Snape is so whumpable. Plotter whump, pantser whump. Anything works! Probably why Snape fics have this range of characterization for him and the types of whumps he gets.

I didn't talk names because I didn't want anybody to feel excluded. It's a huge fandom and my reading time now is just parking lots and lunchbreaks. So this is totally subjective and doesn't mean anything about the fics I did not read. YMMV.

The big ones where they definitely feel seriously, seriously plotted are Acid + Sinick's fics which are consistently in the longfic zone and always have brilliant, clear plots. Also +1 on Femme's fics. Their Snarry Dystopian Political AU is really organized on plot/pacing. Love that fic. But the method sounds ultra hardcore like Crossfit or something. Good for them for mastering it and also good for me as a reader! Also get a similar vibe from pir8fancier's fics.

I am still reading The Curse of Anteros. Danni's longfic vibe definitely is giving meticulous plotter to me :D With like mini breaks of indulgence :D :D Obviously Danni can correct me. Fics by Squibstress also feel this way to me. Like it's meticulously plotted/outlined/planned but with some gaps for indulgence. You probably don't have ships/fandoms with hollycomb. But they are also in this zone I feel. Also ripeteeth! DementorDelta's fic also gives that vibe.

Also I am thinking about the Fanfic Maverick Podcasts. When Danni talks about her fics she has a lot of attention to detail about the process itself and she can actually articulate it! Which is ultra impressive! Meanwhile you talked about The White Road and I really got into The Waste Land and also 2xed my Snape feels but I don't really feel you were that clear about your process :D Sorry. Danni does it better <3

Delphi is probably the most intentional writer I have read in Snape fandom. It's not just the plot. Reading their fics it feels to me like they really know the world they want to build/why/how. After reading the behind the scenes notes for Remember Me from Cheetham Hill I am just wow. I also feel I can trust them with a canon rewrite. Their Snape/OMC fic, The Lych Yew Gambit, is essentially a canon rewrite but the coolest version ever <3 I almost chose Fantastic Beasts for the abandoned/WIP slot in hprecfest but I didn't really want to do that because their fic notes/comments give the feeling they are planning more and their writing definitely feels like it's got so much intention/deliberation going on behind the scenes.

Kelly Chambliss is intensely plotter I feel! Scioscribe also feels really intentional plotter type in their writing. But of course they don't normally go for the longfic longfic zone.

One of my fav Eldritcher memories is during Frabjous. They made me listen to like a dozen classical music snippets with lots of white noise breaks. It was like visiting the optometrist. This one or that one, this one or that one :D Of course I picked the most dramatic whumpable one. Which turned out to be something from Parsifal by Wagner. Eldritcher really doesn't like Wagner musically but they wrote a variation of that Parsifal snippet for Frabjous. I feel I made a great choice after I read the fic :D My Snape whump vibe match radar is awesome! :D But it was pretty interesting to me how they did derivative fan music just like derivative fanart/fanfiction. They genuinely seem to love doing that and their passion generally transfers into their fics but I can definitely see why it can feel weird/pretentious to some folks because maybe it just feels like a different leftbrain/rightbrain ratio. Personally I love it once I get into the fic but these things are subjective.

One of the writers I really find kind of hard to categorize is Rinsbane. They have some fics like Teatray which give real pantser vibes but a lot of their long fics have sharp plotter vibes.

Tryfanstone's fic definitely feels the opposite of plotter for me. I love their works for a lot of reasons but also because of that vibe.

FWIW I definitely didnt think you are flailing on The Afterlight. It felt like you found the perfect "base" casefic for building your passionate darkfic tower. But not saying no to iddy Snape bleeding on the furniture :D You whump him so perfectly and I love <3

(This sounds mysterious and a wee bit pretentious, but it’s also just purely, fannishly impulsive: the desire to write a scene in which Snape’s bleeding out and Harry’s holding his hand, and there are Feelings thronging the air, but like, this is not the right moment, plus nobody’s able to be even slightly articulate for obvious reasons. I just wanted to whump Snape and then wade around in all that desperation and old-school anguish, plus the panic and self-recrimination and back-pedaling that comes from the fallout and Harry freaking out about Snape basically taking a bullet for him. But the image - the image was Snape lying in the dark on a sofa in Spinner’s End, bloody and unconscious while Harry crouched on the cushion beside him pleading with him not to die. Very standard fannish fare.)

