New article: The Day of the Jackal: Who is Eddie Redmayne?
As he takes on the role of the ultimate assassin, here’s everything you need to know about The Day of the Jackal’s leading man, Eddie Redmayne.
Who is Eddie Redmayne?
Eddie Redmayne, born in 1982, is a British actor born and raised in London, England.
His great-grandfather, Sir Richard Redmayne, was a civil and mining engineer, credited for his work in improving mine safety and for his advocacy of the benefits of a five-day working week on employees, helping make weekends a more standard practice.
Wanting to perform from an early age, he attended Jackie Palmer Stage School from the age of 10 and made his screen debut in an episode of kids TV series Animal Ark in 1998.
He later landed a music scholarship at the esteemed Eton College, attending the same year as Prince William.
Going on to study at Cambridge University, he made his professional debut as an actor at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2003 in a production of Twelfth Night.
From that point on, he established himself as one to watch on the British stage and later pivoted to film, where he took on dramatic roles in films including 2007’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Yellow Handkerchief in 2008, and My Week with Marilyn in 2011.
In 2012, Redmayne grew international acclaim for portraying Marius in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, and two years later landed his first Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in biopic The Theory of Everything.
He continues to act on both stage and screen, earning another Oscar nomination in 2015 for his role of Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, and leading the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise as Newt Scamander.
The Day of the Jackal is his first major TV role in 12 years.
On stage, he has most recently led revivals of Cabaret in the West End and Broadway, starring as the elusive and mysterious Emcee.
He has been married to wife Hannah Bagshawe since 2014, and together they have two children.
Who does Eddie Redmayne play in The Day of the Jackal?
The Jackal is a notorious assassin who lives a normal double life away from his murderous career path.
A natural chameleon, The Jackal has an innate ability to blend in with a crowd and change his appearance at will, meaning his targets never see him coming.
He is a man who prefers to work alone, considering each of his missions an art form.
Little is known about the character as we’re introduced to him, with his ability to camouflage himself leaving him free to do his work undetected.
The role was portrayed by Edward Fox in the 1973 movie adaptation of the story.
Find out more about the other cast and characters from The Day of the Jackal here.
Where have I seen Eddie Redmayne before?
Eddie Redmayne has become one of the most sought-after British stars in the world, with an enviable list of previous projects.
Here are some of his most notable roles to date:
My Week With Marilyn (2011) - Colin Clark
Based on the memoir of Colin Clark, My Week With Marilyn follows the aspiring filmmaker as he travels to London in 1956 to land a job with the celebrated Laurence Olivier.
Landing a position on The Prince and The Showgirl, Colin finds himself working as an assistant and pseudo-protector of the iconic Marilyn Monroe (played by Michelle Williams), who is having trouble in her personal life and marriage to Arthur Miller.
Across a fateful week, Colin and Marilyn grow closer as the Hollywood star adjusts to England, her current life, and her work with Olivier.
Les Miserables (2012) - Marius Pontmercy
Based on the book by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables is an adaptation of the musical of the same name.
Redmayne plays Marius Pontmercy, a compassionate young man who is a member of the revolutionary group, Friends of the ABC.
He instantly falls in love with Cosette, the adopted daughter of leading man Jean Valjean, upon meeting her.
This causes the heartbreak of his best friend Eponine, who is secretly in love with him.
Devoted to both his cause and his love, Marius is torn on his loyalties as the revolution turns violent and he leads the rebels on the barricades.
The Theory of Everything (2014) - Stephen Hawking
This biographical drama depicts the early life and first marriage of the legendary Stephen Hawking, detailing his work, health, and romantic life.
First meeting Hawking as an astrophysics student at the University of Cambridge, he meets young literature student Jane Wilde and falls in love.
Together, they will navigate the success of his career and his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive form of motor neurone disease that leads to slurred speech, muscle stiffness, and difficulty breathing.
The incurable and eventually fatal disease would eventually confine Hawking to a wheelchair, where he would communicate via a computer for the rest of his life.
The show is based on the 2007 memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen written by Jane, who married Hawking in 1965.
The Theory of Everything is available now on Sky and NOW.
