Having some fun on the library of babel, I realized that every time you want a copy of whatever page you're on bookmarked, the site generates a new & unique url- one that you get to name. The fun part is, the bits before the unique name are all standardized, meaning once you have a unique copy of a page you can change the end of the url to whatever other random word you want, and it's likely you'll find some other random page that someone else wanted to save at some point in time or another! It's funny seeing what stuff people wanted to bookmark amidst a sea of infinite random text, for example the bookmark "good" returns a page with three lines from an old ipad pro advertisement

I was curious what people would choose to bookmark as "pyramids", and I was pleasantly surprised to see someone had copied into the search tab the entirety of Frank Ocean's "Pyramids"

And sometimes people just bookmarked what looks like random text, like what's here for the bookmark "fuck"

Try it yourself!! I really enjoy finding passages I know other people have read/created, it feels like I'm seeing someone's footprints in the library from who knows how long ago.

2017: The Safest Year in Aviation History

ZERO. Of the more than two billion people who flew last year worldwide, that’s the number who were killed in commercial airline accidents. Nobody. Thus 2017 becomes the safest year in the history of civil aviation.  

It was 2013 that held that honor previously, but the fact is that flying has become so safe that year-over-year comparisons are increasingly academic. Instead of playing the same game every January, it’s better to look from a wider, more macro perspective. What we see is a trend that began about thirty years ago, and has since reached the point where air safety, as we know it, and what we now expect of it, has been radically transformed.

It’s a little like global warming: the entire paradigm has shifted, with every year squeaking just ahead of the previous one as the new record-breaker. Disasters still occur from time to time (see Malaysia Airlines), and there are ups and downs of statistical correction. But the safety bar, so to speak, is in a totally different place.

There are so many intriguing ways to quantify this. And while this is a global story that airlines the world over can be proud of, here are four statistics that Americans, in particular, can savor:

1. The last fatal airliner accident on U.S. soil was the Asiana Airlines crash landing in San Francisco in 2013. Three teenage girls were killed in that incident, one of whom was struck by a rescue vehicle.

2. The last fatal accident involving a U.S. carrier of any kind was the Colgan Air (Continental Connection) tragedy outside Buffalo, in 2009, in which fifty people were killed.

3. The last fatality involving a U.S. major carrier was a Southwest Airlines mishap in Chicago in 2005, in which a 737 slid from a snowy runway and collided with a car, killing a young boy.

4. And perhaps the most remarkable stat of them all is this one: the last fatal accident involving one of the “big three” U.S. majors — that’s American, United, and Delta — was, — wait for it now — the crash of American flight 587 in November, 2001. That’s right, sixteen years ago. Not all that long ago, the idea that our biggest airlines, each of which records thousands of departures every day of the week, could, combined, go the better part of two decades without a single crash, would have been unthinkable. This is arguably the most impressive accomplishment in American aviation history.

It wasn’t always like this.

In decades past, one or two crashes every year involving one or more of the mainline U.S. carriers was considered normal, even expected. And in other regions of the globe the numbers could be staggering.

Consider for a moment the year 1985. During that one year, 27 major crashes around the world resulted in the deaths of almost 2,400 people! These included the Air-India bombing over the North Atlantic, with 329 casualties, and, two months later, the crash of Japan Airlines flight 123 outside Tokyo, with 520 dead. These, the second and fifth-most deadly accidents in aviation history, happened 49 days apart! Also in ’85 were the Arrow Air disaster in Newfoundland that killed 240 U.S. servicemen, the infamous British Airtours 737 fire, and the crash of an L-1011 in Dallas that killed 137.

And we’re still not finished. 1985 was also the year of the TWA flight 847 hijacking.

Sure, that was an unusually bad twelve months, but it wasn’t entirely out of synch with how things used to be.

When I was in sixth grade, I started keeping newspaper clippings of plane crashes. Whenever there was an accident, anywhere in the world, I would snip the related articles from the paper and put them into a shirt box. By the end of junior high, that box was jammed full. Six, nine, ten, even a dozen catastrophes every year had been the norm.

The big question is, how did we get here?  

