I got a gift in the mail today! @shinyfire-0 sent me a print of @emptymasks Pegasus. It is beautiful! Thank you both!!
The Pegasus now used in the West End production of Phantom of the Opera was inspired by the pair of bronze Pegasus statues that grace the actual Palais Garnier, La Renommée retenant Pégase by Eugène-Louis Lequesne. This connects the ALW musical to Leroux in a new way, and I am always here for that.

Inspired by a 1988 Vanity Fair photograph of Sarah Brightman beneath the La Renommée retenant Pégase statue on the rooftop of the Garnier. I first saw that photograph on @operafantomet’s blog post found here. I did my best!

I know the Pegasus is controversial right now. But for me, the Pegasus has the potential to become special to Phantom of the Opera fans, both old and new. The statue currently used in the 2021 West End production was clearly inspired by the two actual Pegasus statues that grace the Garnier.
Pegasus, sprung forth from Medusa’s severed neck, is both a thing of beauty and nightmare. Doesn’t that sound like someone else we know?
