Thank you for the summary as always! I remember reading an interview where Yoneda-sensei said that Saezuru might not have a happy ending (like an all-around happy ending). I think there was another mangaka there at the interview, and she seemed to be surprised to hear that. I'm sure there'll be a happy ending of sort, but I wonder if there is some losses--like Doumeki having health issues, Yashiro having memory loss (?) from the beating, etc. What d'you think?
I think the only interview I read where Sensei mentioned something about the ending in front of another mangaka, was the talk with Kusama Sakae in the 20072017 fanbook that came out last year. Kusama-sensei said that in her BL works she only writes happy endings. Yoneda-sensei then starts to wonder why she gets so many questions about how Saezuru will end. Kusama-sensei replies something like, because the readers want some kind of reassurance to which Yoneda-sensei replies, “It won’t necessarily be a happy ending”. Of course it’s possible that she really doesn’t plan an all-around happy ending, but I interpreted her statement more as her not wanting to promise one from the start like Kusama-sensei did, because it would kill the tension of the story. After all, she likes to keep things vague in general and loves to challenge her readers. Saezuru with the promise of a happy ending would be like a snake dance with a snake that had its poison fangs removed.
But if she actually plans a bittersweet ending, I guess it could mean that Yashiro won’t be fully healed from his trauma, because if she’s trying to keep things realistic it might well be a life-long struggle for him. Or a side character might die. Or Yashiro and Doumeki might have to live in hiding for the rest of their lives ... the possibilities are endless and there’s no way to narrow them down at this point.
Btw, Sensei also mentioned in the talk above that the storyboard for the last scene of Saezuru that she had in mind from the start is already drawn. She said, that even though she might change it over time, she always needed a finish point to work forward too, because otherwise she’d lose her focus.

Yo.
I’m out, man.
I knew instantly from the synopsis that this was going to be a ride, but I didn’t expect it to be a tragic-feels ride. Gdi I shoulda known that this won’t be playing because I knew that the cover art was familiar. Turns out that Kusama Sakae was also the one who illustrated the cover for Shortcake no Ichigo ni Sawaranaide which hurt me like a bitch too. What a coincidence.
Anyway,
I’m a sadomasochistic piece of shit who takes pleasure in all kinds of painful situations, but I still think that there are many things in life that I don’t deserve happening to me.
And one of them is Hako no Naka / Ori no Soto.
Yo, the hole Life Senjou no Bokura left in my heart last year had finally started healing, but scratch that ‘cause now we’re fucking open again for business!
I’m not going into much detail about the actual plot because it’s longer than volume 1 of Judge Campanilla’s Criminal Law Reviewer. Honestly, I’m still at a loss for words as of this typing. I actually haven’t read the novel prior to listening to the BLCD, so I had a totally different opinion on Douno’s character then than what I have now. Almost all my issues and questions I had while listening to the BLCD were answered by reading the novel.
So we’re going straight to the technicalities now.
A round of applause for Nobe Kenta, please.
Tumblr media
I’m really very much surprised at how well Nobe Kenta pulled Douno off despite this being his debut in the BLCD world. I’m not exactly sure if it was the directors’ wishes or Nobe Kenta’s personal touch because Douno’s personality was marginally much more colder in the BLCD than in the novel. Not only did he manage to stand on equal footing with Kawahara Yoshihisa, he even managed to grab my full attention. He may still be a little rough around the edges (he still has to work on his crying and I’m not sure if he’s “good” at proper mattress mambos because we only had rape here), but I feel like he’s going to have a great future ahead of him. 👌
Y’all know by know just how I love my talented man beast, Kawahara Yoshihisa and if you don’t know, now you do. 😂 Yo, it hurt me like a bitch listening to my man being hurt like that. I kept on imagining that it was Juda who was crying and getting blamed and shit.  😭😭😭 DON’T HURT MY MANS 🔪🔪🔪. He really took to his role well. I think they did well casting Kawahara Yoshihisa for Kitagawa ‘cause I can’t think of anyone else who’s more suited to it than him. Sasuga veteran-sama. 👏
They had pretty decent chemistry with each other, but it’s no Remnant Juujin Omegaverse. 🤷 Still, that’s pretty darn good for working together for the first time and for newbie Nobe. 👏😂
Now this is where the BLCD falls short - the accuracy and truthfulness to the original content. There are so many things that were left out from the original story line. Several important events, dialogue, and even characters were missing. We have two CDs - one for Hako no Naka and another one for Ori no Soto and they have seven tracks each which equals the number of chapters per volume of the novel, so why did they fail to include the most important parts? I mean, the whole thing is three hours long. 🤷 I was so pissed at Douno because it felt like his love for Kitagawa was so rushed and non-genuine and I’m glad that I read the novel afterwards because I got to see just how Douno elaborated on this “love” that he felt for Kitagawa and he utterly proved me wrong on my assumptions. If I read the novel before listening to this, I might have been upset, but since they really didn’t twist the story or anything just cut out some parts, I would still probably like this adaptation.