The Danish Girl (2015) - Lili Elbe
The Danish Girl is a story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish painter Lili Elbe – who became one of the first recorded people to have gender-affirming surgery.
Lili’s story inspired the novel of the same title by David Ebershoff.
Starting the story in the mid-1920s, The Danish Girl tracks the awakening of Lili’s transgender identity.
Married to portrait artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander), Lili comes out as transgender after posing as a woman for one of her wife’s paintings.
The film tracks the barriers Lili had to face in order to get the surgery, and the support Gerda was throughout the transition.
The Danish Girl  is available now on Sky and NOW
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) - Newt Scamander
An extension of the Harry Potter Wizarding World, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows Newt Scamander decades before the original Harry Potter series.
Newt is a ‘magizoologist’ who travels the globe to document the wizarding world’s magical creatures but finds himself in trouble in 1926 New York City when his suitcase gets into the wrong hands, with animals let loose across the human city.
Now he’s on a mission to gather them all or risk exposing the entire wizarding world – but as he does so, he finds himself dealing with growing unrest that could prove a more devastating threat on the world as they know it.
The franchise has since had two more installments: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2016, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2018.
The Trial of the Chicago Seven (2020) - Tom Hayden
Based on true events that occurred in 1968, The Trial of the Chicago Seven follows seven men as they are arrested and charged with "crossing state lines" to incite a riot during an anti-Vietnam protest at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
As the trial gets underway, it becomes apparent the judge has a prejudice against them, with ongoing issues, stunts, and uncovering of brutality turning the courtroom into a circus.
The film was widely praised and was even nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, at the 2021 Academy Awards, as well as three Baftas and five Golden Globes.
The Trial of the Chicago Seven is available to watch on Netflix....
The Day of the Jackal coming 7 November exclusively on Sky Atlantic and NOW.

So there you go. The original production of Les Mis is no more. It was an honour to be there and see it sent off. The backbone of my adult life, there is no trace of hyperbole when I say all the good things I have are a result of being in that show. (1/3)
— David Thaxton (@YoungThacko)
But beyond my (long) personal involvement in this production it was just a joy to witness it with no agenda in all it’s glory. The most wonderful design, totally revolutionary staging and (IMO) the greatest work of direction in musical theatre history. It’s unsurpassable. (2/3)
— David Thaxton (@YoungThacko)
I will never understand why this original production ended but I will forever be beyond grateful for what Les Miserables has done for me as a person. I know the show itself isn’t closing but I feel like it is. Goodbye and thank you. Fucking thank you. Xxx (3/3)

What made you fall in love with theatre ?
It’s hard to pin it down to one thing. There are three stages.
1. Phantom of the Opera when I was 8. My mum got the DVD of the movie for her birthday and she tried to watch it alone while my sister and I were playing outside but we were drawn in by the sounds of the overture and were transfixed. We then went to see it in London about once a year for a while and it wasn’t theatre as a whole then, it was just phantom.
2. One fine day in the year of our lord 2008 we went to London to catch a phantom show but there were no decent seats. My mum said “why don’t we see les miserables, I hear it’s good!” I didn’t want to, but I agreed because ‘that man you liked as the phantom’ was in it (cough no guesses who that was cough) and oh boy. It blew my mind. The cast were absolutely stellar and we booked to see them again as soon as we got home.
3. The 2010 donmar production of Passion. Booked it solely for thaxton but it opened my eyes to sondheim and yeah just…something about that production changed me. It was amazing. It was after that that I knew theatre was pretty much going to take over my life.
