What can we say about the relationship between the tadpole and the person who appears in dreams?

[Baldur’s Gate 3, Early Access, Spoilers]

At a first glance, in a careless attempt, we immediately connect the tadpole with the image of the person in our main char’s dreams. One is inclined to think it is the tadpole itself asking for the host to let them in. However, after carefully watching the scene, and checking all its options... I started to doubt it.

During Early Access we only can see four dreams [video compilation of the dreams]:

The first one, in which only the voice is heard for a couple of seconds, shows a weird... tentacle-like creature? It’s not made of the gray skin of a Mind Flayer, it’s red, and unless it’s a terrible bug... it may say that we are in the presence of something different than the usual Mind-Flayer. In fact, I think it looks like a tiefling or a Cambion tail/wings (they have thorns). Could it be Raphael’s since he is red? How do we explain those boots in the top of the screenshot?. Maybe it’s a mere bug.

The second one, in which the main char awakes in that intense green garden, has a peaceful sense to it.

The third one is when that desired person in the dreams shows you an enemy you stab in self defence, and then you observe an entire city under siege.

The forth one is when you have the ability to kill that person in the dreams.

After having the second dream, we can talk about this with our companions. All of them, except by Astarion, explain that their dreams were about desire and power. About a promise. 

It's clear for us that Gale dreamt about Mystra and Wyll about Mizora. Both women are the embodiment of power and desire. We don't have a clue who Shadowheart dreamt about, but we know is a he that represents the same values. Astarion is the one who disrupts the pattern. 

He dreamt about Cazador, which is for sure the representation of power, but of his desire? At first I thought it was a twisted taste forced onto him over two hundred years of slavery. As a slave, maybe he had to learn how to enjoy the worst things just to endure it, so the incredibly wicked and twisted insinuation of Astarion being attracted to his tormentor... was surprising at first. Especially when you explore his dialogue and he shows a strong bad reaction to such insinuation. 

Thinking about it a bit more, I realised that maybe Astarion “desiring” Cazador is another thing he is forced to do against his own will. Or maybe it's the typical consequence of the vampire relationship with the sire: the childe is always attracted to their sire, no matter how much they hate them. Astarion is not even free of having his own desire due to Cazador's power, so... his dream about Cazador was another display of the control that such figure has over him. Therefore, we can say that, in the end, he is also following the pattern, but his desire is commanded by being a vampire spawn. 

When it comes to the main char, we also know that such figure in their dreams is someone they are attracted to [that's exactly what we were asked to do in the character creation part].

The tadpole in the main character's head reacts negatively to this desired person, and it’s strange. It can mean that the projection of that figure and the tadpole are not the same (Gale, are you wrong?). The figure acknowledges the presence of the tadpole and the transformation in process, and they seem to be in power of stopping it if only you let them “in”. But the presence of the tadpole is always there while interacting with this figure, uncomfortable and wanting to get away from that desired person. The tadpole feels threatened by this figure. 

At times, this beautiful figure feels like an entity proper of a demon, asking you to let it in and possess you. We know by Shadowheart’s comment that this voice appeared in her head when she was in the ship, so that we can assume it started to affect the hosts by the same time the tadpole process started.

The hag provided us the most valuable information I found out in the game. She confirmed that the tadpole has been altered, as everyone had suspected. But not only that... they had netherese magic, shadow magic (*) in it. This, however, feels wrong in terms of lore: mind flayers detest arcane magic, they believe its a corrupt version of the psionic power they have. Mixing it with their traditional birth procedure looks odd. Odd if this new experiment is only their idea. Maybe the big mind behind these new tadpoles is not a Mind flayer.

With this bit of information given by the hag, I was inclined to think that this magical compound may explain the presence of the person in the main char's dreams. What surprises me is that the tadpole wants the figure away, so how is it possible that both, the figure and the tadpole, work one against the other? If we assume that the tadpoles were altered to perform a transformation of some sort, shadow magic embodied by that figure and the tadpole should work together. However, the tadpole triggers hunger and animal instincts to rip that figure out. It feels endangered. Maybe it’s because the whole procedure is an experiment yet.