No, it has nothing to do with Donald Trump, who this week shocked absolutely nobody by taking credit for the good news in a typically preposterous Twitter message. “Since taking office I have been very strict on commercial aviation,” Trump tweeted. Whatever measures he’s referring to, of course, exist only in his imagination, and are better left unexplored.

There are three very real things, on the other hand, we can thank for this reality, all of which precede Trump’s presidency:

The first is better crew training: the advent of crew resource management (CRM), for example, and substantial enhancements to cockpit culture, hierarchy and oversight.

Almost as critical has been a raft of improved aircraft technologies: things like TCAS, enhanced GPWS, windshear detection, cargo fire suppression, and so on.

And thirdly — and naive as this will sound to some — we’ve had the collaborative efforts between air carriers, regulators, and organizations like ICAO, ALPA, and other advocacy groups. The specifics here are varied and expansive, from the standardization of runway markings and air traffic control protocols to substance abuse programs. These people and organizations, often with very conflicting missions and priorities, have, for the most part figured out a way to work together.

And, okay, we’ve been lucky, too. I’ve been knocking on wood since the first paragraph. And a dearth of headline tragedies does not mean we should rest on our laurels. Complacency is about the worst response we could have. Air safety is all about being proactive — even a little cynical. We need to keep this going.  

A quarter century ago, as air travel was beginning to grow rapidly, and the world’s airfleet was expected to double or even triple (it since has, and may do so again in our lifetimes), experts warned of a tipping point. Unless certain deficiencies were addressed, we were told, disasters would become epidemic. Some of the scarier analyses were predicting a major crash occurring every week by the early 2000s. Fortunately they were addressed, and the end result is that we’ve effectively engineered away what used to be the most common causes of crashes.

Indeed the global-ness of this trend has been maybe its most notable aspect. It’s one thing that planes aren’t crashing in the U.S. or Europe, but they’re not crashing anywhere, really. Not in India or China, where aviation has been growing exponentially and where the highest levels of concern were. Not in Asia, not in Africa, not in South America.  Are all these regions equally safe? Of course not. But they’re all safe.  

It’s a little ironic, too, for a couple of reasons:

For one, surfing the Web or clicking on the television, you almost wouldn’t know that any of this has happened.  On the contrary, the media’s habit — and by media I’m referring to both commercial and social media — of over-hyping and over-dramatizing even the most minor malfunction or precautionary landing, has convinced many people that accidents are in fact happening more frequently, and that flying has become more dangerous, when exactly the opposite is true.

And then we have people’s attitudes toward flying in general. It’s hard to overestimate the levels of hate and contempt people have for the airlines, and while a lot of that sentiment is well-earned, let’s take a minute to acknowledge the enormous strides they’ve made when comes to what is arguably the most important metric of them all.  

Say what you want about flying; there’s no denying that it’s become vastly safer. And this new normal is something we can all, well, live with.

She was the only one he had eyes for the whole night and he didn’t really know why. Of course, she always looked beautiful but there was something different about her tonight. She didn’t look like her usual self, there was something going on and it pained him not to know what it was.

He had known her long enough to know what was going on with her by only looking her in the eye. He knew how her eyes would glisten when she was working on one of her latest projects or she just had a good day. The way her eyes would start to hang when she had stayed at the office for way too long and drank way too much coffee.

It was little over five years since he had come down to her cubicle in the IT department of QC, asking her if she was able to salvage something from his laptop. And since then she had become one of his closest and only female friends, something especially his mother was very pleased about. Because what parent didn’t like Felicity Smoak.

“Felicity Smoak? Hi. I’m Oliver Queen.”

“Of course. I know who you are, you’re Mr. Queen.” The blond said after turning away from her screen to face him. He had to say that he hadn’t expected to find a young woman after Walter had given him her name and told him about how smart she was.

She had to be younger than him, she wore a pink blouse, black pencil skirt, hair in a low ponytail and bright pink lips. And her big, bright blue eyes hide behind her black rimmed glasses.

“No Mr. Queen was my father.”

“Right. But he’s dead. I mean, he drowned. And you didn’t, which means you could come down to the IT department and listen to me babble. Which will end. In three, two, one.”

“I’m having some trouble with my computer and they told me that you were the person to come and see. I was at my coffee shop surfing the web and I spilled a latte on it.” He said after holding back the smile that was forming on his lips and handing her his laptop.