So yeah basically I think I have my mother to thank for my love of theatre but also Earl Carpenter:)

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Duisburg - 1996 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Jerzy Jeszke (Jean Valjean), Hardy Rudolz (Javert), Cornelia Drese (Fantine), Deborah Dutcher (Cosette), Felix Martin (Marius), Sanni Luis (Éponine), Martin Berger (Enjolras), Tom Zahner (Thénardier), Anne Welte (Madame Thénardier), Willi Welp (The Bishop) Les Misérables - Dutch Revival - Spring, 2008 FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: René van Kooten (Jean Valjean), Wim van den Driessche (Javert), Nurlaila Karim (Fantine), Suzan Seegers (Cosette), Jamai Loman (Marius), Céline Purcell (Éponine), Freek Bartels (Enjolras), Gerben Grimmius (u/s Thénardier), Marjolein Algera (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Complete show, Amateur capture A, Double dvd Les Misérables - Fifth National Tour - October 5, 2018 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Nick Cartell (Jean Valjean), Josh Davis (Javert), Mary Kate Moore (Fantine), Jillian Butler (Cosette), Joshua Grosso (Marius), Paige Smallwood (Éponine), Matt Shingledecker (Enjolras), J Anthony Crane (Thénardier), Allison Guinn (Madame Thénardier), Sam Middleton (Gavroche), Cate Elefante (u/s Little Cosette), Matt Moisey (Grantaire), Monte J Howell (Combeferre), Tim Quartier (s/w Feuilly), Christopher Viljoen (Courfeyrac), Patrick Rooney (Jean Prouvaire), Gabriel Sidney Brown (Joly), Andrew Maughan (Lesgles), Felipe Barbosa Bombonato (Babet), John Ambrosino (Claquesous), Steve Czarnecki (Factory Foreman), Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Factory Girl), John Ambrosino (Bamatabois) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - November 11, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Victor Hawks (u/s Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Aaron Lazar (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche), Drew Sarich (Grantaire) NOTES: A nice capture here of Victor as Valjean. The capture is a little on the dark side, but still enjoyable. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - February 17, 2007 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Drew Sarich (u/s Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche) NOTES: A really nice video of the first broadway revival. Widescreen. Cleaned up nicely in remastering. And it has Sarich. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - May 12, 2007 (Matinee) (jstarz's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Drew Sarich (u/s Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Mandy Bruno (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier), Stephen Trafton (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Filmed in widescreen (though encoded in 4:3, so there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen), this is a nice capture of some of the new cast members. Drew and Ann give great performances in their roles. The second disc also includes the first 15 minutes of the February 24, 2007 Evening show, filmed from the rear right orchestra. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - June 1, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Ben Davis (Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Marissa McGowan (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - August 24, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Drew Sarich (Jean Valjean), Robert Hunt (Javert), Nikki Renée Daniels (u/s Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Megan McGinnis (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Chip Zien (Thénardier), Becca Ayers (u/s Madame Thénardier), Brian D'Addario (Gavroche) NOTES: Some nice closeups/mediums. A nice capture of the new cast. Capture can be dark at times, but mostly in the darker scenes. Includes a technical difficulty when the Barricades first come out, the show is stopped and includes the announcement.. A- Les Misérables - Fourth UK & Ireland Tour - January, 2019 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Killian Donnelly (Jean Valjean), Nic Greenshields (Javert), Katie Hall (Fantine), Bronwen Hanson (Cosette), Harry Apps (Marius), Tegan Bannister (Éponine), Will Richardson (Enjolras), Martin Ball (Thénardier), Sophie-Louise Dann (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - Hollywood Bowl - August 9, 2008 FORMAT:  WMV (HD) CAST: J Mark McVey (Jean Valjean), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Javert), Melora Hardin (Fantine), Michele Maika (Cosette), John Lloyd Young (Marius), Lea Michele (Éponine), Tom Lowe (Enjolras), Sage Ryan (Gavroche) NOTES: J. Mark McVey, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Michele, Melora Hardin, John Lloyd Young, Michele Maika, Michael McCormick, Tom Lowe, Ruth Williamson. This is 100% NOT Louise Pitre playing Fantine Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - March 1, 2014 (Preview) (Highlights) (where is your red schaaaf's master) FORMAT:  MOV (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), Will Swenson (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Gaten Matarazzo (Gavroche) NOTES: First preview. It includes most of the show. Loud excited audience. Blind shot from stage right third row, with no zooms. Keala Settle sprained her ankle at some point between The Robbery and One Day More, resulting in her not being in One Day More and using a cane during Wedding Chorale/Beggars at the Feast. It’s refreshing to see different faces in the lead roles, and both Nathaniel and Earl carry the show well. Nathaniel’s vocals are powerful and he has a great rapport with Caissie and Samantha. A lovely capture overall with no obstruction. Look Down is mostly blacked out and there are a couple quick dropouts during The Bishop scene and Lovely Ladies, but the show is otherwise fully intact. There is also some washout in high contrast wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. First time in history two same productions of a major musical played in the same city. Les Misérables - West End - May 9, 1987 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Martin Smith (u/s Jean Valjean), Clive Carter (Javert), Kathleen Rowe McAllen (Fantine), Jacinta Mulcahy (Cosette), Maurice Clarke (u/s Marius), Jayne Draper (Éponine), Martin George (Enjolras), David Delve (Thénardier), Myra Sand (Madame Thénardier), Cameron Stewart (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Commonly mistaken as December 28, 1988! Martin Smith was part of the West End cast for 6 months starting December 1986, and the non-circulated first-generation DVD labels the date as 1987/05/09. Les Misérables - West End - December 28, 1991 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stig Rossen (Jean Valjean), Paul Leonard (Javert), Jenna Russell (Fantine), Sarah Jane Hassell (Cosette), Daryll Winslow (Marius), Meredith Braun (Éponine), Mike Sterling (u/s Enjolras), David Hampshire (u/s The Bishop), Amanda Dainty (u/s Factory Girl) NOTES: Black and white. Audio is nice and clear. A more rare color version does exist. (Proof: https://youtu.be/KI_KHnLwk_k) Les Misérables - West End - May 6, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tim Godwin (u/s Jean Valjean), Cornell John (Javert), Kerry Ellis (Fantine), Julia Möller (Cosette), Hayden Tee (Marius), AJ Callaghan (u/s Éponine), Nolan Dark (u/s Enjolras), Barry James (Thénardier), Tracie Bennett (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Taper’s comments: Amanda and Nolan are better than the principles and Tim sounds uncannily like JOJ (Home Counties accent not-withstanding). He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. An audience of 60 million people, 42 countries, 22 languages, 96 international awards, 30 years of worldwide performances, 125 thousand audience members for a live performance in Sydney in 1989. These are just some of the record numbers for Les Miserables, one of the longest-running stage musicals, based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. After the initial success of the original production in Paris, the musical came to the attention of producer Cameron Mackintosh, who decided to make an English-language version. It has been running continuously since 1985 in the West End in London while on Broadway it won 8 Tony Awards and ran from 1987 to 2003 and then again from 2006 to 2008. Telegraph: BBC's Les Miserables adaptation set for frosty reception from musical stars angry at writer's 'moronic' criticism of the hit show
It is arguably the jewel in the crown of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year television offering, with thousands of people across the country excited to see the glamorous, high-budget adaptation of Les Miserables as it premieres tonight.
However, one group of people who are not impressed by the series are those who acted in the musical productions of the tale in the West End after the screenwriter made disparaging comments about the musical.
Andrew Davies wrote in The Telegraph last week that his adaptation, based on the book, “will rescue Victor Hugo’s novel from the clutches of that awful musical with its doggerel lyrics.”
This proclamation received a frosty reception from those who had acted in the musical, which brought the work to mainstream attention.
Dean Chisnall, who currently plays Jean Valjean at Queen’s Theatre in London, said the screenwriter was a “moron”, tweeting: “Andrew Davies: ‘I’m rescuing it from that awful musical’.  I WAS looking forward to watching this. MORON.
“What a tremendous way to lose half your audience.  It’s only been seen by 70 million people. ⁦@lesmisofficial⁩ can’t be that ‘awful’.”
Nancy Sullivan, who played Eponine in the same theatre from 2008-2010 agreed, writing: “Without the success of @lesmisofficial musical very unlikely the opportunity would’ve arisen to write the tv version.”
Another Eponone, Eva Noblezada, who performed the West End role in 2016, tweeted: “Well, I had a GREAT A-- time doing this FUN A-- musical and can speak for the millions who think it’s amazing.
“Lol. Merry Christmas Grinch.
“And I’m still gonna watch it cause it looks fierce.”
Scores of fans have also vowed to boycott the show after the stars of the musical spoke of their anger. It remains to be seen whether the BBC’s production will change their minds.