The desired figure keeps claiming they want you to help, but in the process, they also tell you that you can be more powerful and conquer Baldur's Gate [yes, despite the blurriness, it is enough to distinguish the characteristic entrance of the city].

The last dream is one of the most disturbing ones. You awake with symptoms of your skull starting to change its bones, and apparently, the presence of the figure is the only thing which is preventing the transformation. The figure is irritated. You can ask them for help you because the parasite is going too far. The figure says that they need to go deeper into you to calm down the “animal” inside. And once more the tadpole activates a defence mechanism. 

You can indulge yourself in the desire of destroying the figure apart, and you ride the figure strangling them and killing them. The figure calls you “monster” and tells you that you deserve what's coming for you [which I assume, it's the standard Mind Flayer transformation]. The experiment may have failed in this way since you destroy the stasis.

If you resist the impulse of killing them and at the same time resist the intrusion of the figure, the figure is disgusted with you. The figure only is understandable with you when you tell them the truth about your impulse of killing them. They will state that they knew about it, and they trust you to control it while they go deeper into you. 

It’s disconcerting if the sudden hunger for death comes from the tadpole (I put my coins here) or from the figure going deeper into you. I assume it’s the tadpole because the figure will call you monster and wont be happy if you indulge yourself in that hunger. 

By the end, the figure calls you ungrateful if you resisted them once more and tells you that the next time you meet them, you will ask forgiveness. Early access allows that last dream and no more.

Hypothesis

Now, all these strange urges for murdering the figure makes me wonder if the magical compound that now these tadpole have is related to some evil divine entity, playing a role similar to Bhaal in Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. In those previous games, you and a bunch of people were direct spawn of the God of Murder, and in a couple of occasions, you had strong urges to kill losing control of your character [and killing NPCs you were fond of]. What if... this new tadpole is an experiment combining the Mind-Flayer procedure of birth (needed in order to have a completely different body for new demi-god powers) with a divine-infused-magical compound from the shadows. What for?. I don’t know... maybe to create an army of demi-gods? [following the usual flavour of Baldur’s Gate series]. 

This procedure, if it’s as such, could allow to have god-spawn creatures without the God sleeping with mortals and waiting mortal-gestation times. xD If we follow this train of thoughts, and we believe a God is behind all this, it must be some tyrant God, like Bhaal or Bane, since the dreams are all about power and control, showing Baldur’s Gate under siege. Maybe the procedure is not perfect, since there are two different effects working one against the other: The shadow magic that infuses a degree of divinity is about desire and power, but the tadpole’s only interest is to go on with the standard Mind-Flayer procedure. 

I thought about this divinity-compound because we saw that there are third parties interested in this new particular tadpole: Raphael. What Gale says to you after his visit is a fact: if a cambion become interested in these tadpoles, it’s because there is more than souls at stakes. But all of these are specualtions. The only certanties are:

Tadpoles are not only Mind-Flayer-made.

They have been altered with Shadow Magic (weird for Mind Flayers).

The Tadpole and the figure which offers you power are different entities.

The more you use powers of command, the more these dreams come and the more it triggers the Mind-Flayer transformation.

The figure in your dreams is the only one preventing the Mind-Flayer transformation.

Conventional tadpoles only cause Mind-Flayer transformation in a week.

(*) Shadow magic is a Weave-base magic in the Forgotten Realms. It comes from the Shadow Planes connecting to them via the Weave. It's not related to Shadow Weave (an alternate Wave crafted by Shar), something I talked about when explaining some bits of Mystra [here]. You use the standard Mystra-Weave to use shadow magic, but it's not rare that users of shadow magic find some affinity with Shadow Weave. Apparently it's a type of magic strongly related to a human [Tethyrian] ethnic. Churchs of Lolth, Mask, Set, Shar, and Shargaas  show interest in this type of magic.

Even though her staff had arrived ahead of her to clean things up a bit before her personal tour, Mey-Gon was still appalled by the state of the village. Buildings were charred and crumbled, debris strewn everywhere, and weary citizens were sitting alongside the main road in filthy clothes and bloody bandages. It wasn’t the first time she’d witnessed a scene like this, and judging by the long list of applications for aid, it wouldn’t be the last time either.

