My Name is Asher Lev

Pieter Toerien presents the acclaimed Jewish play My Name is Asher Lev, a play by Aaron Posner, adapted from the novel by Chaim Potok, directed by Moira Blumenthal and starring Robert Fridjhon, Louise Saint-Claire and Alan Swerdlow.

Asher Lev is a young Jew growing up in Brooklyn in the 1940s. Against the backdrop of this most tumultuous time in history, Asher Lev discovers he is a gifted artist while struggling with a bereaved mother and an absent father. His exceptional artistic talent draws opposition not only from his own strict Hasidic community, which believes art is a waste of time, but also from his parents. Asher is willing to challenge the expectations of his community and the unhappiness of his family but will have to pay a terrible price for the right to use his gift.

Directed and produced mainstream theatre internationally since 1988, including at the Sydney Opera House.

Established and managed The Rosebank Theatre in Johannesburg.

Former producer at the Seymour Theatre Centre.

Spearheaded Jewish theatre, including Via Dolorosa, From Door To Door, Address Unknown, The Chosen, Coming To See Aunt Sophie.

Master of Arts in Cultural and Creative Practice from the University of Western Sydney.

Productions include Two Weeks With The Queen, Collected Stories, Sydney premiere of Skin Tight, Foreign Aids, Elections And Erections, Bombshells, A Woman In Black, Love, Loss And What I Wore.

The play won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and the prestigious John Gassner Award.
