The Chosen One
9.30 am - Rainy Sunday !!! I woke up heavy headed and my cell phone rang. Phone was from unknown number ; I disconnected it with reluctance. From the kitchen was able to hear heavy mixer sound and my baby shouting was giving it a DJ Effect.
I went to the mirror to see and recognize , “Its me , Young again !!” . Its 12 years since I finished college and have those habits which college days gave me. I smiled running my fingers through my hair. Ahh !! Could see some white hair now but was still happy to see me as before. My attention broke when my wife yelled at me , “You are getting older and not young anymore !! Stop staring into the mirror for God’s sake” , I smiled at her ; she smiled back. I felt happy. We developed this habit of returning smiles in first month of our marriage , time when spoke less.
I picked up the brush ; “Tring Tring” .. My cell phone rang again. I kept the brush down and went to answer the phone. It was the same Unknown number again. With curiosity I received the call . An  unfamiliar voice greeted me at the other end. It was an absolving female voice . She asked with a humble note , “Amu , How are you my sweetheart ?” My hands started shivering ; did a double check on my wife ; She was with my kid busy feeding him the food. I went inside my room and was silent. Sweetheart?? Did I hear it right?
Sweetheart , Its me , how can you forget me ?.. Voice from other side came. “ Sorry Madam , Do i know you in person ? “ I reverted. She smiled and said. “ Relax Amu !!! Its me Munni.. was just pulling your leg”. “Munni.. Its you!!”, Heavy relief flooded me and I smiled. “Its long time where have you been”.
“We have shifted to kerala post my fathers posting and lost all contact with you. Today I called you to say , I came 2nd in state in 10th Exam and what I am today is all because of your words”.
A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
Munni was chattering with confidence , I was elated to hear every word from her. Yes it was the same little girl who was living in my colony 15 years ago.
This little girl must be in 3rd or 4th standard;  was crying sitting on bench. I asked her what happened “Munni , why are you crying bachhe ?” She said tomorrow is the exam day and I am not prepared with all lessons , Its history paper ; which I hate the most. My father objurgated at me , “Its a tough comepttion and you need to score 100 at least in 4 subjects so I am scared”
Munni’s father was an IITIAN and was a very ambitious man having great expectations from this little girl. I sat beside her and told let me tell you a story to relax your mind.
I started my narration and Munni was paying attention to me like a obedient child.
I was in my 3rd standard , same age as of you. Next day was history paper , I looked at clock it was around 11 pm and was not prepared with all lessons of history. My grandfather was giving me a company reading novel , “Mahanayak - Autobiography of Subash Chandra Bose”. I was yawning , seeing that Grandpa said , “Wash your face and come”. Looking at him, I asked him with saddened note;  Aajoba , I am not prepared for exams , 4 lessons are still pending. I am too much scared.
My Grandpa said , Exams is duck soup activity for you why are you scared young man. See I am reading a chapter of Subhash chandra bose giving speech to Azad Hind Sena , Is writing exams bigger than fighting for nation. My Grandpa was a freedom fighter and his words were always inspiring to me.
He further said , Dont worry , Go to sleep everything will be all right !!
I went to sleep and woke up for paper and started summarizing what i read the whole day yesterday.
I heard a school bus horn , went to Grandpa with question in my eyes , Understanding me , He said “ Don’t worry Son , It will be all right “
Paper started , I got a seat near the window .Cool breeze blew on my face. I was praying paper should not be difficult however Grandpa’s words was giving me peace.
Supervisor distributed papers , I was shocked !! I was aware of each and every question in paper. There was nothing which i had not read or studied before. Luckily nothing was asked from chapters which i skipped. I was elated and was jumping inside. I looked outside window for a minute and a man exactly same looking as my grandpa was smiling at me. Is it a God’s signal or Special gift to me ?
I finished paper with solving all questions with best of my ability and came home.
Grandpa was reading the same novel , I went and hugged him. He said looking at my eyes
“Looks like history paper went good” , I reverted with surprised tone , You are a magician how you guessed yesterday everything will be all right and he said “It’s because , “You are the chosen one , Nothing Bad can happen to you”
I looked at him with a hairbrained face , How can can you say that , I asked.  He said , “You are God’s favourite child and he will support you”. I smiled and got answers to war zone questions disturbing my mind.