It had taken a little while to get her charity, the Galactic Initiative for Dedicated Entertainers, up and running; but it had paid off perfectly. According to her manager, her brand was stronger than ever. After her carefully publicized appearance at the first disaster site, the donations had come rolling in, other celebrities had jumped on board, and all old connections to Leia, daughter of Darth Vader, were overlooked. After nearly a year, Mey-Gon had made stops at suffering communities all over the Mid and Outer Rims to get her image taken for the holos before heading back to Haidoral Prime and letting her team do the actual relief work. She had seen towns wiped out by everything from natural disasters to animal attacks to pirate raids; but the most common cause of devastation anymore was the ex-Imperial group called the First Order. According to the briefing packet she had viewed on the hyperspace jump over, this new case on Corvis Minor IV was just another example in the trend. It had been a mining town that found themselves suddenly being robbed and nearly destroyed by the First Order’s forces.

One of the publicists that always toured the sites with her stopped suddenly and handed her a G.I.D.E.-branded canteen of water from his prop bag, “Here, this one.”

Mey-Gon followed his pointing finger to where a woman was sitting on the side of the road with her back against the wall of a blown out building. The woman didn’t even notice the approach of the well-dressed stranger until Mey-Gon had knelt down in front of her and was holding out the canteen; and even then, she didn’t move.

“Hey,” Mey-Gon said softly with an encouraging smile, “You’re safe now.”

She was shocked by the deeply haunted look in the eyes that now rose to meet hers, “They took everything.”

“The First Order?” Mey-Gon guessed.

“Their faceless devils. Their stormtroopers ,” she said the word as if it had tried to strangle her on its way out.

Mey-Gon placed a comforting hand on the woman’s arm. She had seen holos of the new First Order stormtroopers and it had given her chills. Even though she had viewed actual Imperial stormtrooper armor in a museum before and even acted in countless scenes with stunt people in stormtrooper costumes, there was nothing like seeing a true soldier of evil in action. She couldn’t even imagine what it would feel like to be personally terrorized by them.

“But you are safe now,” she said again.

She could hear the hum of the camera drone circling them for a good holo shot, so she tried once more to hand the woman the canteen. This time she took it and cautiously tilted it up for a drink.

Mey-Gon smiled encouragingly, then stood up to continue her walk through the town. She glanced at the publicist’s bag of props and noticed a couple stuffed banthas in case they came across any children, but so far she hadn’t seen any. It was possible there just hadn’t been any in a working town like this, but she had a sick feeling that the real explanation matched one of the more sinister rumors he had heard about First Order attacks.

Her next stop was obvious when she approached the tallest structure in town and saw the man waiting in front of it. He was sitting in a hover chair and his legs were cocooned in a bacta wrap that bore her organization’s logo.

“The mayor,” her publicist whispered.

This man was more lucid than the woman in the street had been, and he held out a hand to Mey-Gon as she approached, “Miss Niek, thank you so much for coming. After what we’ve been through, to see your team show up with all the medicine and construction…” He trailed off sadly.

“The G.I.D.E. is at your service now, sir,” she assured him, “We’ll bring in whatever it takes to rebuild your town and get the people back on their feet again.”

He only managed a hint of a hopeful expression before it cracked and his eyes filled with wavering moisture, “How can we recover from this? We lost so much: the ore, the equipment, the younglings…”

So it was true. Mey-Gon tilted her head back and lifted her eyes to keep her own tears from spilling over. As she blinked away the emotion, she found herself focusing on a shattered window above them and squinted in confusion. Inside the window were the tattered remains of a First Order flag, still pinned at the corners from where it had been displayed.

“What is that?” she whispered.

The mayor didn’t even have to look up to know what she was talking about, and he hung his head in shame, “When they showed up out of nowhere and took over operations, there was nothing we could do-”

“I thought it was a sudden attack,” she frowned.

He shook his head, eyes glazing over, “They occupied the town for weeks, transporting away all our ore and giving speeches about a galaxy ruled by order and justice. We thought that maybe if we cooperated, showed that we supported their vision...maybe they would spare us as an ally.” He clenched his jaw, “But in the end, they still took everything we had and razed the whole town.”

