The village Slovenská Ľupča organised the 20th annual Turíčny Jarmok (fair) on May 28th. How lucky was I to be at the right place and time! "The organizers believe that you will taste local specialties, see the secrets of ancient crafts, support domestic producers and the good mood will accompany you with a varied program." - https:///podujatia/turicny-jarmok-2022/ Yes, indeed! So many crafty individuals making candles, dolls, utensils, yarn, etc. Local food, drinks, and desserts everywhere! Performances by children, adolescents and adults in traditional costumes - love it!!! Even those mending the stalls donned something tradtional! The medieval section was awesome! Added bonus for kids - fun rides. If only! I was told that it was the biggest and most interesting fair yet! It was a PROPER fair. All thanks to my friend for this brilliant idea! It's history, culture, arts and food all in one - my kind of travel! I should come back 10 years later. Kalište was a former village in the Banská Bystrica district in the Slovak Republic. It was destroyed by the Nazis during the Slovak National Uprising in Second World War. Kalište is remote, 924 metres above sea level in the hills north-east of the town. It was an ideal place for partisans who had taken part in the Slovak National Uprising to seek supplies and occasionally shelter in the winter of 1944–5. At 4 a.m. on March 18, 1945, Nazi German troops arrived. The villagers were shot as they emerged from their houses and the village was then burned to the ground. Five days later the area was liberated by the advancing Soviet Army. Only two houses now remain; stone foundations mark the sites of the other 36. The museum has erected information boards about the massacre around the site. On the way to Pomník - Vypálená obec Kalište (Monument - Burnt village Kalište), I saw HUGE cows. My friend asked if I wanted to stop for pictures, I declined (didn't want her to stop the car just for cows 😂) but she stopped anyway, thanks, Klaraaaaa🥰. Slovakian cows are really huge. Love the colours too. After snapping some pics, I turned around and saw a deer!!! I tapped Klara's arm and she was surprised too as she has never seen one! A forester came out of his house, and of course I took that opportunity to ask a million questions (sorry, Klara!); thankfully she's there to help me ask and translate. He seemed unfriendly; he went back into the house 🤷🏽‍♀️. He appeared again, with a huge pepper! He called the deer (who hid after seeing Klara and I) and it ran towards him. The forester wasn't unfriendly, he just went back in to get food for Nyu Nyu/Nyoo Nyoo (???) the deer. Nyu Nyu is one of the two deers in the area; he is 13 years old. The forester shared that deers usually live till 25 but unfortunately they don't, because bears and wolves attacks. Oh deer! Bears and wolves are protected in Slovakia, by the way. The forester has the biggest dogs ever.
