thinking about the parallels between dunmeshi and beastars. consumption as an act of love. to love is to consume and to be consumed. you cannot gorge yourself because if you take everything then there is nothing left to be loved, and you cannot let yourself be gorged completely because then you will be empty, gone. i could think about this forever

Book thoughts: Bunny
2 ✰
I now know why everyone has a hard time reviewing this book.
The first 30% was super boring, but at part two things got JUICY. The lack of individuality? tea. then it got boring again. Then the ending... I'm not sure what that was. Maybe I'm not smart enough for this because I didn't understand the ending and it seemed to come out of nowhere. I feel like nothing was explained, things happened randomly and were "open to interpretation" (pg 263); not my cup of tea. the good parts of this book were super good and the bad parts were super bad...my feelings are very complicated. once i stopped looking at this as a contemporary and more like magical realism, i started enjoying it more. ultimately, a lot of this book had just too many confusing and boring parts for me for me to enjoy the book overall.
I feel that the supernatural element detracted from the "anyone can be in a cult" aspect, because exploding heads are not common place. like maybe i'm built different, but after that i would leave. I can't understand why samantha want to be friends with them so bad, and why she tolerates them to the extent that she does. At this point she just has no survival instinct and is, officially, a dumb bitch™
The writing was really good, and you could always tell samantha's state of mind by what she called the bunnies (their names, the nicknames she made for them, or bunny). but the plot? not so much

When Haru invited Legoshi over to her new apartment all he could think about was how much of a buffoon he would look like cramped onto her bunny-sized couch, or how he'd have to hold it if he needed to use the bathroom since he'd no doubt break a toilet built for someone her size. He arrived to see the front door was larger than expected and let out a restrained sigh, this place was clearly intended for larger herbivores like deer or goats and Haru had step stools scattered about to reach some of the larger installations of the house. As he followed her inside however it soon became clear he'd have to stay crouched over to avoid hitting the roof or light fixtures. Cearly Haru saw how sore his neck was after barely a minute of standing and brought him into her compact kitchen to sit down.
Despite Legoshi hugging his legs to his chest he was comfortable resting in her little home, the soft midday light and savoury smell of turmeric coming from their lunch on the stove made him smile briefly. When his eyes refocused Haru was smiling back at him from next to the stove and the sudden eye contact made him both run red in the face and begin sweating coldly down the back of his neck. I think she could tell he doesn't really visit friend's often and that thought made him even redder has he stammered to find a way to talk about literally anything.
When lunch was ready Haru filled two bowls fit for Legoshi's size and pushed her chair nice and close to Legoshi despite the amount of space available on the table . They ate amidst easy conversation.

I think that Beastars is the best example of a fantasy media that started out as one explicit metaphor, but the world building itself was so nuanced and rich that it stands alone and very quickly outgrows the original metaphor.
Like Beastars could first be seen as racial and cultural minorities in a mono ethnic Japan, but then there’s the growth suppressants, interspecies families, criminal records, dietary needs, genetic behavioral traits, accessibility in architecture and fashion, environmental needs, and don’t even get me started on ocean characters v land!
And then this metaphor for xenophobia can’t apply anymore, because it’s become so much more!! It’s become a malleable world where every “us v them” issue takes shape. Stigma against felons, disabilities, nature v nurture, racial bias, cultural differences, even how a society addresses scarcity!
Idk if y’all know of other worlds that have this “issue”, but I would be fascinated to hear about them
