One of the first bargain bin cd gems I ever remember distinctly buying on zero-knowledge and all instinct. It was a radio promo copy of the album Sleeper, by Boston-based Tribe, who lasted a half dozen years and two full length releases on a major label before folding in the mid 90s. Walter Plunkett was an award winning costume designer, perhaps best known for for his work on “Gone with the Wind” (1939). In 1951, he was one of three credited designers on “American in Paris” (1951). His contribution was for Beaux Arts Ball sequence in the film. The three designers shared the Academy Award at the 24th Oscar ceremony in 1952.

As a young man, Plunkett studied law at University of California at Berkeley, but he discovered his true passion - acting. In 1923, his father bought him a ticket to New York and encouraged him to give Broadway a try.

Although Plunkett was cast in several productions, he found greater success in costume design. He was encouraged by friend and fellow designer Howard Greer to go to Hollywood, where Greer was already ensconced.

Many of the costume designers for the major studios were gay. Hollywood gave Plunkett the opportunity to openly live life as a gay man. Friend Don Bacardy (partner to Christopher Isherwood) once said of him:

“I'd say Walter Plunkett was very at ease with who he was.”

In the 1940 U.S. Census, Plunkett identified his then lover as another member of his household, Hal Richardson, as his “partner.”

Satch LaValley, another close friend described how Plunkett would put up bail for gay men arrested for cruising Pershing Square or Griffith Park.

"He'd often post bail for boys who were arrested. He didn't even have to known them. That was just part of his nature. He'd hear of some boy's story and go down and try to help."

After his retirement in 1966, Plunkett lived in Santa Monica with his longtime companion Lee.

In an era with no gay rights and the idea of gay marriage unthinkable, Plunkett made plans to ensure Lee would inherit his estate after he passed… he adopted Lee as his son.

Plunkett died in 1982 at the age of 79.

5. A song you think most of your followers won’t have heard before

Tribe was a band from Boston who meant THE WHOLE WORLD to me in the '80s and '90s. I've written a lot about them on here before. Here's their love song to the Hadron atom-smasher, "Supercollider," live on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1994. Look at Janet LaValley at 2:38, good GOD ABOVE I was in love with her. They never broke through (because they were making this kind of music in the grungey '90s), but they were so so good. I saw them live so many times and every time it was the most important night of my life. My heart started to pound hearing the opening notes of this.

7. A song you know every word to

Sis, ALL OF THEM. Music is my strongest mnemonic device and I can usually sing along with 95+% accuracy after a handful of listens to anything. Here's another beauty few will have heard, but which I just sang from memory before searching for this (probably AI but I didn't make it) video. "And Dream of Sheep" is one of Kate Bush's most intimate vocals, with strange sweet lyrics and of course, that inimitable voice. Worth yr three minutes.

Sis and I took Mom to see Bernadette Peters with the Boston Pops Orchestra a few years ago, and I do not regret it for a second. She is a perfect Broadway diva. I'm telling you, she sang "Send in the Clowns," and I about had a nervous breakdown sobbing, it was gorgeous. This version of "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along at Steven Sondheim's 80th birthday concert was taped shortly after La Peters lost her beloved husband, which makes it so much more heartwrenching--her tears were genuine.

an intro; channing "stacks" lorenzo aka mitchell lavalley. despite what you see on tv, stacks is an average guy who may be a little too full of himself on occasion. his friends are like family and he will be damned if he allows his family to be disrespected. after breaking his girlfriends heart by cheating on her when she was out with an injury with a co-worker, he moved on quite quickly or so people think. he's good at hiding how he really feels and he is adamant to gain his exes trust again so they can rebuild and become somewhat civil. the woman he cheated with is still very much on the scene and as bad as that may look, to stacks, it's nothing serious. now single, he intends to stay that way and focus on his career. but don't be fooled, he does still very much care for the woman he once loved.

arianna grace - his girlfriend and the woman he once cheated on. after a long period of awkwardness between the two, they had started to build on their relationship. stacks worked to gain the woman’s trust again. The two were closer than ever and he felt it was time to officially make her his again.