So I said to Munni , We worry for small things but give less attention to our great efforts for our dreams.
Nothing can deviate us if we have positivity inside us. Don’t worry everything will be all right my little friend.
My little child “You are the chosen one and nothing bad will happen to you” , Munni smiled said “ Thank Amu , You are a sweetheart “ and i could see dimples on her little cheeks , I tapped her head and went ahead for a walk.
After so many years , hearing such a great news from her , I looked at my grandpa’s photo on wall and re-iterated , “You are the chosen one, Have a great life ahead”

Jarnail Hari Singh Nalwa
Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle is a patriotic song from the 1967 Bollywood movie - Upkar, which cemented Manoj Kumar's brand as Bharat Kumar. The last para of that song goes like this...
Tumblr media
This stanza eulogizes many well known Indian personalities - Gautam Buddha, Guru Nanak, Gandhiji, Subhash Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Bhagat Singh and Jawaharlal Nehru. Along with such eminent personalities, this song also mentions Hari Singh Nalwa. I hadn't heard about him until recently. I am not sure many people know him very well.
This post is about one of the greatest generals India has ever produced, the commander-in-chief of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Sikh empire and a soldier who sent shivers through enemy ranks, but strangely whose name got lost in the annals of history - Jarnail Hari Singh Nalwa.
Tumblr media
This fercious-looking man was born in Gujranwala, a city currently in Pakistan, famous for wrestling. His forefathers were officers in the Sikh army. But he lost his father when he was a kid.
In 1804, when he was in his teens, he was spotted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in an annual talent hunt-cum- sporting event, where Hari Singh excelled in horse riding, sword fighting, wrestling and many competitive sports. He was inducted as one of Ranjit Singh's personal bodyguards.
One day, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his retinue went to the jungle for hunting. Out of the blue, a tiger attacked Hari Singh and killed his horse. Declining help from others, Hari Singh is supposed to have single-handedly fought the tiger and killed it. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was so impressed that Hari Singh was given the titles Baagmaar (tiger-killer) and Nalwa (one with tiger-like-claws).
Tumblr media
He was also recognized as a Sardaar and from here on he rose meteorically in Ranjit Singh's army to become his commander-in-chief, General, also called Jarnail.
Though he participated, planned or led dozens of battles, his most ferocious opponents were the Afghans. For centuries, Afghans would attack, loot, rape and plunder India.
Tumblr media
They would enter India through the Kyber pass.
Tumblr media
Hari Singh Nalwa took the Afghans on in the famed Battle of Jamrud in 1836, conclusively drove them away, and build a fort in Jamrud to ensure Khyber Pass was sealed for ever.
Tumblr media
It is said that the Afghans weren't scared of the Brits, the Russians or the Americans - the three superpowers who tried to control them, but they were shit scared of Hari Singh Nalwa. It is also said that Afghan mothers used to threaten pesky kids that if they didn't mind their manners, Hari Singh Nalwa would come down to teach them a lesson. This is hard to believe, but harder still not to believe!
During his time, this is how big the Sikh empire became. He was, at various times, the Governor of Kashmir, Peshawar and Hazara.
Tumblr media
He was also considered an able administrator. Maharaja Ranjit Singh had so much trust and faith in him as a loyal administrator that he allowed Hari Singh Nalwa to mint coins in his name.
Tumblr media
Hari Singh Nalwa was also a town planner and architect. One of the towns founded by him is Haripur, which is still extant in Pakistan.
Tumblr media
The story of his death is an unbelievable tale. In 1837, Dost Mohammed Khan, another Afghan, attacked Peshawar with a vast army. Though Hari Singh Nalwa was down with fever and camping elsewhere, he left for Peshawar immediately, sending request to Ranjit Singh for urgent reinforcements.
In Peshawar, he was fatally wounded and died. Before dying, he ordered his faithful lieutenants not to tell any one that he was dying. In order to boost the morale of his troops, he walked to the rampart of the fort so that enemy could see him and died standing in that posture.
Tumblr media
The sight of Hari Singh Nalwa sent shivers down the Afghans. They waited one week before they realised he was dead. By that time, reinforcements had arrived. Hari Singh Nalwa lived a glorious life and died a glorious death.

