Despite only debuting a mere half a year ago, Japanese singer and actress Kaori Takahashi—mononymously known as KAORI—is already paving her own way in the industry. Her debut album, aptly self-titled, sold over 400,000 copies in Japan alone. Although not the highest selling album in the country, nearly half a million copies for a rookie artist is a testament to Takahashi’s appeal. An even more impressive feat is her appearance on the Billboard 200, as her album debuted within the Top 20, at a surprising No. 18.
Takahashi’s debut single—“Treat Me (Akachan o Atsukatte)”—was an instant hit, something that surprised even her. It wasn’t a No. 1 in her home country (it actually debuted at No. 2), but it still sold nearly 100,000 units and was downloaded nearly 60,000 times within its first week of release. What’s surprising, however, is that the single found itself on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 86. Not everyone—especially an Asian artist and especially a rookie—finds themselves on the Billboard charts, the last to do so was Psy for his viral hit “Gangnam Style” just nine months ago.
Just a few weeks ago, Takahashi’s first headlining tour began in Tokyo. And once again proving how popular she is already, she sold out the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, which holds a staggering 10,000 people. Reportedly, Takahashi managed to do so in a little over two hours. And it could’ve been much faster than that if it weren’t for the traffic caused by countless fans. Apparently, she also sold out Jamsil Arena in three hours, which is practically unheard of for a six month old rookie artist from Japan.
Dubbed “Baby Amuro” in her home country (with the style and 90s/2000s-esque stage costumes to boot), Takahashi is definitely proving to be a potential icon within the Japanese music industry. Her performance at her opening show went viral on Japanese social media and even caught attention in the West, with users comparing her to the likes of Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, and even the “Princess of Pop” herself, Britney Spears. With these comparisons and her ever growing fanbase, Takahashi is clearly set to become the world’s next J-pop icon.

WEIDOL ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES CAST FOR NEW SURVIVAL SHOW " IDOLMAKER: COMET FACTORY; " PILOT PREMIERES NOVEMBER 7TH
After a year of suspense, WEIDOL Entertainment has not only released the name of their new trainee survival show, but also its cast and premiere date. On October 11th, WEIDOL Entertainment announced the name of the show to be IDOLMAKER: COMET FACTORY, and revealed the eighteen trainees who will be competing to debut as a group of seven.
Three years after the commercial success of their first survival show, WEIDOL GIRLS PROJECT, the shocking growth of WEIDOL Entertainment has founder and CEO Kim Chul-sung plotting out the next steps for the company. With the influx of new trainees, each of them eager to debut, the best of the best will have the chance to prove themselves - in every aspect.
" While each of them have incredible talents, " states Kim Chul-sung, " the intention [of COMET FACTORY] is similar to that of WEIDOL GIRLS PROJECT, in that it's meant to test trainees on all aspects of an idol's performance: dance, vocals, rapping, charisma, and more. We don't expect perfection, but we expect the ability to learn. To represent WEIDOL is not to be perfect, but to understand how every piece of the puzzle comes together. "
Many speculate that the biggest change between WEIDOL GIRLS PROJECT and COMET FACTORY will be the judging system - where the former heavily relied on public voting, COMET FACTORY will be using audience votes sparingly, focusing more on judges' critiques and progress reports. While many netizens say that ditching the public vote prevents voting fraud and allows for more meaningful critiques, others claim it could lead to a higher amount of producer bias. Discussions have also turned to the legitimacy of voting during WEIDOL GIRLS PROJECT, which WEIDOL Entertainment has not commented on.
IDOLMAKER: COMET FACTORY is set to premiere on November 7th, 2022, and contestant biographies will be revealed over the coming days. Will you be tuning in?

⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ 🦢 … ONE. BEGINNINGS IN BALLET
Kim Mi-rae was born in Seoul, South Korea to a French father and a Korean mother as the youngest of three children. Her father, Lucas Alexandre Bienvenu, is a renowned pastry chef and former model who hails from a noble family. Her mother, Kim Minyoung, is a semi-retired supermodel and fashion designer who founded the luxury brand MYK in 1994. Mi-rae’s older siblings—Kim Jaehyun (or Christopher Kim) and Kim Narae (or Christina Bienvenu)—also have successful careers, as Jaehyun is a singer-songwriter based in Korea and the United States, while Narae is a supermodel and actress.
