Layout & Grid Systems - Thursday 18th April
Marcus Ginns He's a professional photographer, set up his own business 15 years ago. had a few commercial jobs (orange, album covers, magazines). Go through brief and consider what you're doing, don't forget you have to keep up a blog (tumblr) during this project. 48 images in total for one subject, 16 across the layout, plus your own created layout. the rest of the images will go on tumblr. Sort out your project for next week, going through it next week. Make sure your photographs work with the typography on the page, think about where they will fit in. Put ideas, inspirations on your blog so that they know you have thought about it. Consider how you put your images onto the page. Think about how your eyes are drawn across the page. Get some Sunday supplements and go through them, look at the way they're laid out. Think about inspiration for this project, add these to your tumblr to gain extra marks. FORMATS All formats have their own energy created by the tension between height and width. The greater the difference, the stronger the energy and dynamism and so the rectangular format is the one that attracts the viewer the most. The horizontal rectangular format (landscape) opens itself invitingly to the viewer. Like a broad white screen in the cinema or a window with a panoramic sea view. THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89,... The first two numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two. THE VERTICAL RECTANGULAR format (portrait) unlike a calm horizontal landscape format this creates dynamic movement vertically. Portraits for example are actively scrutinised by zig zagging from the top downwards. The vertical format can sometimes be perceived as tight and Ungenerous or can be seen as a narrow doorway the leads to some tempting vista outside. THE SQUARE FORMAT is less common in visual communication. Photographers generally don't like it as the format itself doesn't 'do' anything. Squares are traditional viewed as symbolic of lack of change. However, as the shape is symmetrical in all aspects it can be a good format to show detail. CROPPING Dramatising - changing the angle or crop of an image can increase the dramatic impact it has. Presentative Image - the whole image Synectdoche (sinekt'kee) - part of something is used to refer to the whole thing. Focussing - closing in on detail can bring added human interest to as story, or make it more personal/human. Reducing - taking extraneous clutter or unwanted unnecessary elements out of an image. French Philosopher Roland Barthes identified 2 kinds of photographic image: STUDIUM - a general observation of the world around us. The image may not arouse great interest. Barthes noted these images belong more to the photographer than the viewer. These images are not 'experienced' by the viewer. PUNCTUM - Or 'something is wrong' It is as if a piece of the jigsaw is missing the viewer must look closer at the image to make sense of it to find an explanation which is not always there. This makes an emotional connection with the viewer which allows them to 'experience' the image.

Layout and Grid Systems - Project Brief
You will learn how the positioning of text and image can be used to enhance a piece of graphic design and deliver a competitive, creative or visual advantage.
You will begin to understand the difference in the needs and requirements of ‘clients’ and their ‘audience’
Successful editorial design has the ability to seize the immediate attention of the viewer, and to engage and motivate their audience.
The Brief
A Sunday Lifestyle Magazine is producing a series of pull-out features around the subject of ‘Weekend London’. The 4 titles are;
Parks
Markets
Speciality Shops
Lunch
Each subject uses the same grid and the same layout and the client requires a number of bespoke images, 16 across three pre determined layouts for each subject. (48 images in total)
1 x full bleed L/H
1 x Full bleed R/H
3 x portrait
2 x square B/W
9 to fit in grid colour and B/W
A fourth spread is free for you to design a layout based on the grid provided and provide photographic content using the client’s grid.
The content is up to you but should include a variety of images both figurative and detail that capture the atmosphere and show an understanding of the various elements that contribute to the cohesive visual look of the editorial piece.
Consider: balance, harmony, proportion, tension, movement, grouping and hierarchy You need to consider how the photographs work together as a spread and also the clients requirements for text.
Your work should be constructed in Indesign.
You will also be required to keep a blog or digital sketchbook of your process. You will be required to present this in a short presentation at the end of the unit.

Layout and Grid Systems Plan
My choice for this project is to do it based on Parks and the idea of a secluded getaway in the middle of a big city. I particularly am a fan of inner city parks and think they are great photographic subjects, particularly during the summer months when the sun is out and people are enjoying themselves. They offer a great juxtaposition between city life and secluded relaxation. The three parks I have chosen to use for my project are as follows: --> Hyde Park: this will offer the readers a more popular park that can be busy at times but may offer more to do. --> Greenwich Park: this park will offer somewhere with great views that people can go to if they want to relax with a great view and Greenwich is also a great place for eateries and shopping. --> Battersea Park: this park will offer a bit more seclusion for readers if they want it. It doesn't offer as much to do but may be better for readers who want a nice walk in an inner city park. --> Richmond Park: this will offer readers the chance to see a bit more wildlife which will appeal to readers with a more keen sense of environmentalism. I will try and get these images done when it is sunny and will aim for about 15-20 images from each park. Most of the parks I have chosen are on the south side of the river as well which will offer readers a taste of what life on the south side is like, because most attractions are in northern London.