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Because if I’m seeing this correct. Your screen is busted.” She said while looking at the laptop one more time.

“My coffee shop is in a bad neighborhood.” He had said in his most convincing tone.

“Really, because I’m not buying what you just told me.” She said after being silent for a second and looking up at him with her head tilted just the slights bit.

“Okay, you got me. It didn’t do what I wanted it to do and I got frustrated.”

“So you just thought ���why not throw my laptop across the room, that’ll help’” She said with her hand on her hand.

There was just something about her that made him smile for the fist time he had been back from the island but at the time he wasn’t ready to admit that just yet.

Oliver never really liked the social outings but it came with the job of mayor. It all had been fun and games when he was CEO of QC, his family owned that company, he then he didn’t care what people thought of him. But he didn’t want to be CEO, he didn’t to take over the family company and after QC got taken over by Palmer Tech.

He didn’t like Ray Palmer that much but he made sure to talk up his favorite IT-girl to the guy hoping he would be able to save her job. The last thing he had accounted for was her going out with the billionaire asshole. And the look she had on her face now was the same look he had seen her wear when he had come into her office of the day of the big fight between her and Ry that ended their relationship.

Her blue eyes hanging low, more than the usual few loose hairs coming out of her tight pony tale. She was trying to hold up her smile in front of everyone around her, trying to keep up appearances for her own sake being.

“Well, it was lovely getting the chance to talk to you tonight.”

“Likewise Captain Lance, I’ll hope to continue our conversation some other time.”

“Keep up the good work Queen.” Captain Lance said as he gave Oliver a pat on the shoulder before he walked off and Oliver caught him mumbling something along the lines of ‘another thing I never thought I wold say’ It where the little comments Lance made that made him crack a small smile when he stopped by city hall.

It almost seemed like she was sucked back into her own little world as soon as she had stopped talking to Walter about whatever. He had seen her do this multiple times through the years at events like this. She would only talk to the necessary people at these things and as soon as she could leave she would.

He presumed it had to do with the sudden weight on her shoulder of running a multi-million dollar company and the grieve of her ex-boyfriend who is presumed dead. This all lead to her putting everything she had in her work

Since then they had gotten even closer. He had talked her through the first weeks being a CEO, she had encouraged him to run for mayor instead of running a nightclub for the rest of his life. She had supported him the whole way through, they went through thick and thin together in the last five years. From Laurel dying in a car accident after being hit by a drunk driver, to Felicity finding out that her ‘dead’ ex-boyfriend Cooper Sheldon wasn’t so dead after all.

But after her mother had come to town a month ago and left a week later right before Felicity went back to put her all into her work once again. It had to be something Donna had said and just like Felicity, she talked a lot when she was on a roll. But the thing was, he didn’t know what and that was the thing that was bugging him. He almost lost her once and he was willing to do whatever was necessary to keep her close.

“Fel-ici-ty” He found her a half hour later at the exit putting on her coat and trying to get out as soon as she could.

“Oh, hey Oliver. I got to go, got a call from the office. Something happened and they need me.” She said in a hurry trying to shake him off. With the distance between the two of them, she already at the door and he still at the top of the stairs.

“Felicity, I know your lying and I know that there is something bothering you. Please, Felicity. Tell me what’s going on.” He said picking up his pace trying to make his way down to get to her before she was able to walk out that door and out of City Hall without talking to him.

“Oliver I swear, there is nothing going on. I need to go.” She said right after he had put his hand on her shoulder and trying to get out of his reach and out of the door.

“Felicity stop! Just, stop, just for a moment.” He said, well more yelled, as soon as she was out the door and continued running down the steps of City Hall. It was pouring rain outside but it wasn’t going to stop Oliver from running after her and yelling, “Just tell me!”

“How do you know that something was bothering me?” She spoke up after she made herself look up at him, into his eyes, once he was standing next to her.

“You do that crinkly thing with your eyebrow, you do it every time something is bothering you. And on top of all of that, you Miss Smoak, you are a terrible liar.” He said just before pulling her into a hug and planted a kiss on the crown of her head.

