Artists for Advocacy
Elizabeth Resnick
Resnick is a professor and design curator who has organised multiple exhibitions. Her exhibition Graphic Advocacy: International Posters for a Digital Age 2001-2012 is a great example of using design for advocacy. Her collection of such posters began in the 1990’s, with the intent of cultivating change. Three exhibitions that explore this collection showcase issues of war, poverty, AIDS, sexism, racism, human and civil rights. The first exhibition The Graphic Imperative includes poster work created over a 40-year span (1965 to 2005) much of it antiwar, concern for the environment, social justice and ideological political statements and personal health issues. Graphic Intervention includes posters created over a 25-year span from 1985 to 2010. This exhibition focused on the AIDS epidemic, to which the posters capture its unfolding, progression and later, prevention. Graphic Advocacy serves as a first decade glimpse of the new millennium, reflecting the continuing optimistic hope for world peace, concern for the ecological health of the earth, justness and fairness no matter your race, gender, nationality, sexual preference, and an outpouring of concern for humanity on a number of different levels. The exhibition takes note of the technological impact of spreading advocacy, which is no longer restricted by the obstacles of print.
Pierre Bernard: “The poster is the prime field for experimenting with the visual language; it is the scene of changing ideas and aesthetics, of cultural, social and political events.”
Resnick explains her draw to posters as being their timelessness and this is evidenced by some of the best socio-political posters created in the 60s and 70s that are still meaningful 50 years later. Examples:
Seymour Chwast’s “End Bad Breath” (1968), Shigeo Fukuda’s “Victory” (1975), and Kyosti Varis’s “Your Lifemeter” (1971).
The question as to whether posters can solve the issue at hand is inconceivable. A designers purpose is to simply convey the message to their audience. How the audience interpret this is up to their conception, but it is clear that designers have been able to visually influence human behaviours. Such is clear when we consider how we may chose one brand over the other or one item over the other.
“Perhaps the better question could be, “What is the ultimate goal of design?” Why do designers feel compelled to create messages?”
Simplification of complex matters and ideas is the best way to inform an audience and this is most effectively done with the format of posters.
Tumblr media
Leo Lin demonstrates this in their work.
My favourite works from this exhibition are the most simple but the most effective and easy-to-understand without the full context.
Tumblr media
This piece by Kari Piippo conveys the lack of democracy within Russia by portraying an empty ballot box with a deceptive front covering. This portrays the idea that despite Russian efforts to vote in their country, their vote doesn't count for anything. The same representation would be relevant to the dictatorship in NK.
Tumblr media
This piece by Scorsone – Drueding takes a humorous approach to advocacy. I like this piece for its simplistic design choices in the repetitive soldier and geometric yet decorative border. The use of the silhouette was a thought I had towards the stylistic choice in my solution and reminds me of artist Kara Walker.
Rotimi Fani-Kayode and Mario Cravo Neto
Photographers Rotimi Fani-Kayode and Mario Cravo Neto works explore Yoruba culture and they were exhibited alongside each other at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The exhibition explored questions of sexuality, desire and identity. The dialogue between the works made viewers rethink photographs dominant eurocentricity. Kayode's works pushed against African and queer representational politics.
Tumblr media
I found this form of advocacy to be inspiring as the photographic works dispel eurocentric ideas of African culture. The stereotypes surrounding North Korea in the West as being indoctrinated and in favour of Kim Jong Un is simply untrue and I hope my solution can untangle these beliefs.
Fine Acts
Fine Acts are a non-profit organisation that brings together artists from all across the world to collaborate on projects for social justice. Their creative bootcamps named Sprints, produces artworks for The Ammo, a collection of their work to be used for non-commercial purposes.
Campaigns Director Svetla Baeva talks of how "research shows that opinions are changed not through more information but through empathy-inducing experiences". Due to this, campaigns have to ensure they tap into people's values and this is most effectively done through visual storytelling. The concept of playvitism is significant when concerning the labour of activism-it keeps ideas fresh and this is achieved through the evolution of ideas as well as the collaboration of artists. Director and Founder, Yana Buhrer Tavanier, talks on the value of playtivism.
