A pen cut from a reed has been used since the beginning of writing. But reeds only grow so big. What to do when you need a larger writing tool? The Jali (Celi) or Tomar Qalam is mostly known to calligraphers who work in Arabic, Persian or Urdu calligraphy, but the pens can be used for many other scripts and lettering styles. The pens are handmade from a sharpened nib of hardwood. The cuts and drilled holes serve as ink reservoirs. Allow me to give a shout out to Josh Berer at https://arabiccalligraphysupplies.com/ who made this beautiful set of pens with the nice hand-turned wood handles. I will say that using these tools is tricky, but with practice you can get nice crisp calligraphic lettering. So thrilled about how many of you out there are using letteringmaker.com, and to see that many of you find it useful! I handpicked a few of them (featured here @_c_o_n_t_o, @raymawst, @fedebiagioli, @tcastiglionidg, @andre.letters, @roninmorel). In case you don't know about it, the lettering maker is essentially a brief generator for your lettering piece, that allows you to have a starting point for your drawing, while encouraging you to try new, unexplored styles and shapes. Head to www.letteringmaker.com to check it out. This is how to use it:⠀ ⠀ 1- Create your brief: Choose a complexity level BEGINNER, ADVANCED and PRO. You’ll get a series of specifications to draw (like how heavy your letters should be, how wide, etc) including a text, so no time go into thinking what to draw. The complexity and length of the text is related to the difficulty level as well. As you move up on to the next levels, you’ll get more specifications to deal with, like an application (book cover, poster, etc.), and audience (kids, millenials, LGBT+ Community, etc.), a color scheme and more!⠀ ⠀ 2- Set up a deadline: I find this point essential. Commit to have it done in two hours, 2 days, 3 weeks. The truth is that it’ll never be finished, there’s always something to improve. You need to know when you’re going to be done, even if it’s not done ;). You can print your brief and with the deadline, too, and even sign on it!⠀ ⠀ 3- Share it!: show your work using #myletteringmaker.⠀ ⠀ I'll be asking for your suggestions to add more texts to letter soon. You may also want to have a look to @homsweethom’s https://wtfshouldiletter.com, a phrase generator that is just 👌🏼 ⠀⠀ #letteringtool #letternerd #letteringeducation #martinaflorteaching #lettering #drawinglettering #drawingletters https://www.instagram.com/p/B8hX50uqCfF/?igshid=1hrded7cc9xqe

Tools⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I always enjoy when other people share the tools they use to make their designs, since you can learn so much from it. So I thought I'd write down what I've learned so far. (Non of this is sponsored).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 My initial set of Tombow dual brush pens was a birthday gift (& a brush lettering course - plz don't look too close at the examples!😌) I love them because they opened up a whole new & colourful world for me. 💙💚💛💜⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They come with a long flexible felt tip on one side and a stiff one on the other side. I initially only used the former to shade elements in my sketchnote and brush lettering. But lately I've discovered the stiff side for faux brush lettering (the "hi" on the right) and for small work (dots specially). .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've had them for over a year now and they still work great. They are easily available, the colours are awesome and you can buy them individually or grab a set if you are starting out (better value for money).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've also followed these tips which probably helped to make them last longer: 1. Turn the pen in your hands after every couple of strokes so the felt tip is used evenly. 2. Don't use it on rough paper or it will deteriorate quickly. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Something else I didn't know when I started was their N.00 pen. It can be used to mix colours, so you don't have to buy every shade under the sun🌄 (in picture 2 I created an orange shade which I didn't have.) .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My only criticism would be that the numbers & text on the pen rub off quickly. I lost my black one and had to repurchase it. You can see the difference between my old and new one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 The Koi Colouring Brush Pen was part of the starter kit at the brush lettering course. I find it works really well. If you only need the flexible felt tip this could also be a great choice. It's also way smaller which might be relevant if you want to carry it around? .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @tombowusa ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #lettering #sketchnotes #letteringtools #sketchnotetools #bruspen #brushpens #tombow #koicoloringbrushpen ⠀

Does anyone know how to prevent this shit from happening? I know altitude changes can affect it but it has happened so often I can't pinpoint what causes it. #letteringtools #micronpens #artistproblems

Ridiculously excited to try this!! (Not an ad) .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was reading the German instructions when I came upon the "writing from bottom to top"?! 😂 Sounded strange enough to check the other languages! .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Well, small mistakes. Nobody is perfect @pilot_pen_deutschland but the pen looks amazing! .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #pen #paralellpen #penporn #lettering #letteringtools

Shadowing tools⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Finding the right light cool gray shade to add shadows to my sketchnotes has been one of my obsessions in 2017. So far I've tried: .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🖍 Copic Ciao⠀@copicmarker ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🖍 Tombow @tombowusa ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🖍 Zebra Mildliner⠀@zebrapen_usa ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've only ever used one side of these pens and my thoughts are:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 Copic makes the most AMAZING cool ❄ gray shades! I love the super subtle C-0 💙 and do use the C-2 when I want to layer shades. The C-5 is too dark for my taste, but I'll probably buy the shades in between. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I believe they will work better for big scale sketchnotes, as the felt tip is big(ish) But you can definitely make it work on smaller ones. Keep a light hand, here the colour bled through 2 sheets of paper! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I tried & bought them in a store. But didn't realize that they go lighter as they dry. I was rather happy about it 😁 But it's something to be aware of. I tried to capture it on a pic, although they dry very quickly.⏳ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 I am in love with the Tombow N.95 💙 N.89 is great too 😘 N 79 is almost brown, so I never use it 👎. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I couldn't test them in the store as they are individually packaged. So it's a bit of a hit and miss. They do however sell sets of warm or cold gray pens. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Great for small sketchnotes as they have a small & pointed felt tip. Wouldn't use them on a wall-sized sketchnote though. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 I bought the Zebra ones online. I expected one side to be a flexible felt tip, but both are stiff 😔 I don't use them much, but I think they can be quite precise. So I can understand why some people love them. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The gray is cool 👍, the yellow is quite fluorescent (I prefer my warm toned Tombow).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #brushpens #sketchnotes #sketchnotetools #tools #pens #sketchnotepens #letteringtools ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
