The Cal Crew Rowing Blanket Project Is Complete. This project was completed by my nephew Jake Marshall and the amazing staff at our courtesy cleaners and alterations. Rowing has one of the oldest traditions in history with ‘shirt betting.’ Shirt-racing, or shirt-betting, embodies this traditional aesthetic in rowing. While suffering a defeat from winning teams in the past rowers traditionally were obliged to strip the racing shirts off their backs and hand them to their opponents on the water. The boats would pull together, shake hands, pass the shirts and push apart, with the losing crew rowing back to the dock shirtless. Today crews pass shirts on the dock or on shore. While rowing for Cal Berkeley from 98’ - 01’ I collected a mass of shirts from teams around the country including University of Washington, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and many others. Honored to have this complete and part of the collection.
