"Hi, I only have 45 minutes before my ferry leaves for Tallinn. My only wish is to try the reindeer steak!" Yep! I tried the elk burger too ❤️ What a great meal after 10 hours of walking around Helsinki! Glad I found this place in Google Maps. Staff were dressed in traditionally, they were very helpful, recommended the better reindeer dish and also explained what's in front if me when my food arrived. "Both the authentic interior and the dishes, served in original style, have been inspired by the Finnish forests and thousands of lakes with a dash of Finnish “sisu” and logging traditions. Savotta’s kitchen cherishes the Finnish food tradition. We use only Finnish ingredients from the pristine forests and lakes and from carefully selected small suppliers." www.ravintolasavotta.fi #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #leladevours #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Ravintola Savotta) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg2PfHThA-L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lyhdynkantajat (Finnish for "the lantern bearers") is a group of sculptures at the front door of the Helsinki Central Station. The sculptures were designed by Emil Wikström, one of the most important sculptors during the Golden Age of Finnish Art. Completed in 1914, Lyhdynkantajat is part of the facade of the Art Nouveau station designed by Eliel Saarinen. Four male figures made of granite bear spherical lamps in their hands which light up at night. The square-jawed figures have muscular chests, but the bottom parts of their bodies consist of columns decorated in a way typical to Saarinen. They have haircuts typical of the Awakening movement. The sculptures have been compared to massive stone sculptures found in Egyptian and Assyrian sculpture art. Wikström was interested in ancient sculpture art, and the figures were inspired by ancient herms, columns whose upper part was sculpted to resemble a human figure, originally that of the god Hermes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyhdynkantajat #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #architecture #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Helsinki Central railway station) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg3y2AYOCYL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In 1991, the Suomenlinna fortress was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique monument of military architecture. It has served in the defence of three realms: Sweden, Russia and Finland. It also continues to be a living, tended and inhabited district of the city of Helsinki. The World Heritage Site includes seven islands. Originally named Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes), or Viapori as referred to by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed in Finnish to Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still known by its original name in Sweden and by Swedish-speaking Finns. https://www.suomenlinna.fi/en/world-heritage/whs-suomenlinna/ #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #history #unesco #fortress #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Suomenlinna / Sveaborg) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg2Kro9Bgyz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The House of the Estates was built in 1888-1890 and inaugurated in January 1891. Architect Gustaf Nyström designed the building. The familiar design of Greek temple facades, complete with columns, adorns the facade of the House. The tympanum depicts a group of symbolic bronze figures, completed by sculptor Emil Wikström in 1903, the central figure being the Russian Emperor Alexander I confirming the laws and national rights of Finland. The building was used by the three common estates of the realm of Finland: the clergy, burghers and peasants. However, the building was too small to house the unicameral parliament that superseded the estates in 1906. Today the dignified Neo-Renaissance building serves as a venue for meetings and official functions held by the Prime Minister’s Office and other offices of the central government. The next time I'm in Heksinki, I'd like to explore what's in the building and the surrounding park 💚 https://valtioneuvosto.fi/en/premises/goverment/house-of-the-estates https://vihreatsylit.fi/en/saatytalonpuisto/ #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Kruununhaka) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgw1Mn3BCto/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Streets names in Helsinki are named after animals and flowers! They are written in both Finnish and Swedish. The origin of the animal pictures goes back to the Swedish urban nomenclature system of the 19th century. Back then every block or quarter in Stockholm was given a name in addition to a number. Owners of the corner buildings had to put signs with the name of the quarter. City blocks were given names along with numbers because they were easier to remember. In 1820 the same system was implemented in Helsinki. City blocks were named after domestic, wild animals and flowers. In the new city suburbs names of fish and birds were used. It is interesting that names of blocks in one district had to belong to the same theme. The practice of giving names along with the numbers ceased in 1890s and since early 1910 Helsinki blocks have been indicated by numbers only. The signs were reintroduced in 2000s by the city of Helsinki in the centre as a nice memento of times long gone. That unicorn though. Imagine if this is the case in Singapore... With our four official languages... In the pest district... "Lepak where tonight?" "Void deck siput babi ah." "Eh Timah, move house ah?" "A'ah...block pulu there." "Ni zai na li?" "Bed bugs." "S/cappitu?" "OK set. Prata. At ka choah." #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Helsinki, Finland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CguUPZBhC8L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Saw this beautiful sculpture but I couldn't find any info when I was there, and even after looking at my photo's location tag today. Luckily a friend reached out, asking if I'm still there... I forgot he's Finnish! We met in Uzbekistan years ago. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find". Now I know what to Google, thanks, Johannes! Sculpture: Pietarin kalasaalis. Peter's Draught of Fish is a ceramic tile relief made by Carl Wilhelms in 1951. The subject of the work is from the New Testament where Jesus is teaching a fisherman named Peter. He tells Peter to row the boat to deep water and cast his nets. Peter replies that he has been fishing all night with no catch. Yet he does what Jesus asks of him and receives a miraculous draught of fish. The biblical relief by sculptor Carl Wilhelms, husband of famous actress Ella Eronen was commissioned for the wall of the building by architect Jorma Järvi from 1954. The yellowish color matches the skirting board tiles and balconies forming an excellent representative of the period when Finnish design started to emerge internationally. - Trip Advisor #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #architecture #art #sculpture #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Helsinki) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgrp_KNhJj7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Helsinki Cathedral is the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, located in Kruununhaka in the centre of Helsinki at the Senate Square. This neoclassical style church was originally built from 1830 to 1852 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. It was also known as St Nicholas's Church until the independence of Finland in 1917. It is a major landmark of the city, and possibly the most famous structure in Finland. - Wikipedia #helsinki #finland #travel #gltlove #sofetravel #architecture #cathedral #traveladdict #travelfinland #lelsinhelsinki (at Helsinki Senate Square) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgo_664hswA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