Davies’ adaptation contains little to no music and is based on the 1,231 page book, which many viewers will not have read.
The series stars The Affair actor Dominic West as prisoner Jean Valjean while David Oyelowo plays police inspector Javert, who is pursuing him.
West has also said that he hopes the production brings viewers back to the source material rather than reminding them of the musical.
He said: "It's been a real inspiration and total joy to bring this masterpiece to dramatic life, and if our portrayal brings people back to the book then that is a great thing.
"Andrew Davies is a master of condensing and distillation. He has distilled a massive book into six hours of television. He's been at it a long time. "He's so experienced. Whenever I've opened a book and thought, 'oh this is a bit I particularly like', it's in his script. In that way, it's very exciting because I don't remember the last time when a book was dealt with in such detail."
The show also stars Olivia Colman, Ellie Bamber, Josh O'Connor and Adeel Akhtar.

BACKGROUND
Birthplace: London Hometown: Wiltshire, England Social Class: Middle, formerly upper Educational achievements: Graduated secondary school with honors Father:  Brian McKinnon was a smalltime character actor and BBC show runner infamous for his divisive, often politically incorrect dark comedies. Although his personality found popularity within the small niche of cynics and unsuccessful satirists, having his wife’s career overshadow his own tore away at his insecruties. These frustrations were never explicitly expressed, but glimmers of his envy more often than not took form through the mean-spirited “jokes” and the occasional arguments he subjected his wife and child to. He passed away in 2008 after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He once claimed that his biggest dream was to play James Bond. Up until his death, this statement was believed to be part of his comedy routine. It was not. By her mid-to late thirties, her career made a breakthrough in Hollywood, where she gained international renown for her grace, beauty, and intelligence. However, the poise she carried herself with did not translate as well off-camera, as she was subject to bouts of deep melancholy, stemming from an allegedly troubled childhood, a dissatisfaction with her marriage and her later estrangement from her daughter, and a family history of mental illness. She took the world by surprise when she took her own life at the young age of 45. Today, her performance as Ophelia in a 1991 production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet is considered legendary. New article:
"Everything you need to know about ‘Cabaret’ in London"
by London Theatre Guide, November 5, 2021
Updated 09/11/2021
"Welcome to the Kit Kat Club. An ever-changing world where artists roam free and nothing is off limits. For the first time, audiences can step inside the Kit Kat Club at a newly-reconfigured Playhouse Theatre to experience Cabaret like never before.
The Cabaret musical is often considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. Now Cabaret will have a new lease of life, with stars Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley leading the charge.
Here’s our complete guide to the West End production of Cabaret. Cabaret tickets are available on LondonTheatre.co.uk.
What is Cabaret about?
Nowhere celebrates the Jazz Age quite like the Kit Kat Club. The Kit Kat Club isn’t just a building though, it’s a hedonistic paradise; being at the Kit Kat Club really is a state of mind. American writer Cliff Bradshaw meets English cabaret singer Sally Bowles at the club. Nothing is easy for these dreamers though, especially when the rise of Nazism threatens their lifestyle. Typically, Cabaret is set in Weimar Germany. For this revival, Cabaret will be set in an immersive world where artists are celebrating the end of days.
When did Cabaret premiere?
"Cabaret"  premiered on 20 Nov. 1966 at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre. The original cast starred Joel Grey as the Emcee, who won a Tony Award for the role. Cabaret on Broadway ran for 1,186 performances.
Two years later, the Kit Kat Club came to the West End, as Cabaret transferred to the Palace Theatre. Judi Dench played Sally Bowles in the original Cabaret London musical, but it didn’t find its feet like on Broadway, only playing for 336 performances.
Over the years, there have been numerous award-winning Cabaret revivals in London. Gillian Lynne (who is honoured in the naming of the Gillian Lynne Theatre) directed and choreographed Cabaret in 1986. Then in 1993, Sam Mendes directed Cabaret at the Donmar Warehouse, starring Alan Cumming as the Emcee, Jane Horrocks as Sally and Adam Godley as Cliff.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and so far there’s been two more Cabaret London revivals. Cabaret ran at the Lyric Theatre from 2006 to 2008. The same production returned to the West End in 2012 with a short revival at the Savoy Theatre.