Why Daytona Became The Worlds Most Famous Beach

Daytona Beach is known for many things. It's the home of The Daytona 500, which starts the NASCAR'S season every year in February, considered the "Super Bowl" of racing. Many people think of Daytona Beach and Spring Break. The city welcomed college students back in the 60's, 70's, & 80's. They stopped advertising to campus' back in the early 90's. But we still get our share of these visitors every spring. Still others associate Bike Week & Daytona. Our March Bike Week is one of the largest and oldest motorcycle rallies in the country and just celebrated its 78th year!

Being a resident of Daytona Beach since 1975 I've seen a lot of changes on what is known as "The World’s Most Famous Beach".Today we are a beach front community, with retirees and families living here. Over 10 million folks visited our shores last year. They come for the events, our hard-packed sand, wide beach, and temperate climate.

So how did we get that nick name “The World’s Most Famous Beach"? It all starts back in the early 1900's. At the turn of the 20th Century when the "Horseless Carriage" became a plaything for the wealthy. But, driving, in a world meant for horses, wasn't easy. Hard smooth surfaced roadways didn't exist. Without that drivers couldn't really test the speed of their new self-powered machines.

Some records show beach racing started in 1902, but the first official timed race was in 1903. That was between Ransom Olds’ “Pirate” and Alexander Winton’s “Bullet”. On March 26,1903 they did their first timed race using a measured mile. The "Bullet" beat the "Pirate" by .2 seconds setting an American land speed record of 68.198 miles per hour.

FYI Old’s started the Oldsmobile car company, his driver, H.T. Thomas, became the supervising engineer. Alexander Winton is credited by many as the founder of the American Automobile Industry. He sold the first production gas powered car to a private individual in March of 1898. History shows we were in the presence of “Automobile Greatness”.

The race was held event during a week-long "Winter Carnival" organized by Henry Flagler's Ormond Hotel. This was the beginning of what came to be known as Speed Weeks. Flagler built the Ormond Hotel and connected it by a railroad spur to his Florida East Coast Railroad. Flagler was one of the earliest hotel developers and tourism promoters of Florida. His clientèle were the wealthy East Coast Elite escaping the cold winters. Many came in for the “season” which ran from December to April. One, John D. Rockefeller, even built his winter home across from the Ormond Hotel. That’s the original John D, the wealthiest man in the world at that time!

Imagine March 1903 and the who’s who of wealthy playboys arrive to test out their machines on Daytona’s hard packed smooth sandy beach. The time of the event depended on the tide, the “course” width was also tide determined and could be 500 feet wide at low tide. The challenge is we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day with the time moving about 45 minutes each day. Schedules had to be flexible.  

It’s interesting to note these early racers were not only gasoline powered, but steam and electric power were also used. Remember there were no gas stations at this time. Steam powered cars were even outselling gasoline powered, they could use the horse's water troughs for the water they needed and those were easily available, kind of like gas stations today.  

William K. Vanderbilt started 1904 racing with his run on January 27 and set the first recorded world land speed record over Daytona’s measured mile. His Mercedes made the run at 92.30 mph. That’s Vanderbilt, of the shipping and railroading family that created Vanderbilt University, many New Port Mansions, and built The Biltmore in North Carolina!

The 1904 the speed racing expanded and included motorcycles. Glenn Curtis setting a 67.36 mph record on his 2-cylinder bike. That record held for 7 years. The auto record was broken 3 times, in a 30-minute span! Vanderbilt’s world record of 92.30 mph was first broken by Louis Ross in his steam powered car, the Wogglebug at 94.73 mph.  

Five minutes later that was broken by Arthur MacDonald in his Napier at 104.65 mph. The final record went to HL Bowden in his Mercedes at 109.76 mph! But that one wasn't recognized by the Automobile Club of France, since the car exceeded the 1000KG weight limit set by that sanctioning body.

With steam powered cars from the Stanley Steamer out selling gasoline powered cars, they wanted to prove how fast they were. In 1906 they went for the land speed record. Driver Fred Marriott bought the Rocket 2, the most aerodynamic car of the day, to Daytona. He set the record at 127.659. That held for 4 years! He

tried to break the 150-mph barrier in 1907, was going at 190, then hit a gully on the beach sending the car airborne. It split in 2 but, amazingly, he survived. Stanly Steamer pulled the car from racing feeling it could not withstand the speeds Fred could generate. Because of the crash no official speed record was made.