“I don’t understand,” Mey-Gon furrowed her brow in frustration, “If this was going on for weeks, why didn’t you call for help from the New Republic Defense Fleet?”

“We did,” he said immediately, then his lip twisted up into a sarcastic smile, “They denied our request, said the First Order was a minor local issue.”

For a moment, she was appalled, but then she realized that this response wasn’t a surprise at all. She didn’t follow politics very closely, but the one thing she did know was that the First Order was a bigger threat than the New Republic was willing to admit. She had seen evidence of that with her own eyes. She also knew this was the very reason that Leia had gone rogue to form her own military group.

Leaning in closer to the mayor, she lowered her voice, “Why didn’t you contact the Resistance?”

He recoiled in shock, yet managed to keep his voice to a harsh whisper as well, “The Resistance? But they’re extremists!”

Mey-Gon pressed her lips together to prevent her from arguing further and stood up straight again, transforming her expression back to the sympathetic one that looked good in the holos, “Well, whether your people choose to rebuild or relocate, the G.I.D.E. is here to help. My staff will be by to discuss everything with you soon.”

The rest of her visit did very little to assuage her heartbreak and frustration, and she found herself still bothered as she sunk into the soft nerf leather seat at the helm of her personal light corvette. The glow of hyperspace shifted and danced as it warped itself around her wide transparisteel viewport, and she couldn’t help but think about all the worlds and souls which that light represented.

Were there really so many beings willing to just roll over and embrace their own subjugation by tyrants? But that was already proven. History had shown how pliable the galaxy had become whenever power changed hands, which it had multiple times over the course of just the past century alone. If the First Order ever did grow bold enough to rise up and overthrow the New Republic, most of the galaxy would probably just accept it. There were so few beings like Leia, who were willing to fight back. Mey-Gon realized sadly that she was no fighter either; but she would continue to resist the First Order in her own way, even if that just meant cleaning up after them, one devastated town at a time.

Intro Analysis

So I had many, many thoughts about our lovely new intro. 😅

Intro Structure and Order

The order of the new intro is something I find fascinating. While I've kinda paid attention to intros of other shows, the order of them have often made a lot of sense and were typically all pretty similar in how they ordered their crediting to their actors and whatnot. However, the Mighty Nein intro is different even from the intro of Campaign 2. The only thing that stayed the same was that Travis and Marisha were first and second to be credited, respectively, while Matt was very last.

In the new intro, Nott/Sam is third, (while he was 5th in the other one), and Jester/Laura is fourth (while she was 7th previously). Travis, Marisha, Sam, and Laura (and their chars) are all introduced in the first 30 seconds. Then it cuts to their ‘beginning’ as a group after the Trostenwald meet-up when they get a cart and head north to Allfield together.

At :37 seconds and :40 seconds respectively, Liam and Ashley are credited, spliced with scenes (presumably from both of their character's pasts, if they were keeping consistent with the Jester past scene and the Caleb past scene shown). We then cut to other miscellaneous scenes of the group and animations of their fighting abilities (which are gorgeous). At 1:10, Taliesin is credited with a Caduceus shot (shoutout to the purple Mollymauk butterfly symbolism shown here and at the beginning group shot) for obvious reasons. And then, lastly, we get our darling Matt Mercer, same as the previous intro.

Now, we can analyze this order through a couple methods.

Chronologically:

1. 

Fjord's ship exploding that happened a few weeks before their session zero. His inciting incident to track down Jester (as Travis mentioned) because he'd seen her do magic and thought she might have answers or a way to get answers.

2. 

Beau facing the monks also could have happened a couple weeks before their session zero. (Maybe her inciting incident for leaving and heading out of Zadash)

3. 

Nott fleeing guards (could have happened the night before the start of EP 1), as Nott mentioned trying to steal stuff and almost getting caught when we're first introduced to her.

4. 

While we get a scene of past Jester, we also get their ‘starting out’ scene with her and the group in the cart leaving Trostenwald to head north towards Zadash and eventually the Soltryce Academy, as per the original plan of Fjord and Jester.

5. 