Tumblr media
Who wrote Cabaret?
The Cabaret musical is based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel, Goodbye to Berlin. Isherwood's semi-autobiographical book charts his time in Berlin from 1929 to 1932, during the Weimar Republic era. After the war, Goodbye to Berlin was adapted for the stage by John Van Druten. The new stage play, I Am a Camera, premiered on Broadway in 1951 and ran for eight months.
A decade afer I Am a Camera, work on the Cabaret musical began. Led by Harold Prince, who eventually went on to direct the musical, he hired Joe Masteroff to write the Cabaret book, with John Kander and Fred Ebb penning the music and lyrics respectively.
Joe Masteroff was a Tony Award-winning writer. As well as creating the Cabaret story, Masteroff also wrote the book for She Loves Me and 70, Girls, 70. John Kander and Fred Ebb were a prolific songwriting team. They worked together on musicals for 50 years, and their notable works alongside Cabaret include Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Scottsboro Boys"
Who is in the Cabaret cast?
Eddie Redmayne makes his West End musical debut as the Emcee in Cabaret. The Olivier Award-winning star has been in London plays including Red and The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?, but now he’ll be singing “Willkommen” at the Kit Kat Club. Redmayne is no stranger to musicals though — he played Marius in the Les Miserables film adaptation.
Jessie Buckley will play Sally Bowles in Cabaret. She’s returning to the West End for the first time in six years, previously appearing in plays such as Henry V and The Winter’s Tale. Now she’ll be singing “Maybe This Time” in the upcoming Cabaret revival.
The Cabaret cast stars Omari Douglas as Cliff Bradshaw, Liza Sadovy as Fraulein Schneider, Elliot Levey as Herr Schultz, Stewart Clarke as Ernst Ludwig, Anna-Jane Casey as Fraulein Kost.
The Cabaret cast is completed by Josh Andrews, Emily Benjamin, Sally Frith, Matthew Gent, Emma Louise Jones, Ela Lisondra, Theo Maddix, Chris O’Mara, Daniel Perry, Andre Refig, Christopher Tendai, Bethany Terry, Lillie-Pearl Wildman and Sophie Maria Wojna.
What is the Prologue Company in Cabaret?
As well as the Cabaret musical, a pre-show performance will be led by the Prologue Company, further inviting audiences into the Kit Kat Club. The Prologue Company will be entertaining theatregoers through song, dance and live music before the Cabaret musical begins. Full details about the Prologue Company’s involvement in Cabaret will be revealed at a later date.
The Prologue company is completed by Gabriela Bendetti, Rachel Benson, Laura Braid, Julian Capolei, Hollie Cassar, Celine Fortenbacher-Popławska, Samantha Ho, Andrew Linnie and Sally Swanson with an original score composed by Angus MacRae.
Pre-show entertainment running time is currently unknown.
Tumblr media
Who is directing Cabaret?
Rebecca Frecknall will direct Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Frecknall is currently associate director at the Almeida Theatre, and has directed Three Sisters and The Duchess of Malfi for the West End venue.
What theatre in London is Cabaret playing at?
Cabaret will play at the Kit Kat Club, which is the new name for the renovated Playhouse Theatre while Cabaret is open. The Playhouse Theatre has been redesigned to accommodate for a flexible performance space, with previous shows such as The Jungle having audiences sit on multiple sides of the stage.
Is the Kit Kat Club the Playhouse Theatre?
Yes. The Kit Kat Club is the name for the reconfigured Playhouse Theatre. The new name will remain throughout Cabaret’s entire run. For Cabaret performances at the Kit Kat Club, the theatre has been renovated to accommodate seating on two sides of the stage, allowing for in-the-round performances. Find out more about the Kit Kat Club here.
Tumblr media
What is the running time of Cabaret?
The Cabaret running time is currently unknown.
What are the songs in Cabaret?

After that, the show is fully captured with no blackouts. There is some minor head obstruction on the left, but it really only affects a few seconds of the show when Valjean cuts Javert loose after The First Attack. There is also a little more washout than in most of my videos, especially in the full stage shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent.
