my gallery visited I found that when the museums and galleries want people to be attracted to the specific artwork then, they put some sign above or beside the work such as please touch or please take one and this can guide people. I'm thinking to put my cards in unusual place and make people feel free to look and take one of them. I like the idea of having instagram account because it helps me to present my work more and build my business carrier as well. based on Forrester studied 2,500 brand posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and found that Instagram posts had 58 times more engagement per follower than Facebook and 120 times more engagement per follower than Twitter. there are some tips to have active account such as involving people, using hashtags, add important information, share idea and keep up the posting and ect.