Ever since she could remember, ballet has been a huge part of Mi-rae’s life. In 1998, her mother placed both her and her older sister in classes to help develop their strength, discipline, and to help them discover their interests. Narae only remained in ballet for seven years until she went on to begin her career as a model, but Mi-rae stayed. She knew ballet was her true calling, and for the next decade, she would grow to become one of the world’s most prolific ballerinas.
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ 🦢 … TWO. INDUSTRY DARLING + A CAREER IN LIMBO
Starting in 2007, Mi-rae would study at the Bolshoi Academy for a year and a half. During the times when she wasn’t in class or competing, however, she was in front of a camera. In 2008, she was featured in a children’s campaign for her mother’s brand. It was her third modeling job; her first was when she accompanied her mother down the Chanel runway in 1997, and her second was when she was featured in her mother’s “No. 5” campaign in 2001. Once those photos dropped, however, it was a whole new world for Mi-rae. One of Minyoung’s close friends contacted her and asked why Mi-rae wasn’t a model. A few days later, she was sitting in front of another camera for a portfolio shoot, and that summer, she had a contract with Wilhelmina.
In between becoming the youngest soloist at the Korea National Ballet at only 16, Mi-rae would also become a top model, with her career reaching its peak by 2011. By then, she had made her film debut in one of Korea’s top blockbusters, and multimillion dollar contracts with L’Oréal and Kate Spade came with it. She starred in campaigns for top brands such as Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Giambattista Valli, Vivienne Westwood, Anna Sui, Moschino, Miu Miu, Jill Stuart, and Saks Fifth Avenue. She walked runways in Paris and Milan despite her short height, and became renowned for her unique, “doll-like” looks. Unsurprising considering that both her mother and her sister became supermodels, but her most surprising venture would come in 2018.
After rising to the position of principal dancer and becoming a guest principal at both the Bolshoi Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre in 2015, three years later, Mi-rae was inspired by her brother and she made the decision to pursue an idol career in Korea, signing with LOEN Entertainment. The announcement shocked the public, as most thought she would do nothing but ballet even after her cover of IU’s “Boo” went viral in 2016. Mi-rae’s debut was intended to come just months after she signed, but once she got busy with ballet and acting, it was unfortunately but inevitably delayed.
In between 2018 and 2021, Mi-rae made strides as an actress and television host, in addition to her established ballet career. She was nominated for her first major award in 2018, starred in a career defining drama a year later, and was offered her very own talk show by KBS in 2021. However, despite all of that success, there was still no talk of Mi-rae’s debut. In early 2019, rumors spread on online forums that her debut was set for sometime that year. However, said rumors were quickly dispelled by LOEN and Mi-rae herself. That led netizens to ask the question: just when was her debut?
In January 2021, it was announced that Mi-rae had terminated her contract with LOEN (now Kakao). This had fans worried, as that could’ve spelled the end of her idol career before it even started. A month later, however, SM announced that Mi-rae had signed with them instead.
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ 🦢 … THREE. THE DEBUT
Even though fans were expecting an immediate debut, they unfortunately wouldn’t get that. Mi-rae would take to social media explaining that she wanted to train her voice and get used to the industry before debuting, and that such a process would take a while. In the meantime, Mi-rae would of course continue ballet and touch on other aspects of her career, starring in two television shows and a film and also trying her hand at fashion design, designing a capsule collection for her mother’s brand in 2022. As the years dragged on, though, fans grew worried again.
However, in the spring of 2023, something happened. SM announced that Mi-rae was preparing for her debut, and that it would happen sometime in the summer. A day later, she posted footage of herself in one of SM’s studios, and netizens immediately began talking.
In May, Mi-rae was featured on aespa’s “‘Til We Meet Again,” and anticipation for her debut continued to grow. And then, after a month of teasers, Mi-rae’s debut EP—Jewel—was finally released.
