learningtheways replied to your post: “Calendar”:
Thank you very much! I was looking for dates for Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane (which I am forever spelling wrong) and Lughnasa. I'm assuming it's Lughnasa, August - Beltane, May - Samhain, November (1st? After Oíche Shamhna?) My assumptions are completely based on the Irish names for the months, but do they have specific dates? Am I correct in saying that Imbolc coincides with St Brigid's Day? Thank you for your help x
So, for consistency, I spelled all the names as the Old Irish: Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasa. In Modern Irish, the names are (respectively): Oíche Shamhna, Lá Fhéile Bríde, Bealtaine, and Lúnasa.
Your assumptions based on the Irish names for the months are completely correct! One thing to keep in mind though is that the day began at sunset in pre-Christian Ireland, so most of the holidays start the night before the first of the month. This is most popularly recognized with Samhain (Oct 31st), but it also applies to the other three (especially Beltane.)
And you are correct that Imbolc coincides with St Brighid’s Day -- and there’s good evidence to suggest that St. Brighid’s Day was at the very least inspired by Imbolc. It gets really muddy real quick trying to piece apart if St. Brighid is the same as goddess Brighid and if Imbolc originally had anything to do with Brighid or if that got added on when St Brighid became a thing. It’s commonly thought though that Imbolc inspired or even just is St. Brighid’s Day.
A really good book on the subject of the Irish holidays, by the way, is The Year in Ireland by Kevin Danaher. He goes through so many customs that people in Ireland have -- by county, by decade, etc. It’s super useful!

Thank you very, very much, again! Most of our holidays have been confirmed as stemming from our older, pre-Christian traditions, so the connections of Bríd are most likely not conincedential. Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated.
Well, customers may be pre-Christian, but the holidays themselves aren’t -- if that makes sense haha.
Anyway, no problem! Good luck :)