BACK TO SCHOOL-II
My journey with Little Angels’ School had ended. And it was time to choose a new path. For any parent, maybe this is one of the most challenging decisions-which school to put your child in. There is little scope of error. So, they had to take in several opinions. I had briefed them about my friends’ decision. And it was obvious that I wanted to be at a place with familiar faces.
But getting into any school is not a cakewalk. One needs to prove himself/herself worthy of studying there. The knowledge and skill level of each aspiring student was tested by an Entrance test. This is a common practice in every educational institutions, more competitive these days. So, I was made to appear for the entrance test. Not one, but about three, for various schools. After a few days, when I asked them about the results, I was just told, “Fine!” My family doesn’t like to discuss my good results. Not because they don’t like to praise me, but they do so remind me of the fact that no matter what your results are, you have to keep on working, regardless of praise or criticism, good or bad. I didn’t get it at that time, but over the years, by some experience,I understood the message that was being conveyed. This was to be taught later at school also…
So, it was final now. Stewart School was going to be my new destination. And “Stewartonian” was going to be my new identity. Established in 1882 by Dr. William Day Stewart,Stewart School, Cuttack is one of the oldest schools in the state of Odisha, and also the eldest among the four Stewart Schools in the state. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who was born and brought up in Cuttack, was also an alumnus of this school.
But I was unaware of all this. I was just relying on my slight confidence and experience of what a school is. On top of that, when your parents assure you by saying , “Come on, you are a grown-up now”, tears which are just about to roll down your cheeks, suddenly retrace their way back into the eyes. Now that the bombshell was dropped, you don’t have an option.
Blue shirt, grey shorts, navy blue tie, grey socks and black shoes, this was my uniform now. My prized possessions for my entire lifetime. Throughout my journey at Stewart School, I was made to inculcate the habit of taking care of my uniform, and ensuring that was tidy. This habit I had developed and always stuck to it. I had also sometimes avoided my games period in order to keep it spick and span. On the last day of my school, when all were busy getting their shirts signed by my dear teachers, I preferred a notebook, reason being the same!!
The first day, my first steps into my new school, all crystal clear images afresh in my mind. The first person I met, was a well-built tall person, in a yellow uniform. Our security uncle, smiling, and wishing all, “Good Morning!” It is aptly said that if you see a smiling face, you feel a sense of optimism and a sense of comfort throughout the day. Though I shyly walked away from uncle, but that seemed to be a wonderful welcome for me at my new school.
An entirely new concept awaited me here. Unlike my previous school, the students here were divided into four sections-A,B,C and D. On the first day of the new session, one had to dash in through the crowd to find out which section one was in. And I had joined in mid-session, so I was the lone person, standing with Mummy, trying to find my section from my officials. After sometime, I was told that I was assigned section I-’B’. As I was walking through the school campus, holding Mummy’s hand and wandering about the significance of these English alphabets here, I reached my new classroom. My new class teacher, after a brief conversation with Mummy, smiled and let me in. She introduced me to my new friends of I-’B’. I had got my new friends, had they also?
I was made to sit beside a girl, on the second row. Shy I was, I didn’t dare to ask her name. But during the recess, when I was trying to open my tiffin box, it seemed as if Mummy had put in her entire might in closing it. My new friend, just smiled, asked for the box, and opened it easily. We then, had a chat and introduced ourselves ad this was how I had my first friend here.
There were several new, interesting concepts here. One of them was the concept of a class monitor. I found that after our class teacher, the monitor was the second-in-command. Walking around the class at free will, with a ruler in hand, after our class teacher, the monitor had the power to punish anyone. This was interesting… On enquiring more, I got to know that a class monitor is appointed by the class teacher for helping her in maintaining discipline in the class. Also, a class monitor has the responsibility of helping the class teacher in all her work. After knowing all this, somehow, I felt the urge to get this post. I wanted to be a class monitor. But just saying doesn’t do the job.