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ 🦢 … FOUR. SUPERSTARDOM
Mi-rae’s debut album and its corresponding single instantly became chart-topping hits. She quickly rose to becoming one of Korea’s most beloved soloists, with netizens comparing her to the likes of IU, Bae Suzy, and Im Yoon-ah.
Her surprising vocal talent further endeared her to the public, garnering her nicknames such as Korea’s Doll, SM’s Angel, and Nation’s Little Sister. Even though her career isn’t even a year old yet, many agree that it clearly looks promising. Mi-rae is—in every sense of the word—a star, and her well-rounded skill set, charming personality, and princess-like image is setting her up to be one of the industry’s most iconic idols.

— STYLING
Tumblr media
oh the styling this era was something else !
lots of sheer, flowing fabrics, distressed elements, lace, armbands, lots of dresses, lots of two pieces, and lots (and lots) of couture (mugler, vivienne westwood corsets, dior, ludovic de saint sernin,, treasure chest of a wardrobe mhm)
bc the way hwayoung had ah-reum in archive mugler for one of her stages,, like insane that woman works magic every time !
the styling was very free and almost simple, featuring a lot of matching pieces. it was also very “sirencore” and clearly took inspiration from the ocean and its aesthetics, as well as from classical art ! ah-reum even said that a lot of inspiration came from sandro botticelli’s birth of venus painting, as well as from ancient greek mythology such as nymphs and the nine muses !
shoes were rare to see this era sjwjejjs ah-reum mainly performed barefoot, and if she did wear shoes, they were either lace up heels, over the knee stiletto boots, or doc martens
and omg the hair and makeup ! the makeup this era saw a lot of light shades such as pink, white, lilac, and occasionally black and red, and there were also a lot of pearls & glitter used ! the hairstyles were very loose and wavy, and we got to see ah-reum with a “wetlook” hairstyle a few times !
lots of extensions were used, and a lot of ribbons and pearls were used in her hair ! hwayoung also painted bows on her face once shwusjjsjk
overall, the styling was phenomenal and we got to see ah-reum in an aesthetic she’s never done before !
Tumblr media
— ERA HIGHLIGHTS
after 2 years the it girl is finally back y’all !
the way this album was so anticipated like ah-reum released façade in 2021, broke records, and suddenly vanished (well, not entirely skweijdsj) from the music industry,, and then in the meantime she gets married and has kids like woah !
she did some collabs here n there, but goodness gracious the people were hungry !
so when that pre-release dropped ? oh lord !
“moonshine” came completely out of nowhere, too like,, ah-reum tweeted “something’s in the water” mere hours before the release in august, and all of a sudden there was a new track out
and it was a hit ! garnered over EIGHTY MILLION views in its first 24 hours, topped every major korean music chart, and found itself at no. 1 on the billboard hot 100 !
critics adored it too,, everyone was calling “moonshine” her best track since “façade”
before the album’s release, ah-reum promoted “moonshine” on music shows, was on two variety shows (one in korea, one in japan !), and attended the mtv vmas and she performed !
it was literally ranked as one of the best performances of the night like iktr !!
however, despite the limited amount of promo, the track did win THREE music show awards !
,,and then, the album dropped
this cb was thee cb of 2023,, “darkside” saw over A HUNDRED MILLION views within its first 24 hours, and debuted at no. 1 on the billboard hot 100 (and stayed there for nearly 4 months !), selling nearly 300,000 units. the album also debuted atop the billboard 200 and the billboard world albums charts !
the b-sides “luna” and “allure” fared really well, too ! the former debuted at no. 2 on the hot 100, while “allure” debuted at no. 8
seeing the b-sides on k-charts was so. interesting,, bc at first “luna” was at no. 2, but it was later knocked down to no. 3 and replaced by “allure” wijsjwiwj also yes ah-reum did take up the top 3 spots all on her own !
ah-reum had a lot of creative control when it came to this cb, ofc. she wrote most of the lyrics, produced a couple of tracks, and had a hand in the styling
she was everywhere this era, too. like immediately after having kids she threw herself into work
like do you see how many tracks are on this album ? girlie was working !
