Calligraphic design of the name Amari. Just so there is no confusion, note that there are a number of names which are transliterated into the exact Romanization. In Arabic script this name is أمارى . The Bouton Passover Haggadah
This magnificent manuscript was created as a specialty commission by illustrator, heraldic painter, engraver and skilled scribe (Sofer Mahir) Victor Bouton. Born in Lorraine in 1819 and active in Paris, Bouton followed the model of Shiraz school of miniature paintings and manuscript decoration when creating this unique Haggadeh. The manuscript features sumptuously rich borders with floral elements, gold and lapis lazuli surrounding the text in Hebrew calligraphy.
The Haggadah is now in the Braginsky Collection (https://braginskycollection.com/portfolio/bouton-haggadah/)

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO ASSIST WITH EARTHQUAKE RELIEF IN TURKEY AND SYRIA
https://help.rescue.org/donate/syria-crisis
There are many organizations accepting donations. Personally I trust the International Rescue Committee to get aid where it is needed through its network of on the ground workers in Syria and Turkey. For a limited time, monthly donations to the IRC will be doubled as they rush support to people in urgent need in winter days and weeks following the devastation of the earthquakes.
The ink painting is from my series "Reaching" -- reaching for compassion and understanding, reaching for justice, reaching out to our fellow humans in need.

So many ways to say I love you. Mehr -- مهر-- is an ancient Persian word. As with many words that are old, the meanings are layered one atop the other. Mehr is love and affection and friendship; Mehr is kindness or to do a kindness; Mehr is mercy and sympathy; Mehr is prosperity and well being. Give yourself some mehr; share some with others. Bask in the divine light of mehr and share it around. Persian calligraphy by S J Thomas Available as a greeting card at https://worldcalligraphy.com

My writing tools, including quills, reed pens (qalam ney), Chinese brushes, sign painting brush and assorted metal nibs (broad nib, copperplate, quill, wire brush, etc.). These are a sampling of the well-used tools of my daily life as a calligrapher. They are displayed on an antique writing desk from India from the time of the British Raj, which features multiple compartments and closes up as a convenient–if somewhat heavy by modern standards–box. It was decades ago, to be honest. A friend and I spotted both the ebony black box at the same moment. It was perched on a high shelf in Doma’s old shop in Mussoorie, India, and we had a friendly argument over who had seen it first. I must say I pushed harder than was my usual habit. Even then I knew that calligraphy was going to be a big part of my life, and who should have the writing box but the calligrapher. It still accompanies me to calligraphy demonstrations and workshops and is only slightly worse for the wear! S J Thomas https://worldcalligraphy.com

Tonight is the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere: Winter Solstice, Yule, Shab-e Yalda. No doubt for as long as humans have been around they have kept the fires burning on these dark nights of the year. Yalda is a Syriac word for birth, and Shab-e Yalda is an ancient Iranian celebration of the longest night. Not just physical darkness surrounds us as, but other forms of darkness as well. And yet, we find that illumination is found even in the depths of shadow. Hannukah, Advent, the miracle of the Christmas Birth, the fires of Yuletide celebrations and the eating of melons and pomegranates--those fruits of the sun--on Shabe-e Yalda are all portents of hope that the sun and the better lights of human expression will edge back into fullness. Illumination is in the depths of shadows -- روشنایی در اعماق سایه هاست  -- Persian calligraphy by S J Thomas.  www.worldcalligraphy.com

The legendary phoenix or simurgh made up of the Arabic words for strength, love, hope, rise, faith and protection: القوة ، الحب ، الأمل ، تنشأ ، الإيمان ، الحماية This type of calligraphy design is often termed a zoomorph, words creating the shape of an animal. Sometimes the words form a tightly bounded shape. In this case I preferred much looser strokes to give the feeling of the bird rising up in ecstatic flight full of strength and hope. A pen cut from a reed has been used since the beginning of writing. But reeds only grow so big. What to do when you need a larger writing tool? The Jali (Celi) or Tomar Qalam is mostly known to calligraphers who work in Arabic, Persian or Urdu calligraphy, but the pens can be used for many other scripts and lettering styles. The pens are handmade from a sharpened nib of hardwood. The cuts and drilled holes serve as ink reservoirs. Allow me to give a shout out to Josh Berer at https://arabiccalligraphysupplies.com/ who made this beautiful set of pens with the nice hand-turned wood handles. I will say that using these tools is tricky, but with practice you can get nice crisp calligraphic lettering. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has provided their support as I've worked to launch my new website.
WorldCalligraphy.com
I should hasten to say that most of you don't even know that you were supporting my new endeavour! You were just being your wonderful selves.
Gratitude is also my antidote to fear and anxiety. I created this calligraphic reflection as part of my Gratitude Collection which features greeting cards in different scripts and languages.
For most of my career as an artist I've concentrated on works commissioned for a specific purpose. I still do art work for clients and welcome your requests.
With over four decades of experience as a calligrapher, I’ve decided to make my fine art and world calligraphy available to a wider audience by introducing a variety of calligraphic products and fine art limited editions.
My specialty is world calligraphy in multiple languages and scripts, in contemporary and historical styles. Calligraphy also informs the rest of my artwork, some of which is also available on this website.
I am introducing greeting cards as the first offering and will be adding wall art, limited editions, apparel and other items.
I invite you to go to my website and sign up for my periodic emails.
You’ll receive early notice of new designs, special offers, and insights into calligraphy, culture and history.

Visit my new website. After years of focusing solely on commission work for clients I am making my work more widely available. Beautifully printed fine art greeting cards on substantial 100# paper feature watercolours or a range of different languages and scripts. Thanks to everyone for their support in getting this project off the ground.
Building the worldcalligraphy.com website, working with several printers to get quality products, dealing with all the technical aspects of shopping carts and payment gateways...I don’t need to go into all the details. Suffice it to say that as an artist I prefer to spend my time creating. So, have a look at the results!
More to come, I promise. The creativity is flowing!