Ooh! Want! This really really reminds me of the scene in And Mine the Gall in the infirmary between Harry and Albus Severus for some reason. Esp He goes back to consuming Harry with his eyes. Harry lets him, returning the look, glad of it, his heart aching with relief. Obviously that fic is not a Snarry Snarry but I feel the whump/desperation/panic/everything just destroyed me in that scene like the layers and also like a mirror of the waking up that didn't happen in the Shack.

Your vision doesn't really sound pretentious but it definitely sounds mysterious. Pretentious is a really complicated word :D It's usually just one person's earnestness feeling like pretentiousness to somebody else I feel. At least in fanfic setting. Obviously some things are just pretentious but at that point they also feel less curious/more rigid?

You said Waterloo so I have to go there. The new Napoleon movie doesn't go anywhere interesting but I feel one thing I felt was that Ridley Scott the director was in bad pantser mode. He didn't really indulge in the things he found lovable and kind of indulged on the things he hated which really comes across to an audience and it didn't work. Another movie I saw recently was Saltburn. Also serious pantser vibes. But the director, Emerald Fennell, definitely indulged on the stuff she was iddy about and it shows! I feel those movies are easier to watch/love because somehow the creator's passion also reaches the audience? I feel it's the same with fic for me as a reader. When the author's passion feels iddy/curious/genuine/earnest I love the pantser fics <3

With the visual comes sound. The characters’ voices, for one. Rain, fire crackling, the sound of choking, the messy noises of an isolated sexual encounter. Music, if it’s part of the fic. I don’t smell things (figuratively speaking) until I’m in the act of writing the scene, and fragrances arise from hyperfixating on whatever emotional or sensual impact I’m trying to convey. Tactile experiences are similar. Do I want to describe the nap of the rug they’re lying on? Maybe. Or the uncomfortable quality of cold rain dripping down one’s neck.

This is actually making a lot of sense! Because when reading your fics I often get the impression you left some sensory things out deliberately but I didn't really know you were this deliberate about selecting which ones are working for the scene you want. This makes a lot of sense esp with what you have talked about your editing pattern.

Trope and AU writers also feel great at plots. I don't normally read those but I feel fics with complicated stuff like soulmates, timetravel, crossovers generally feel like they were written by more plotter types. Of course the ultra plotter types are in those casefic fandoms like Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Who/Broadchurch. Also the canon rewrite authors. They are just superhuman plotter folks <3 Probably also Supernatural/X files type monster of the week fandoms but I don't really go there.

When the pandemic was going on I got to read a lot of new authors. I feel most of them started out self indulgent panster vibes but then maybe they started taking it more seriously and got into plotter vibe. Over time I feel most of them kind of found their groove/balance/what worked for them based on their readers and their writing taste. But it was pretty cool to see the progression as a reader! I feel a lot of that depending on the fandom/subfandom/ship/the core group of other writers they were close to. Of course headcanons can get around because of group/discord servers but I feel it's also true sometimes for the plotter/pantser thing maybe because they do writing sprints together or something.

I saw the movie Leon the Professional with a friend. I love the dirtybadhotwrong destruction/devotion of the dynamic between Leon and Mathilda. My friend got super interested in the AU scenario where the mafia boss hired Mathilda and she became a hitman. My friend had a total outline of this what if AU plotted out. It was super impressive. Meanwhile I was just vibing with the feels and I didn't really understand why this alternate scenario was super interesting. So maybe the readers/audience also have different tastes between plotter vibes and pantser vibes :D

But also what I want from plotter and pantser fics are kind of different. Like for pantser fics to work for me I need some match with things that are funny/sensual/emotional/interesting for me. Plotter fics have a good structure/outline so I dont really feel like I need a 100% match with my vibe to love the fic. But tbh most of the time for fanfic I am here as a pantser reader wanting the indulgence vibes :D

Really happy you are not planning a year by year canon rewrite. I don't trust you to write my MVPs like Lupin and Hagrid for example :D :D <3 Just kidding. If you actually go for that rewrite I am going to have a great time reccing it on the main hpfic subs. They are so going to scream and faint :D :D :D It will be like Halloween everyday! :D

Most of my fav longfic authors are pantsers not plotters :D Starting to realize when I am creating recs for the hprecfest. These fics are Feel and Vibe fics. Where are we going? Some idea about ending but nobody knows the actual route. Maybe the next chapter knows. But we are going to get there. Meanwhile we can feel with the characters and have fun. We dont have a plan but we definitely have a feeling :D