Umm.
I loved this.
And hate it just the same. The whole experience was like a goddamned roller coaster ride and since I wasn’t satisfied with one ride, I gladly hopped on it again, but this time, there were no seat belts. It took me about a day and a half to recover from the BLCD and another day for the novel. 😩
In conclusion, I say that this was a pretty decent adaptation because even without reading the novel first, it hit me really hard. I do recommend this to those who haven’t read the novel yet, but I encourage you to read the novel afterwards (so that you’ll get the 100% of that 5% Detroit Smash the BLCD offers). If you do read the novel first, do be warned that there are cut outs.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be crying to myself to sleep.
Wake me up when September ends.

Hello! This is off topic (although I'm sure everyone wants to get their mind off the recent cliffhanger) but I was curious about the other stuff Kusama Sakae and Yoneda Kou talked about in their joint interview.
As far as I remember Yoneda-sensei was asked during the planning phase of the fanbook who she would like to have a talk with, and she asked for Kusama Sakae because although she had been a long time fan, they had never had an opportunity to meet before. They talk about how they both became mangaka, and also how they both became fans of each other’s works. Kusama-sensei’s first encounter with Yoneda-sensei was a doujinshi by her that she read at a friend’s house, and Yoneda-sensei has also been a fan of Kusama-sensei’s since her early works. They talk about a series Kusama-sensei used to draw doujinshi for. I don’t think it was a series I know, so I don’t remember the title.
Yoneda-sensei says how she loves the way Kusama-sensei draws men in suits, so they talk about suit fashion and what they like about suits. Kusama-sensei likes to see guys dress more than the undressing part (in manga at least), so she talks about how she wanted Yashiro’s arm to stay limp, so he could always be dressed by Doumeki. Then Yoneda-sensei complains how difficult it was to constantly remember that Yashiro couldn’t move his right arm, and how Doumeki’s little finger tends to randomly grow back, so Kusama-sensei suggests gloves for him.
They also talk about what kind of guys they like. Yoneda-sensei is all “glasses!” when it comes to guys in real life, but this preference doesn’t extend to manga guys. They also talk about male actors in western TV shows, about what “moe” means to them. Yoneda-sensei confesses that she has never watched Titanic because she doesn’t watch romance movies at all. They talk about how guys need to be cute and not cool, and that “cool” isn’t even a compliment, because if you like someone you wouldn’t say “He’s cool” but rather “He’s cute”. And that calling someone “cool” somehow sounds as if you wanted to tease them.
They ask each other about their seme and uke preferences. Yoneda-sensei mentions how she likes semes who would agree to be topped by their uke if he asked for it. She also likes it when the uke has lots of experience while the seme is still a virgin, so the uke totally underestimates the seme but then gets completely worn out by him. Both Senseis are incapable of drawing “super seme” characters.
Yoneda-sensei also talks about how difficult it is to draw characters with special professions like Yoake from Op, because she has to read up a lot of legal stuff for it and even relies on a lawyer to check the chapters for mistakes. They comiserate on how difficult it is to decide on the panel layout for pages. Yoneda-sensei admires that Kusama-sensei has such a unique drawing style whereas she always wonders if her own style will ever be fully developed/complete. She also refuses to draw long haired guys, because drawing long hair is a pain in the ass.
And finally they talk about whether the impression they had of each other before they met matches with their current impression. Kusama-sensei says Yoneda-sensei was just like she had imagined her, and the other way round.