One more interesting thing here was the annual class decoration competition. By now, it had been well established in my class that I could be trusted with anything in the world but drawing. And this annual class decoration competition was just about that. Each student had to make a beautiful chart paper presentation on a pre-decided theme and it was to be pasted on the walls of the classroom. The best class received an award from Principal Ma’m at a special function. We were all asked to prepare charts. I was in a fix what to do, when again, Mummy came to my rescue. Mummy had an artistic hand, and she loves painting. She took up this mammoth task of creating the chart paper presentation. Tell me anything except drawing and I would be ready for it. For the class decoration, all of us contributed small amounts to buy a table cloth and a pen stand, which would add to the magnificence of a teacher’s table. That year my section received the second prize…
Few people at that time knew that I was a singer. It was two years then when I was having my music lessons. But those who knew insisted that I should participate in the annual function. One of those, even secretly gave my name to the cultural department. When I was called from the class for the auditions, I was visibly surprised. I was asked to sing the prayer song which we song everyday before our class begins. After hearing just a single line, our music teacher said, “Great! You are selected!”
Annual functions is perhaps the most awaited day for any school student. The entire mood of the school changes a month before. Hustle and bustle all over, students and teachers busy preparing for the various cultural activities, it is the dream of almost every school student to feature in the annual function of one’s school. And I had got the opportunity from the very first year itself!! I don’t remember a single year as a Stewartonian, when I was not a part of the annual function. This was fun. You make several new friends in the process, and get the blessings of several teachers too.. The first year, dressed in a green, frilled shirt, I remember singing the song, “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands,…”. The clap that follows your performance is just so pleasing. Perhaps some of the best memories during those ten years were due the annual days only.
In all this fun and excitement, I always ensured that I followed each and every word of my teacher to the best of my ability. Perhaps that earned me the title of ,”Most disciplined child”. No matter what, I have always tried to stick to this principle of mine till date.
My journey as a Stewartonian began wonderfully. Let’s see what comes next…

The Kolkata Airport Fire Incident: Ensuring Safety and Preparedness in Airline Storage Areas
Introduction: In a bustling airport like Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, safety and security are paramount. However, accidents can still occur, as witnessed recently when a fire broke out in a room used by an airline to store stationary. This incident highlights the importance of stringent safety measures, emergency preparedness, and continuous vigilance within airport facilities. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of the incident, its potential causes, and the lessons that can be learned to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Incident: On [Date], a fire erupted in a storage room located within the Kolkata airport premises. This room was used by an airline to store stationary supplies such as paper, pens, and other office materials. The flames quickly engulfed the room, causing panic among airport staff and passengers. Fortunately, due to the swift response of the airport’s fire safety team and the presence of adequate fire suppression systems, the fire was brought under control, and no casualties were reported. However, the incident serves as a wake-up call for the aviation industry to reevaluate safety protocols within airline storage areas.
Potential Causes and Lessons Learned:
Electrical Malfunction: Electrical malfunctions are a common cause of fires in commercial buildings. It is essential for airlines and airport authorities to conduct regular inspections of electrical systems, ensuring they meet safety standards and are free from potential hazards.
Proper Storage Practices: Storing flammable materials, such as paper, in close proximity to heat sources or electrical equipment can increase the risk of fire. Airlines and airport management must adhere to strict guidelines on proper storage practices, including maintaining adequate distance between flammable materials and potential ignition sources.
Fire Suppression Systems: The effectiveness of fire suppression systems cannot be overstated. Regular maintenance and testing of these systems are essential to ensure they are in proper working order. Additionally, investing in advanced fire detection systems can provide early warnings, enabling a quick response and containment of fires.
Employee Training: Employees working in airline storage areas should receive comprehensive fire safety training. This includes knowledge of evacuation procedures, proper handling of fire extinguishers, and awareness of potential fire hazards. Regular drills and refresher training sessions should be conducted to ensure preparedness.
Collaboration and Communication: Effective communication and coordination among airport staff, airlines, and emergency responders are critical during emergency situations. Clear lines of communication and well-defined emergency response protocols can minimize confusion and enhance the speed and efficiency of emergency response efforts.
The fire incident at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport emphasizes the need for unwavering commitment to safety in all areas of airport operations. By implementing rigorous safety protocols, conducting regular inspections, and investing in advanced fire detection and suppression systems, the risk of fire incidents can be minimized. Continuous employee training, collaboration, and effective communication are key to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all stakeholders. It is the collective responsibility of airlines, airport authorities, and regulatory bodies to ensure the highest standards of safety are upheld, making air travel a secure and reliable mode of transportation for passengers and personnel alike.