During this time 15 world records were set up to 1935. There were also wheel to wheel racing over a 3-mile course that was later expanded to 4.2 miles when racing resumed after World War II.

Jumping to the 1920’s Sir Malcom Campbell came to Daytona. He had already set 2 land speed records on the beaches in West Wales England at 146.163 mph in 1924 and 150.766 mph in 1925. He lost the title as the world’s fastest man in 1926 and went on to build his first Bluebird land speed race car. In 1927, on Daytona Beach he set a new record at 174.883 mph, came back and set it again in 1928 at 206.956 mph. Breaking the 200-mph barrier. Not to rest on his laurels in 1931 he came back setting records at 246.088 mph, then 253.968 mph in 32, 272.465 mph in 33, and 276.710 mph in 1935. All in pursuit of breaking the 300 mph barrier. On the run at 276.710 in 1935 he did break the barrier in one direction, exceeding 300 mph right on Daytona Beach! But the recorded record consisted of the average speed over a north south run. Wind picked up slowing him down on the return run. He finally broke the 300-mile barrier on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah in September of 1935. Remember this was all being done on the beach at low tide! Plus, the smoothness was set by the surf. It was decided they needed a wider surface as speeds exceeded 200 mph.

While land speed records moved to Utah wheel to wheel racing continued. The city promoting it in 1936, and then the Daytona Beach Elks club in 1937.  They both lost money. To keep it going promoting races was taken over by Bill France, SR in 1938, who finally turned a profit on both races that year. Back then there was a July race and one on Labor Day weekend. The vehicle of choice became cars you could buy off the lot or “stock” cars. While one chapter closed a new one opened up and the legacy of racing was just getting started!  

With the who’s who coming here for the racing activity, the east coast elite escaping the cold winters, plus savvy promotion of these events, and having railroad to bring people and equipment here, by the 1920’s Daytona Beach had its nickname “The World’s most Famous Beach”.

The next time you are on our beach sunning yourself, fishing, walking on the beach, catching a wave, or riding a bike on the sand, just think of who came before you. You are sharing the same sand that Rockefeller, Ford, Edison, Vanderbilt, and Campbell all came to. Maybe, if you really listen, you’ll even hear the distant sounds of our beach legacy. You can still do your own version of beach racing, at no more than 10 mph, and still drive on designated sections of our 28 miles of beach.

Oliver will never forget their first meeting.

He knew it the moment it happened, that it would stay engraved in his mind.

He knew it because she was like no other person he met for the last five years.

Five years where nothing good happened. Nothing he could bring home. Only death and threat, all fueling his guilt.

He came back, his own eyes cold, dead. He barely looked at himself in a mirror, fearing what his eyes would tell him. That he is a monster. That he shouldn’t have come back haunt his family. That he should have died on that island.

Oliver feared what the people who knew him before might see in his eyes. So he didn’t let them. He kept a facade, as much as he could really. And he was shocked that it seemed to work. How could they not see? How could they not turn around from his cold dead eyes? How could they not run away from the monster?

He couldn’t let them in, he couldn’t let them see.

But he saw.

He saw it all. Oliver saw how his mother looked at him at first. He saw the love and guilt and worry. But also the way her eyes were inquiring him, almost not trusting him. And how could he blame her?

Oliver couldn’t blame Thea either. She was his baby sister, who had grown up much too fast for his liking. And even though she refuted it, she will always be his baby sister and he will do everything to protect her innocence. Oliver couldn’t bare the look of worry and hurt she threw at him sometimes, when he lied to her, and she refused to believe his bullshit. He wished he didn’t have to, but he must protect her from this ugly world that surrounded them.

Oliver caught Tommy wary looks directed at him at moments. Oliver understood the reasons. Because despite his best efforts at keeping a mask, at acting like before he left, when he was just Ollie with no worries for tomorrow, Oliver knew he didn’t fool Tommy. They had known each other for as far as he could remember. Tommy had to see that his smiles didn’t reach his cold eyes. Tommy had to hear that his laughter sounded off.