in addition to performing on music shows, ah-reum was also a guest mc on m countdown and music bank for about 2 weeks ! she also had american interviews & performances, had variety show appearances (she was a cast member on running man again !), and had a cameo role in a k-drama after ages !
on knowing bros they literally had this woman in a high school uniform at 27 and she’s literally married with 2 kids but she was having the time of her life so !
and she was on with le sserafim, too <33
ah-reum even won 2 grammy awards,, like she won grammys already but still, big deal for a k-artist !
the tiktok challenge collabs at music shows were on beauties’ minds for weeks,, like we hadn’t got one since april of 2021 like those were cherished
speaking of tt challenges, ah-reum’s for “luna” was notoriously kinda hard 😭 its difficulty became a meme and she eventually had to post a literal tutorial sjiwjsjsjk but at the end of the day that was more publicity for the album so !
ah-reum posted a lot on her yt, weverse, and insta this era, as well ! there were a lot of daily updates and behind the scenes,, it was very cute mhm
towards the end of the era, jh posted this “album quiz” to ah-reum’s website, and my goodness msjwjsk
it was essentially a quiz to test the fans’ knowledge on the album’s storyline, but the way most of it was complicated lore wjshisks like beauties on twitter were confused ! it was truly the great bts test of 2022 all over again
ah-reum ended up getting pregnant again at the end of november, but she still performed at melon and mama !
her performances received such rave reviews too,, literally turned both award shows into her own concert like iktr
also girlie literally dyed her hair 3 times this cb
her hair at the start was a deep purple with lilac tips, before jh dyed it completely lilac. and then towards the end of the era, it was literally dyed blonde
getting blonde ah-reum twice this year feels like winning the lottery but please free her scalp !
overall, this era was too good ! like 2 years of inactivity really paid off bc everyone was all over this cb ! so many people called it one of the best cbs of 2023, ah-reum was having the time of her life, and it was just a really great era <3

How the public will views soojin solo in oct?
cards: six of cups rx, king of cups
those who've missed her energy and charisma will be glad to see it again - as she's still as talented and fun to watch as before -, but some others will claim she's wrongfully using her past image and group to promote her new career. even if she does well and puts out some hits (which I'm pretty sure she will, with his KoC), her whole past situation will keep haunting her and hindering her from growing and being properly recognized as a talented soloist.

★ THE BASICS ★
Stage Name: Atlas Birth Name: Moon Haneul Birthplace: Busan, South Korea Nationality: Korean Birthday: April 25th, 2000 Zodiac Sign: Taurus Height: 177.4 cm (5’10″) Weight: 60 kg (132 lbs) Blood Type: B Faceclaim: Kim Sunwoo of The Boyz
+Traits: Creative, compassionate, open minded, driven -Traits: Blunt, confrontational, self destructive, impulsive
★ CAREER ★
Moon Haneul, also known by the stage name ‘Atlas’ - is a South Korean rapper, songwriter & producer. He initially debuted as the main rapper and vocalist of the group Lost Boys, on December 2nd, 2018. But due to multiple controversies and internal conflicts, the group disbanded officially not even a year after their debut. On August 15th, 2020, he made his debut as a soloist with a brand new image and concept as compared to the bright and youthful image that was presented in the group.
★ BACKGROUND ★
Haneul grew up in a household that was full of tension. For years, his parents tried to make things work, if not only for their two children. And his older sister Haewon had always tried her best to shield him from the worries and strain their parents' crumbling relationship put onto their family. His parents divorce when he’s only eight years old. His mother, who had already fallen for another man, gets remarried only a year later.
Haneul and Haewon end up living with their father. The older Haneul gets, the less him and his father seem to agree on things. Their relationship only becomes more and more strained over the years, while his relationship with his mother slowly begins to mend. However, he doesn’t seem to grow any more fond of his stepfather. To him, the man seemed arrogant and that didn’t sit well with him. He was only about as respectful to the man as he had to be.
He had known he wanted to pursue music for a long time. He’d dabbled in things here and there for years and even just listening to music was his safe zone. His father often thought it was a waste of time, and it was yet another thing they often clashed over. Haewon was always his number one supporter and of course the person he was closest to. At sixteen, when he decides he wants to try to become an idol trainee, the reactions were mixed at best.