Akhnoor: Addressing a rally in Akhnoor on the outskirts of Jammu, his first in the condition just after national elections have been introduced on March 10, Primary Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday claimed that the speeches of Congress leaders ended up getting applause in Pakistan. The Congress is blinded by its “anti-Modi approach” and has stopped pondering in the nation’s curiosity, Modi claimed, increasing troubles of national protection and terrorism and questioning the Congress party’s statements subsequent the Balakot airstrike. The prime minister commenced his speech by greeting persons in the local Dogri language and went on to exhort them to vote for his party’s Jammu-Poonch prospect, Jugal Kishore. When India executed the air strike in Balakot on February 27, Congress leaders came out with statements which ended up not in favour of the region, he explained. “Is it the exact Sardar Patel’s Congress who used working day and evening for the unity and integrity of the nation? I fail to recognize if this is the Congress social gathering of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose who saw the desire of an unbiased India,” the PM claimed. “What do you think?” he asked the people, who replied that they agreed with the PM’s perspective. “The full nation and its citizen are talking in 1 voice but the Congressmen are speaking a various language,” Modi reported. A lesson from Myanmar: Why India can't be the victim of West’s idea of 'human right politics'
![CDATA[
It happened to me for the second time. The realisation occurred slowly but it embraced me fully. Last time around when I went to South Africa with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2013 to cover BRICS summit, my excitement was shooting through the roof. The journey had given me an opportunity to see, smell and feel places associated with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. My excitement knew no bounds.   I must have marvelled 100 times on board the special plane as to how would I feel at the station where Gandhi was thrown out of the train onto the pavement because of the colour of his skin. I was excited about going to the ashram in Durban. I also had the repressed feeling of meeting grateful black men and women with a thanking smile plastered on their faces. I also felt that as an Indian, I would be able to renew a historical association at an individual level as reportage was slowly turning into a pilgrimage.   The excitement which I was barely able to contain ebbed away within minutes me stepping out of the car and getting inside the station. It was empty. It remained empty. It dawned on me that this place was no marker of anything politically significant in contemporary South Africa.   The Gandhi South Africa narrative which I read in books didn’t exist when interacted with people. Four years down the line African universities went through the wave of protest against Gandhi on grounds of being racist.   In Myanmar, I was stuck with a similar feeling about cultural connections and shared the colonial experience but again, the opposite awaited me. Within 24 hours of landing, the imagery of the famous song from the film Patanga, released in 1949 and sung by C Ravichandran and Shamshad Begum, Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon Wahan Se Kiya Hai Telephone (My lover has gone to Rangoon and has called me from there), vanished from my head.
Till date, Myanmar’s government has not acknowledged the official headquarters of the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  ×
Till date, Myanmar’s government has not acknowledged the official headquarters of the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. In the past, the government has razed down a couple of quarter he lived in. Locals told me that the place where Rabindranath Tagore stayed is not in a good condition either. Despite the cultural connect, a disconnect is evident. The same can be said of Nepal where we share the religion.   All of this brings me to one conclusion that relationship between nations needs to be watered regularly which is based on active and current needs.   The lesson that I drew from this experience is that, what one considers to be important is not necessarily done so by the other country. I also realised that nation-states always recreate their own histories where they keep themselves at the centre, whereas view from outside remains marginal or tangential.   Why should an average Myanmaris feel strongly about Bal Gangadhar Tilak being imprisoned in Mandalay for 6 years? Indian political establishment must realise that there is a limit to the politics of connecting as hard-nosed diplomacy works better than connects.
PM Modi’s decision to not to mention Rohingya or de-hyphenation of Ramallah from Jerusalem will bring much better results than cultural closeness.

PM Modi’s decision to not to mention Rohingya or de-hyphenation of Ramallah from Jerusalem will bring much better results than cultural closeness.  Political use of India's cultural history, in my opinion, should be a move targetted at the domestic audience which feels elated at the sense of Indian contribution to the world.
But there is no alternative to quid pro quo.    Whether it is Nepal, Sri Lanka or Myanmar what works in a diplomatic relationship is what I can take and what you can give me. The moralist may say that it divorces morality from the political ambit but I believe that morality must be judged from the consequence of a political action and shouldn’t become the sole axis on which diplomacy be conducted.
The current curve in the Indian diplomacy must continue to dominate lest we ourselves become the victims of West’s idea of “human right politics” and our bloated sense of cultural contribution which to me is deep nostalgia because the world is not interested in it.
