Excerpt 2 (might drop the numbering later cause I'm still really early into the chapter and IDK how many excerpts I wanna post) from Chapter 6 of Hanguk Hip Hop by Myeong Sun Song:

"While the consumers of Korean hip hop are predominantly female, as demonstrated by the overwhelmingly female audience at hip hop shows, its gatekeepers—those who determine who counts as a “real” or “serious” listener—seemed to be male."

I personally didn't find this [meaning the part about the audience at concerts being overwhelmingly female] to be the case. At concerts (especially at clubs), in Korea, I have always found the predominant audience to be male. At clubs especially, I've noticed that there would 5-10 females to ~30-40 plus males. Concerts outside of clubs were a bit different since the halls were at least slightly bigger than the main club that held concerts BUT the crowd always skewed more male from what I could see. In the US, I've noticed khh concerts are definitely more 50-50 split on gender compared to kpop concerts. The only one that wasn't was DPR. That was more like a kpop concert in the sense that 80-90% were women from what I could see.

I believe that she is correct though even though I didn't personally see it. I HAVE noticed that sometimes when an artist with a lot of female fans performed at clubs, there was some women who would just wait outside until they came out instead of going in. I'm not sure it this was due to age, money, or safety (clubs in SK have gotten a lot of heat for male patrons placing female patrons in harms way. "Clubbing in Korea" storytimes on youtube are aplenty because so many women have scandalous or just outright terrible experiences. I've also heard a lot of horror stories from the clubs when I was in Korea) why they opted to wait outside but I noticed some did. So maybe that's a reason why the ratio was always skewed in males favor when I was out.

I've also met women in real who had horror stories or spoke in whispers about things that male rappers themselves had done to them. Some named names, some gave hints, and some just wouldn't be specific whatsoever (this is the most common one. The khh scene is too small and no one wants the drama). As we saw a few years back with the Won Nation scandal, these men are often NOT nice or respectful to women and saying or doing the wrong thing may very well get you assaulted or some other "punishment".

On the otherhand, if you look at the khh demographics of the online international fandoms, they HEAVILY skew towards female fans. At least from what I can see. I've only met [met meaning interacted with online] a handful of male khiphop fans online during my 7 years of running this blog.

Anyway, this was interesting to me cause I always thought of khh as whole to be mostly male dominated from the fans side and the artist side. On the international side, I just assumed male fans were overwhelmingly ethnically Korean and didn't really participate in international online communities concerning khiphop (the ones who speak Korean can partake in Korean online communities like hiphopplaya or just not participate whatsoever) which is why you don't run into them much online.

Warm lips pressed gently against soft skin, creating a trail of small and loving kisses down Hoongi’s neck. There were no suggestive intentions behind them, just adoration and playfulness.

“[Name]?” Your boyfriend giggled questioningly at your affectionate behaviour. You only hummed in response and continued to kiss his exposed neck, loving how soft his skin felt against your lips and how good his expensive designer cologne smelled.

He giggled again and tried to swat away your wandering hands from travelling further up his shirt.

“Stop,” Hoongi whined. “You know I’m ticklish.”

Every attempt he made to remove your strong grip around him was futile. Though that was no surprise since he wasn’t really trying, and both of you still felt pretty drowsy after napping together on your shared bed.

“Oh, I know babe,” You smirked into his neck, blowing hot air over his most sensitive spots. Hoongi shrieked at that and twitched in your arms, before giggling some more. The familiar and characteristic laughter of his caused you to smile- like it always did.

With a quick movement you suddenly hovered over him, sitting gently on his crotch and trapping his head between your hands. Having moved so quickly without any warning had surprised the rapper beneath you quite a lot- judging by his wide eyes and the embarrassed flush spreading over his adorable cheeks.

“[Name]?”

Cooing inwards at how cute he could make your name sound, you sat back slightly and trailed your hands over his chest in a slow and gentle manner. It seemed as if his mind immediately assumed that you were getting it on because his flush reddened and he bit down on his lip. You just knew he was suppressing a whimper and though the images of Hoongi’s pleasure-filled expression flashed before your eyes, you discarded the tempting idea.

Sending him a sly smile, you brought your wandering hands and nimble fingers underneath his shirt, caressing the soft skin again which caused a breathy gasp of your name to escape Hoongi’s mouth.

Oh, he really thought you were getting down and dirty.

Just a little more, you thought and hid a smirk as your fingers reached their destination.

A surprised yell was the first thing that Hoongi emitted and you were almost thrown off balance due to his sudden jerk. Then bubbles of hysteric giggles and laughter were heard and hands tried to grab at your arms, again with no success.

With fingers almost trapped in Hoongi’s armpits – his last resort to stop you from tickling him – you bent down again and started to blow raspberries on his neck. Another yell escaped your boyfriend and you would’ve smiled triumphantly if you hadn’t been so occupied.

“Ah! [Name]!” Hoongi finally managed to stutter out between his breathy laughs and high pitch giggles, trying to twist his entire body away from you. “I give up, ah – stop, [Name]-,”

Deciding you had tortured your boyfriend enough for the day, you pulled your hands out of the shirt and laid back on the bed beside him again. After a few seconds of silence and Hoongi trying to stable his breathing, he suddenly turned to you; “You’re horrible.” He pouted.

“Awe, I thought you loved me, baby bee.”

“No, prepare for a diss track, [Last Name] [Name].”

You rolled your eyes fondly. Hoongi was quite dramatic and would often argue with ‘how he could make a diss track so savage that he actually would have to call an ambulance’. However, whenever you asked about it in a joking manner he would turn adorably defensive about it- saying he’d changed his mind because he didn’t want to hospitalize his own boyfriend.

“Yeah, yeah, I love you too. Now, let’s continue our nap.” With that, you wrapped your hands around his smaller frame and smiled into his hair when he didn’t reject your touch. After combing through his hair a few times, admiring how soft it was, Hoongi returned your embrace.

No diss track was made that day.