"We encourage visual artists and NGOs to play with positive messaging even when communicating a difficult issue. Try to tap into positive emotions such as hope, happiness, and inspiration". This point from Tavaneir links my research in my media studies A-level that found charity advertisements and campaigns that focused on the sufferance of the subjects were less effective. So I now need to consider a way to make my exhibition piece positive, providing a solution to the end of the journey, such as refugees finding safety with the LINK charity.
These are my favourite works, due to their illustrative approach:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robert Macfarlane
Macfarlane is a British writer best known for his writing on landscapes and nature. In his collaboration with Nick Hayes, they produced a poem poster to spread the message against tree felling. I like the lino stylisation of Hayes' drawing a the manual method of working correlates to the organic presence of trees. This is inspiring when thinking to what material could best convey my message.
Tumblr media
Jonathan Barnbrook
Barnbrook is a graphic designer behind the Occupy London logo. Occupy London was a protest in response to the financial crisis in 2012 and the lack of support from the government. Barnbrook became involved with the Occupy campaigners when they were forced to stop using their previous logo based on the London Underground and held an open competition to find a new one. The London-based designer said he had wanted to avoid the typical imagery of left wing movements, such as the clenched fist, because he felt that the Occupy movement involved people from all parts of the political spectrum. He O's in the words Occupy London as symbols for location, with the L in the graphical part of the logo transformed into an arrow, indicating the journey a protester has to make to occupy a public space. Barnbrook said that throughout history society did not change until an idea gained "mainstream political currency". Although my aim won't be that of designing a logo, the idea that the influence of the mainstream in cultivating change is significant when thinking to how charities are reliant on the general public and their donations.
Lucienne Roberts
Roberts is a graphic designer who allies a commitment to accessible, engaging graphic design with a socially aware agenda. Lucienne’s devotion to deploying design for societal good  can be seen in Looking Good. Looking Good explores religious fashion and makes links to the story of habit as also being a struggle between social issues such as the powerful and poor, social care and the role of women.
" Lucienne firmly believes that we are not immune to repetition of the type of events that once drove her family to emigrate, and into hiding." -Idea that history repeats itself. North Korea has been stuck in its own cycle of history since being cut off from the rest of the world.
Lucienne lives by this point:
“We believe that ethical design is defined by its ability to increase quality of life alongside the message it conveys.”
Creating a visual response for the charity Liberty in North Korea means I am directly impacting defectors by providing aid through donations generated by the visual.

Life Metal Such an amazing @sunnofficial show last night! The best I've ever heard them! Blasts and blats of blistering bass, wafting in like a blanket of fog off of a bay. Rather than prescribing to some idea of musical harmony, sunn o)))'s music seems more like an ecosystem, a weather pattern, something to explore and get lost in. Time seemed to slow, offering the opportunity to explore the sound like a tidal pool, watching life evolve in time-lapse fast forward. Sunn o))) in their purest form, no vocals this time, not even sure there was synth. Trombone was a nice touch, like exploring a brave new frontier. Pure magick, rejuvenating, healing. They even set off the smoke alarm! . #sunno #metal #heavymetal #lifemetal #drone #dronemetal #ritual #ambient #shoegaze #trance #livemusic #concert #concertphotography #pdxmusic (at Revolution Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2W3zXShs1U/?igshid=11gl2ye15ybm8

Following pre-production sessions as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studios in Northridge, California, in July 2018, SUNN O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Steve Albini at the helm. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of colour, it sounds vast. The sessions were impeccably recorded, authentically represented and completely accurate. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used, they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for Sunn O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance based and a more logical executive process. The album was mastered and the lacquers cut from tape in October by SUNN O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band’s amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable. Life Metal features guest contributions from composer/musician/vocalist Hildur Guðnadóttir (Múm, Pan Sonic, Angel), longtime friend Tim Midyett (Silkworm, Bottomless Pit, Mint Mile), and composer Anthony Pateras,. Dark matter is reality. The album is wrapped in amazing, Renaissance style paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smith, and bold, imaginative photography from Ronald Dick. Housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket w/ wrap around OBI. (presso Bassano del Grappa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0DtWw3Jn0d/?igshid=3vao2jbzqld8