His father was against it, but knew there was little he could do to change his son’s mind. His mother was wary, but supportive. And naturally his sister believed in him unconditionally, she saw his passion and talent and had always had faith in him. He trained for two years before debuting in Lost Boys and debuted as a soloist a year after their disbandment.

The “Queen of Collabs”—Kaori Takahashi Collaborates with Artists from Psy to Namie Amuro
September 20th, 2013
by E. Cha
With the release of her chart-topping sophomore album Sweet 18, Takahashi is on the top of her game at the moment, and it’s only been 21 months since she first made her debut. The idol’s second album has sold much more than her first, selling over 600,000 copies, and it’s slated to place within the top three of Oricon’s end of the year albums chart, in comparison to the top ten placement Takahashi’s self-title achieved. Her newest single, “Black Night,” became her biggest hit to date, debuting atop the Oricon singles chart and becoming Takahashi’s first No. 1 single. It became the most downloaded song in Japan, and even saw success in America, managing to score a place on the Billboard Hot 100 (her second Hot 100 single so far). And with that level of success, it’s no surprise that other major artists are clamoring to collaborate with her.
The first collaboration to be released was a major one. A remix of Psy’s mega hit “Gangnam Style,” (which hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100) the track was released in June, and its subsequent success cut rather close to that of the original. It garnered two number ones on the Billboard charts, one on the Hot Dance/Electronic chart, and another on the World Digital Song Sales chart. It also debuted at No. 6 on the U.S. Digital Song Sales chart, found itself atop the Oricon charts, and placed at No. 5 on Gaon. Within a mere month, the remix’s music video has also garnered viral status. As of now, it has nearly 90 million views on YouTube, and it’s currently tied with “Black Night” as Takahashi’s most viewed music video. The MV didn’t go viral on the song alone, however. Netizens in South Korea fell in love with Takahashi’s bold makeup, her claw-like nails, and wacky, 2000s-esque hairstyles, with some comparing her to 2NE1’s Dara. There was even a name coined for her style of makeup on Naver, “starliner,” and the trend has gotten so big that it’s spread to England. There was also a scene in the MV of her blowing bubblegum, and since it was the thumbnail, Korean netizens began calling her “Bubble Girl.” Additionally, critics have heaped acclaim on the “Gangnam Style” remix, praising Takahashi for her energetic and unique delivery of her lines, as well as for the versatility in her voice.
The story behind this legendary collaboration is pretty cut and dry, as Takahashi and Psy met at last year’s VMAs. The former’s label, Avex Trax, was quick to push for a collaboration, and due to her status as one of Japan’s fastest rising stars, Psy’s label—YG Entertainment—was just as quick to agree. Takahashi was originally supposed to feature on a remix of “Gentleman,” but she insisted on a remix of “Gangnam Style” instead, as she already had a verse written. And it seems like that change was for the best. An interesting thing, however, is how Takahashi initially believed that there wasn’t going to be a music video for the remix. However, Avex informed her that YG had agreed to one a day before she was set to fly back to Japan. And so, Takahashi remained in Korea for three more days (she was initially there to record her lines), and what is possibly the best music video of 2013 was created.
The second and most recent collaboration to be released was one with South Korea’s very own AKB48 and Flowerbank Entertainment’s most successful girl group, Allume. Released earlier this month, “Cinderella” was also a smash hit, and is probably the most beloved collaboration that Takahashi’s ever done. The gothic concept and traditional J-idol feel of the music video was a favorite among both critics and fans, and Takahashi’s increasingly improving vocal ability saw the most praise, with critics adored how well her voice paired with the members of Allume. And, of course, the track’s commercial performance was just as good. “Cinderella” debuted atop the Oricon chart and found itself at No. 2 on Gaon. It even saw success in the United States, cracking into the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart at a rather high No. 19. With over 6 million views on YouTube, the track has been trending for the past few weeks, and it’s reportedly been playing across Tokyo and Seoul ever since its release.
