The Cal Crew Rowing Blanket Project Is Complete. This project was completed by my nephew Jake Marshall and the amazing staff at our courtesy cleaners and alterations. Rowing has one of the oldest traditions in history with ‘shirt betting.’ Shirt-racing, or shirt-betting, embodies this traditional aesthetic in rowing. While suffering a defeat from winning teams in the past rowers traditionally were obliged to strip the racing shirts off their backs and hand them to their opponents on the water. The boats would pull together, shake hands, pass the shirts and push apart, with the losing crew rowing back to the dock shirtless. Today crews pass shirts on the dock or on shore. While rowing for Cal Berkeley from 98’ - 01’ I collected a mass of shirts from teams around the country including University of Washington, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and many others. Honored to have this complete and part of the collection. Memories of Cal Crew. Very proud to have started my rowing career with two undefeated seasons at UC Berkeley. We were the first freshman crew to do this in California rowing crew history. Go Bears 🐻 I was coached by legendary coaches Craig Ahmerkhanian (Now Stanford Head Coach) and Steve Gladstone (Now Yale Head Coach). My father, John Nunn was also the USA Olympic men’s rowing coach for the quad sculling team in the 1976 Montreal Games. Day 7: I’m participating in the Rower’s Unite Challenge #rowersunite @roworx_rowing Throwback to 1999 where the Cal Berkeley Varsity And JV Squads beat University Of Washington in Seattle. The entire Cal Berkeley Varsity Rowing Team went on to a undefeated season and I continued rowing into summer at the Henley Royal Regatta losing in the finals in the Men’s Varsity event (The Ladies Plate Challenge) to Cambridge/Queens Tower combined Eight. Nito Simonsen Jake Wetzel Eric Tiret Franco Arieta And Luke Walton and myself made up the core group that would move through the Cal Rowing Program for the next few years and win many more races.
