Monströse Lichterfahrten

Wenn ich die dösigen Lichterfahrten der Monstertrecker durch die niederrheinischen Dörfer mit blinkenden Krippenlandschaften auf den Schaufeln sehe, dann nehme ich nur noch lärmende, stinkende und gleißende Emissionen war. Mit Weihnachten und Besinnlichkeit hat das wohl nichts zu tun.  Wenn schon der Wegfall der Steuerbegünstigung für landwirtschaftliche Dieselfahrzeuge die Veranstalter nicht…

Wir wünschen allen ein gesegnetes Weihnachtsfest, Gesundheit und Glück. 🎄🧑‍🎄🚑🚨 Am 17.12.22 war es so weit, nach einigen Stunden Vorbereitung beteiligten wir uns an der Lichterfahrt mit 3 Fahrzeugen. Die Straßen säumten viele Familien mit ihren Kindern, welche, teilweise in Decken gehüllt, in den offenen Kofferräumen der Autos saßen. Einfach ein Dank an alle, welche bei Minusgraden an der Wegstrecke standen. Unsere erste Teilnahme an der Lichterfahrt hat uns sehr viel Freude bereitet. Ein Dank möchten wir der Organisation aussprechen, für ein tolles Erlebnis unter dem Dach der Blaulichtfamilie, mit den Einsatzkräften: > des Servicebetriebs der Stadt Pirmasens, > dem THW, > den SEG’s , > der Feuerwehr Pirmasens, die uns mit Lichterketten unterstützt hatte und > den Kollegen vom ASB. Fish and boats

Do you fancy some crab sandwich for breakfast? Or rather a piece of eel? Me neither, but nonetheless this was the reason for us to get up very early this sunday morning and make our way to the „Fischmarkt“ - the fish market, taking place every sunday morning from 5.30am until lunchtime. It was a huge spectacle and one really has to seen this with one‘s own eyes! It was a mixture between an italian street market, a fish market and an auction. All of it happening at the same time at the harbour promenade. There were sold clothes next to a huge variety of fish and crab sandwiches but also plants, fruit, vegetables and sweets. The most funny thing, for me, however, was the auctions: A man standing on a podium was holding different products into the air - either fruit, sweets, or plants, screaming its price and putting it into a bag afterwards. He would continue like this, adding more and more products to the bag and in the end selling it for a very low price. This doesn‘t sound too spectacular now, and I just realize how hard it is to describe the flair - but the way they did it was just super-entertaining, dropping some jokes now and then. One has to experience this!

After this hurly-burly we made our way to a way calmer area of Hamburg: the Alster lake. The Alster is a side river of the Elbe, which is the river connecting Hamburg with the 120 kilometres far northern sea. The whole area around the alster likes was decorated with beautiful white houses and villas, joggers were running through the park and you did not feel like you were in the middle of a two-million-inhabitant city.

The Sankt Michaelis church has gone through some troubles in the past years and the one standing today is the third version after having been burned down and damaged twice. Although having the choice to take the elevater to the 132 high tower we were probably the only tourists that decided to climb the stairs. The view at the top was definitely worth this small hike!

Before having lunch we made a last stop at another green area of the harbour city: Planten und Blomen, a lovely park in the middle of the city.

The sunny warm weather was the perfect invitation for a walk at the harbour.

Nonetheless, I decided to escape the sun for a bit and to travel back in time, underneath sea level. U-343 is a russian submarine built in 1976 and laying in the harbour of Hamburg open for tourists to visit. With its 90 metres of length but only 8 metres of width it‘s definitely nothing for claustrophobics. I, however, quite interested in history, was very fascinated by the fact that 84 sailors have lived inside it for three and a half months, working at temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees celsius while not even having an own bed but rather sharing it with their colleagues due to shift work. The submarine was able to stay underwater for a maximum of 3.5 days in a row, and no deeper than 600 metres, afterwards breathing air supplies had to be refilled.

The taste of one of the biggest pizza‘s I‘ve ever eaten at l’Osteria brought me back to reality. But since I haven‘t had enough of boats this day we decided to go on a „Lichterfahrt“ on one of the „Barkassen“ this evening: a boat trip through the Speicherstadt and the harbour on one of the old boats that had brought the harbour workers forth and back to their workplaces in the earlier ages, before the Elbtunnel underneath the Elbe had been built.

Although the tour only started at 10pm the weather was still superwarm and the sky was clear. Thanks to the high enough water tide, who was varying around 3.6 metres every 6 hours depending on ebb and tide, we were also able to drive into the Speicherstadt. Our tourguide was a sailor, usually driving on the biggest container ships in the world and therefore had - besides his sexist comments now and then - a lot of interesting stories to tell. I got shivers on my skin when he told us about his first trip to western africa where, when they arrived with the huge containers ship, workers would be fighting with each other in order to get the best-paid work on the arriving ship, which would be 2-3€ on a good day. He himself as well as the other captains were not allowed to leave the ship there, since they would immediately be captured and only left free after the shipping company would‘ve paid a huge ransom for them. Because they exactly knew that the costs of spending any aditional day at the harbour and the delays that would come afterwards were so incredibly high that they would be willing to spend high amounts of money to get their captain back. Those and more stories like these made those 1.5 hours pass very quickly and we even spent half an hour more next to the second-biggest container ship class of the world. I was deeply impressed by this huge container ship, it was the second thing this day that one definitely has to see with their own eyes. This ship was able to carry 18‘000 containers and had a breaking time of 1.5 hours once at speed. Very hard to imagine but not suprising anymore once you stand underneath this giant, looking up its bow. Very impressed but also tired we made our way back to the calm hafencity passing the empty promenade where the busy fish market had been taking place this morning. What an exciting day!