We then get a scene of Caleb being traumatized by fire, that could reference ep 7, and then ep 18 where he explained his trauma (the past scene here and his fellow students).

6. 

We cut to Yasha in a battlefield next which could also reference ep 16/17 where she explained a little about how she'd previously ‘gone to battle’ when asked if she'd killed any of her fellow peers (playmates) and her questions about the battles happening in Xhorhas in that Zadash arc of Harvest Close and the Victory Pit. We also see her current pursuit of the Storm Lord's mission as she's referenced many times.

7.

Taliesin is a bit of an outlier in the order and for obvious chronological reasons, so that doesn't need much analyzing.

Narrative Impact:

1.

Fjord and Beau have obvious and not so obvious inciting incidents to their individual journeys that are part of the reasoning behind the formation of the Mighty Nein. They're a big duo in the decision-making of where and what the Nein are doing. It makes sense for them to be at the beginning.

2.

Nott's inciting incident is inextricably linked to Caleb. However, her past can come back to bite her in the ass at any time, and she is always, always aware of that. That's symbolized here with her fleeing this guard and her general narrative impact on the formation of the Mighty Nein. Caleb continually checked in with her about why they should stick with ‘these weirdos’ and in the beginning she always said they should, because it was safer for the both of them. And later she mentioned that it was really nice to be around people that weren't mean to her and physically abusive towards her. ('it's nice having conversations instead of people throwing rocks at me'-ep13)

3.

Jester being fourth also makes sense. If Fjord and Beau are logical decision-makers, Nott and Jester are also a duo for the heart of the Nein. Caleb will do what Nott wants. He cares a great deal for Nott, and tends to follow her lead (especially in the beginning episodes). Nott and Jester were immediately friends, which made Caleb friendlier towards Jester. Nott and Jester wanted to stick together, and they, in ep2, became ‘Detectives!!’ together. Fjord and Beau wanted to do what Jester wanted. Yasha and Molly as well, were pretty charmed by Jester. And with the dissolution of the Circus, Molly was happy to tag along because he felt Jester, and Beau sort of, were fun to be around.

Additionally, what always struck me about both Nott and Jester, was that they truly felt like they were on a journey of self-discovery. Other similarities include: both of them are often underestimated by others, they're unpredictable, they like discussing romance with each other or Beau, and like playing tricks on people together. They both had a purpose (Jester to find her dad, Nott to be safe and be stronger together), but these two characters really seem to be searching for something, for some part of an identity they haven't yet found or decided on. It feels very 'YA fantasy heroine' as I think a few others have said. Jester's scenes/intro, really highlight both that aspect, and her impact on others within the narrative.

4.

Caleb n Yasha being highlighted after a couple group shots, (Liam and Ashley being credited one after the other) is fascinating to me. It really made me sit up and go ????. But then narratively, it makes a certain amount of sense. Caleb's past has been the defining aspect of his characterization, and his effect on the others. I've thought for some time now that Yasha's characterization may have defined her in a similar sort of way. Caleb and Yasha have had a strange sort of kinship, as both Ashley and Liam have mentioned. They're both awkward sure, but I'm leaning more heavily into the theory, because of the subtext around Yasha, that they might also have very similar pasts. 

The violence, the manipulation, the isolation of Caleb, could also be in aspects of Yasha's past when you consider some of the things Yasha's said. Additionally, it feels like both of them are seeking redemption, though for what in Yasha's case, I wouldn't know. But undeniably, both of their character arcs are going to have a gravitas-a narrative weight, on the setting of the Dwendalian Empire/Xhorhas that perhaps the others of the Nein wouldn't. Both of them will most likely have an impact specifically within the confines of the Empire/Xhorhas conflict.

5.

Again, Mollymauk's coat, and then Caduceus being shown with Taliesin's credits, doesn't need much analyzation. The impact of both characters has been made obvious enough. And boy do I adore Caduceus’ lil purple butterfly.