Laurel wasn’t a liar. And her eyes didn’t lie either. The anger and the grief in them said it all. She was too wrapped up in those feelings she couldn’t see he was lying to her. Maybe it was best that way, for her sake. The truth was too ugly.

Oliver was able to disregard that, the hurt, the mistrust, the anger around him.

Oliver was on a mission. And for that his cold, dead eyes were a mean to an end. The dreadful criminals he was facing every night were afraid of his ice-cold, nonbeing eyes.

Oliver met her on a Wednesday.

He was stuck with a bullets ridden laptop, and he needed information from it. Oliver looked in Queen Consolidate IT department for someone who could help him and hopefully not gossip about it. Oliver though he got luck on his side for this one, finding out a young woman working in IT, he could easily charm her, being the heir of QC adding to it.

He entered the cubicle, finding a blonde chewing on a red pen. It was noon, most of the personnel was out for lunch, not her.

“Felicity Smoak?” he asked, “Hi, I’m Oliver Queen”, introducing himself just to make sure she recognized him. And she did.

Felicity turned around, her eyes dilated in shock, her lips parted letting go of the pen, before catching her breath.

“Of course! I know who you are, you are mister Queen” she stumbled on her words, her cheek turning red.

She looked up at him “Really? Because these looks like bullet holes”, she said clearly not believing him.

Oliver tried to keep a straight face “ My coffee shop is in a bad neighborhood.”

Then something happened. She looked at him straight in the eyes, pinching he lips, and he knew she didn’t believe his shit lie. She looked at him inquiring, searching something, searching him. And he let her.

Oliver held her gaze. Her eyes behind her glasses were blue and soft, transfixing and frank. There was no anger, no worry, no hurt, no grief. He didn’t find any glimpse of dupery or judgment.

And Oliver felt it, deep inside of him, warm settling in his body, crackling the ice in his body, spreading. Oliver wasn’t sure what it was, or what it meant. He wasn’t used to the feeling.

He broke the silence “If there is anything you could salvage from it, I would really appreciate it”

Finally, she must have found what she was looking for, and that thing didn’t totally repel her, whatever it was. Because then she nodded, accepting the task.

Oliver sight, relieved, and left, not completely understanding what just happened, but they had looked at each other and for the first time in a long time what he saw in her eyes didn’t unsettle him. He had looked in her eyes, and he saw her.

Razer Blade 15 Review — A Technical Marvel

I’m old enough that I (almost fondly) remember the origins of gaming laptops. Huge, loud, hot, and (typically) under-performing compared to their tower counterparts. And that was mainly how gaming laptops stayed — that is, until Razer nearly single-handedly changed the landscape offering a high-performing, attractive option under a reputable brand. Five years after their first launch of the Razer Blade, the Razer Blade 15 is on the market and is unequivocally the best gaming laptop of 2018.

To start things off, Razer is known for excellent design choices, and that carries over with the Razer Blade 15. An all-around upgrade to the stylish Razer Blade 14, the powerhouse seems like it is looking less like a beefed-up MacBook Pro thanks to more angular housing that comes off as sleek. The frame is solid and comfortably heavy, coming in just shy of five pounds (4.63 if we are being exact).

Bezel continues to be the big word of 2018, and the Razer Blade 15 manages to fit in a ton of screen into the real estate. The 15.6-inch display is surrounded by a 4.9mm bezel that makes the screen pop, thanks in part to the Full HD display.

Speaking more to the hardware itself, the Razer Blade 15 will have you covered in nearly every port that you need for gaming. Specifically, you will find three USB-A ports, one USB-C Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, mini DisplayPort, 3.5mm combo audio jack. Short of a dedicated Ethernet port, I’ve got no complaints with the makeup — just like pockets on dresses, any laptop with an Ethernet solution gets an automatic nod. Though one of the new base models does include that, albeit at the sacrifice of having a thicker base and slower refresh rates.

While I’m a huge fan of the unibody design that the Razer Blade 15 is going far, I have my qualms about the keyboard size — especially when it came to muscle memory. Compared to most other laptops (for instance, the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin) the Razer Blade 15’s keyboard is notably small.