Takahashi met Flowerbank’s mega girl group at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards, shortly after Marisol and youngest member Analise stated their love for her music. Even though Takahashi and Allume got along well, there was no collaboration planned or even mentioned in passing. However, as Takahashi and Avex were discussing bonus tracks from Sweet 18 to possibly release, she brought up what was originally an unreleased demo, the track formally known as “Chandelier” and what would become “Cinderella.” Since it was a demo, though, the track was unfinished and “empty.” Takahashi, ever the one to take control of her career, suggested Allume as a possible collaboration, as she believed that more than one additional voice would make the song sound fuller. Both Avex and Flowerbank agreed on a collaboration, as Takahashi needed more international exposure, and although Allume was already popular in Japan, more Japanese fans wouldn’t hurt.
Like the “Gangnam Style” remix, behind the scenes of the “Cinderella” MV was posted to Takahashi’s YouTube channel, showing just how much fun she and the Allume girls got along, and there were some truly notable moments between her, Marisol, and Analise. And just a few days ago, Takahashi stated that a live performance of “Cinderella” is in the works, sparking excitement among both fandoms. She also said that she would love for Allume to perform with her during her upcoming tour, and we can only wait and see and hope that it’ll happen.
Even after two major collaborations, Takahashi still isn’t done. Her upcoming single “Telephone” is an exciting one, as she’s set to collaborate with J-pop legend and her biggest inspiration Namie Amuro. The song is reportedly a quintessential 2010s EDM track, topped with the dark concept that was all over Sweet 18. She’s also collaborating with western artists such as Cobra Starship, Ke$ha, David Guetta, The Cataracs, and will.i.am. The first is set to be on the band’s lead single off of their debut album, “You Make Me Feel…” It’s a truly star-studded lineup that shows just how big Takahashi has gotten in the span of just a year and a half, and it’s clear she isn’t slowing down anytime soon. She’s said that she wants to collaborate with as many artists as she can, so we can’t wait to see what she has in store!

🌹 — BACKGROUND !
LEE JANG-MI was born on july 15th, 1997 in busan, south korea to DAVID OKOYE and LEE CHUN JA. the former was a former olympic swimmer and united nations diplomat who hailed from one of the wealthiest families in nigeria. the latter was one of asia’s most well known singers, as well as an actress and a former beauty queen, and she also happened to be a SAMSUNG heiress. shortly after jang-mi was born, she and her parents moved to seoul in order to be closer to her maternal grandparents. the family would spend most of their time there, although they would briefly reside in london, as well.
despite the family’s picture perfect life, tragedy would strike a mere nine months following jang-mi’s birth. in may 1998, they would travel to italy to celebrate chun ja’s 31st birthday, which fell on the 25th. just four days later, however, both of jang-mi’s parents found themselves in a devastating car accident. unfortunately, the accident took both of their lives. chun ja was pronounced dead at the scene, while david fell into a coma, and later succumbed to his injuries a day later. jang-mi and her grandparents were quick to return to korea, and she was left in their care as her parents’ sudden deaths made international news.
up until jang-mi’s first birthday, she was raised by her grandparents and occasionally by her aunt, lee chaewon. however, her grandparents were already retired, and the grief of losing their eldest daughter and son-in-law made it hard for them to properly raise their granddaughter. chun ja’s youngest sister, bae eun-ji, already had a family of her own, and she was unsure if she could split her time amongst three children who were all under the age of five. meanwhile, although chaewon was unmarried, she was almost always working, and she didn’t want to leave jang-mi in the care of a nanny most of the time. and on top of that, her paternal grandparents resided in nigeria. as a result, jang-mi was regrettably put up for adoption. after a few months in a foster home, she was eventually adopted by a couple from southern california. she was given an english name, cecilia, and her middle names were taken from what her parents wanted to name her (chiara), her mother’s own english name (cynthia), and the meaning of her birth name (rose). and although the world knew of jang-mi’s existence, no one would know what became of her for the next seventeen years.
