Instead of a new sketch to close out this month of #leafycarnivores here are some progress sketches for some of those final pieces. Late in the day, today’s #leafycarnivores sketch is Sarracenia Minor. For me the most striking element of this plants pitchers are the well defined white spots. I’m excited to join my awesome friend @laurelinrian for her #2018dailycreature this month - #leafycarnivores ! We discovered a shared obsession with keeping carnivorous plants, and when she let me in on the theme I couldn’t resist. Starting with a page of sarracenia purpurea sketches to get past a bit of self consciousness over rough process sketches - notes to myself and wee thumbnails of ideas included. Today’s #leafycarnivores is my personal favorite - Sarracenia Flava. I start with some sketches to figure out the form then explore simplifying the shape. Fun fact: the large yellow flowers are said to smell like cat-pee. I went back to it to do a more proper illustration of it to match the rest of the Sarracenia family. A touch of repetition here but I thought a process image might be interesting. Cleaned up sketches for all the carnivores ready to become final images. I like to do a tight final sketch so that finishing can be a nice peaceful process. #leafycarnivores may be over but over at @laurelinrian a new month of #2018dailycreature has begun along with a new collaboration. Tonight’s #leafycarnivores are another little North American sundew- Drosera capillaris. Apparently so similar to brevifolia that Wikipedia has some mislabeled photos.