Compacted due to a larger touchpad at the bottom of the rig and speakers on either side of the keyboard, playing League or Smite threw me for a loop. All of my muscle memory was slightly out of line, which isn’t typically a noticeable issue when switching to a new keyboard. On the other end, this is meant to become a dedicated system; at worst, expect only a few days of slight confusion and then you may glean some gameplay benefit over the shorter distance between keystrokes.

But speaking of the touchpad and speakers, you’ll have no qualms from me. In fact, the mild initial discomfort is (dare I say) worth it for the quality of the speakers and the large real estate you manage to draw from the touchpad. If you are buying Razer, there is a good chance you are already part of the Razer ecosystem with the desktop-based Nommo Chroma Speakers or the terrific Razer Nari Ultimate. Even still, I wouldn’t hesitate to play directly from the laptop than deal with wires because there isn’t a significant sacrifice in quality for general gaming purposes.

There are more than a few different variations you can buy the Razer Blade 15 in, with the base model (Full HD 60Hz GeForce GTX 1060) clocking in at just under $1,600. Meanwhile, the more souped-up 4K 60Hz GeForce GTX 1070 will land you as much as $2,800 when it comes back in stock, and is more in-line for the seasoned video editor or artistic soul. From a sheer gaming perspective, best bang for your buck is going to be the Full HD 144Hz GeForce GTX 1070 at $2,199 — though currently out of stock for the holiday season. However, it hits the best deal when it comes to cost, display quality/refresh rate, and graphics card for the more robust gaming experience.

All that power in such a thin, .68″ frame does come with its sacrifices. Specifically, heat dissipation. The Razer website advertises an “innovative vapor chamber cooling system,” but it came up well short of the goal. During my regular graphics testing on Kingdom Come Deliverance, the system got so hot that I had to move it from my lap to a dedicated cooling dock. Even on that, you can feel the heat on your palms. But on the plus side, not once did the laptop overheat, so the system is undoubtedly getting the cooling done… just not in a way that goes unnoticed.

When not under massive strain, there isn’t a ton of sound behind the fans — you can expect to listen to your K-POP (or whatever it is you pull up on Spotify) without hearing the roar of a jet engine behind it. Google Chrome would occasionally set it off, but everyday tasks will be easily navigated by the Razer Blade 15 with cold and fast precision.

Now the meat of the matter: gaming. The great news is everything big in 2018 runs fantastically on the Razer Blade 15. Whether I was putting on single-player stalwarts like Kingdom Come Deliverance or the new Just Cause 4, or I was venturing into multiplayer territory with Battlefield V, the Razer Blade 15 could run the game smooth like butter. While there is a lot to be said on how the tech specs speak to this, so too does the Razer Synapse software that notably improves performance in Gaming Mode. It’s a tinkering tool and unnecessary to most anyone… but for all of us that like to min-max our gaming experiences, this isn’t something be ignored.

Outside of gaming software, I have to give Razer props for not stocking the Razer Blade 15 up with a ton of bloatware. While I’ve had more than a fair share of gaming PC’s that come with mobile games and ancillary programs that slow down the system on day one, the Razer Blade 15 ships barebones and perfect with just Synapse being the main add-on. And thankfully, Synapse is useful and localized to that one tool — you won’t have to be shifting through multiple applications to change up your RGB backlight.

While you are always going to want to plug in when playing some high-intensity games, simple tasks like answering email and watching some Netflix seemed to hit around five hours of battery (if not a bit over). I was wowed by that number — my MSI GS65 Stealth hits slightly under that, though my day-to-day MacBook Pro hits well above that at around 8 hours. Though if you are buying a gaming PC for basic tasks like web surfing and streaming, you aren’t getting the benefit of the hardware to begin with.

We are likely decades away from the perfect gaming PC, but the Razer Blade 15 is the closest to perfect we’ve seen so far. Despite some small sacrifices for both style and comfort, the Razer Blade 15 shows that a company as big as Razer isn’t resting on their laurels �� in fact, they still provide the heaviest competition for any brand big or small on the market.

If you aren’t planning on building your own PC anytime soon or are just looking for gaming on the go, Razer Balde 15 is the best that money can buy (even if it is a lot of money). While anyone grabbing the hardware for anything but gaming is missing the main draw, it is a dollar well spent for any novice or experienced PC gamer and will be difficult for them to top on their next revision.