from then on, jang-mi was raised in california along with her older sister, who was also adopted. she grew up with a particular passion for music, and frequently listened to artists such as WHITNEY HOUSTON, MARIAH CAREY, DESTINY’S CHILD, AALIYAH, ASHANTI, AMERIE, ERYKAH BADU, THE SUPREMES, S.E.S, WONDER GIRLS, SNSD, KARA, 2NE1, MISS A, and LEE HYORI. at the age of fifteen, jang-mi began posting song covers and the occasional original song onto youtube. she began working at a nanette lepore boutique a year later, but shortly after she started her job, she was cast off the street by a representative of IMG MODELS, and was encouraged to enter an open casting call. although jang-mi failed to get a job, she managed to work her way into advertisements and editorials.
in 2013, she was encouraged to participate in that year’s MISS TEEN CALIFORNIA pageant. although initially skeptical, jang-mi would end up participating, and surprisingly, she won. the resulting exposure gave her acting and modeling opportunities like never before, and instead of participating in MISS TEEN USA, jang-mi used the attention to get her music career off the ground. she began starring in off-broadway productions, performing on the streets of los angeles, giving out her demo CDs to the people that would stop to watch her, posting her street performances to youtube, and writing as many songs as possible in her free time. meanwhile, her youtube channel was garnering a significant amount of traction. during the summer of 2014, her covers of PARAMORE’s “still into you” and of LEE HI’s “rose” would go viral. the former got her invited to one of the band’s concerts, while the latter caught the attention of YG ENTERTAINMENT. the label invited her to audition, and wanting to get closer to her home country through music, jang-mi accepted.
jang-mi sang ALICIA KEYS’ “no one” at the final round, and to her surprise, she passed auditions. she signed a 2-year contract with YG, and as a result, she had to quit her job, place her modeling career on hold, and move to south korea. she didn’t stop posting to her youtube channel, however, using it to record her progress as a trainee. jang-mi trained alongside the future members of BLACKPINK, and was actually meant to be one of the group’s members, renowned for her powerful vocals. while training, she had background vocals on the songs of other YG artists, wrote songs for them and what would become BLACKPINK’s discography (including the “WHISTLE” demo and “PLAYING WITH FIRE”), and had small roles in a few dramas. jang-mi was particularly hard working during her time as a trainee, and would even spend her days off in dance studios or at karaoke. however, a year into her trainee, she began having doubts, particularly about how she would be received in a country such as south korea. those doubts turned into stress, and it forced jang-mi to leave the company. returning home, she felt as if she had accomplished nothing.
jang-mi’s brief depressive state after leaving YG only pushed her to work harder, however. after returning to california, she didn’t return to her job, and instead focused most of her time on music and getting into university. in september, she was contacted by record label FUELED BY RAMEN, but she declined their contract offer, as it made her feel better to have control over the earliest aspects of her career. jang-mi formed the band ROSES ‘N THORNS with some of her high school friends, began uploading her original work to SOUNDCLOUD, and immediately started working on what would be her debut album.
in mid-october, jang-mi’s debut single “REWIND” would be released, and her album of the same name would drop at the beginning of november. going by the name LIA WILLIAMS, she spent her time touring across california in small venues and performing at local music festivals. in january 2016, however, a representative from INTERSCOPE RECORDS would attend one of jang-mi’s concerts. she was told about a potential record deal with the label, and just days later, she was singing her music in front of executives in INTERSCOPE’s headquarters. and instead of taking a month like she expected, jang-mi was signing a deal within a couple of hours, with JIMMY IOVINE reportedly saying that no one could leave until she was signed. and immediately afterwards, jang-mi got to work on her major label debut album, FRUITS OF MY LABOR, which would go on to catapult her into mainstream success.
fast forward to 2019, and wanting to begin a career as an idol in korea, jang-mi began looking for agencies to sign to. initially, SM ENTERTAINMENT, SOURCE MUSIC, and RBW looked to sign her, but she declined all of their offers. eventually, in june, she signed with YG—the same company that she trained under five years prior. two months later, her debut album was released, and its lead single topped charts across asia. jang-mi is now one of YG’s most successful soloists, and not only is she one of the best selling artists in korea, but she’s one of the highest selling artists in the WORLD, renowned for her performance skills, lyricism, and impressive vocal ability, garnering the title of “PRINCESS OF POP.”