Analysis of Timing/Structure

This part is more the light-hearted, subjective analysis of the timing/structure of the intro. There's a few things I just was delighted by because the timing of them just suggested certain things. First off, my hat goes off to the timing of the animation between :49 and 1:05. In order in this sequence, we see Caleb, Fjord, Nott, Jester, Caduceus, Beau, Yasha. Guess what that suggests for combat??? Ranged(Caleb, Fjord, Nott)->Mid-range/Melee(Jester, Caduceus)->Melee/Close combat(Beau,Yasha). That's just…awesome. I love how they structured that.

Another good sequence to analyze is from 1:15 to 1:20. In order, we see shots of Fjord and Jester, of Nott-Caduceus-Beau, and of Yasha and Caleb. With the Fjord and Jester shot, the lyrics of ‘Can you answer the call’ are overlaid, implying the trope ‘Call to Adventure’. If Fjord had never searched out Jester because of his inciting incident, he wouldn't have been Jester's ‘herald’, ie: her call to action, for her to go north instead of staying along the coast to search for her dad. If she had never met Beau by not journeying with Fjord north and them all meeting in Trostenwald, they never would have been led to the Gentleman, to the answering of Jester's own quest to find her father.

Another fascinating lyric is ‘Diggin deep in your soul’ heard over the shot of Nott-Caduceus-Beau. All of three of these characters have been set up by events in the narrative, to question their purpose, to do some soul-searching. For Nott, this is first done by Caleb, ('why should we stick with these weirdos?' - ep2) and is also done in Ep19 when the Nein questions her self-hate, and done again in ep 27 when she affirms that she loves the Nein, and that's why she's sticking around. Molly left his mark on Nott, and she has since his death, wanted to make sure that they all stick together, because she believes that they can do amazing things together, and that all of them are a little bit better as a group than what they could be on their own by themselves.

Caduceus’ whole thing is try to find or discover what his Goddess wants of him, of what he can do to save his home. Self-reflection and soul-searching come hand in hand with that kind of story. Mollymauk wasn't like that at all, he just lived life, but that Caduceus is almost the exact opposite kind of character, has an implicit connection to those lyrics. Beau is arguably, the one most affected by Molly's death. Previously, she'd been ordered to search out corruption and question everything, but Molly dying also made her question herself and her purpose. That sort of change is almost electric it's so exciting an effect. By her own self-reflection and soul searching in the episodes since, Beauregard has really come into her own and quickly become one of my favorite characters of anything I'm currently watching. If she continues in her path, she'll easily become the driving force, or the leader, of the Mighty Nein.

The following lyrics ‘As the legend unfolds’ over Yasha and Caleb made me squeal a little I was so excited. Of all of the Nein, the characters of Caleb and Yasha feel like they have the most narrative gravitas, the heaviest weight of impact. It would surprise me not at all if Caleb and Yasha are spoken of as legends from where they come from. If Caleb redeems himself, maybe those in Blumenthal will consider him a hero. If Yasha saves her people, maybe wherever she comes from in Xhorhas with consider her a legendary folk hero. We just can't quite get a handle on their mysterious pasts or what their ultimate goals are. Both of them are toeing a pretty fine line in my head, that makes me really want them to be heroes by the end of this campaign. All of the Mighty Nein should be, that would be amazing, but Yasha and Caleb in particular, have the potential for renown in their home villages, so to speak.

Symbolism/Details 

There's a ton of both symbolism and little nods to the show in the little details all throughout this intro, so this is just my special shoutouts: 

The doodles throughout Jester's room and her unicorn bedsheets.

The purple butterfly that symbolizes Mollymauk that's with Caduceus in a couple scenes. 

The Nott wiggling her flask in their cart that's so reminiscent of Sam. 

The fact that the Caleb in the cart next to Beau says 'fire' as he's watching through Frumpkin's eyes reminds me of them finding Allfield under attack and then it automatically switches scenes to Caleb's trauma/past. 

Yasha slicing off heads of the Hydra (that fight stressed me THE FUCK out yo and thank all the PTB for Yasha). 

The raven on the coat. 

The guest stars being highlighted from Matt's book is just 👌👌👌. 

I made out details of Lorenzo and the phase spider from the sewers in the little showcasing of the villains in the last shot and thought that was pretty cool. 

Did I watch this at half speed at least ten times??? Absolutely I did. And now I'm off to do it again!
