Visit Kyoto's Past Tour (6–8 hours)
Kyoto is a city steeped in history and tradition, and a visit to this beautiful city will transport you back in time to the ancient and fascinating past of Japan. In this guide, we will suggest some of the best places to visit during your 6-8 hour tour of Kyoto's past.
First on our list is the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of the most famous and oldest temples in Kyoto. This temple dates back to 778 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is perched on a hillside and offers a stunning view of the city. The main hall of the temple is a designated National Treasure of Japan and is a stunning example of traditional Japanese architecture. The temple grounds also feature a waterfall, which is believed to have healing properties, and a wooden stage that juts out over the hillside, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Next, we recommend a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is known for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that line a hiking trail leading to the top of Mount Inari. This shrine is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike and offers a glimpse into traditional Japanese culture. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, and foxes, which are believed to be Inari's messengers, can be seen throughout the shrine. The hike up to the top of the mountain is challenging, but the views from the top are well worth the effort.
Another must-see destination in Kyoto is the Nijo Castle. This castle was built in the 17th century and served as the residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a look into the history of feudal Japan. The castle is surrounded by a moat and features stunning gardens and artwork, including elaborate painted screens. The castle's interior features the famous "nightingale floors," which squeak when walked upon, alerting guards to any potential intruders.
For a glimpse into traditional Japanese culture, we recommend a visit to the Gion District. This district is known for its traditional teahouses and geisha culture. It's a great place to stroll around and take in the atmosphere of old Kyoto. The district is particularly beautiful at night, when the lanterns outside the teahouses are lit up and the geishas and maikos (apprentice geishas) can be seen walking through the streets.
If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, we recommend a visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Located on the outskirts of Kyoto, this grove is a popular tourist spot for its peaceful and serene atmosphere. You can take a walk through the bamboo forest and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The grove is particularly beautiful during the autumn months, when the leaves of the bamboo turn golden.
Finally, we recommend a walk along the Philosopher's Path. This path is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. It's a picturesque walking trail that runs alongside a canal and is lined with cherry trees, making it particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season. The path is named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who used to take walks along the path to clear his mind and think.
In conclusion, a visit to Kyoto's past is a must-do experience for anyone interested in Japanese history and culture. The city offers a wide variety of destinations, from ancient temples and castles to traditional districts and natural beauty. With our guide, you can create a 6-8 hour tour that will give you a glimpse into the rich and fascinating past of Kyoto.

Dimanche
