Contemporary Gen Z Female Marketing - Rare Beauty, UO, Adidas, Laneige, FWRD, Givency + Zara - LO1 + LO3
Tumblr media
Givenchy:
https://www.fashiongonerogue.com/givenchy-spring-2022-campaign-kendall-jenner/
kendal jenner used as influencer to promote the products being shown
product category: clothing
how they have promoted product: conformed to typical ideals- showasing someone who is known for being conventionally stunning, skinny, rich and topical. Feeds into Gen Z with the distressed use of paint + the ‘clutter-core’ visuals coming through.
FWRD:
https://footwearnews.com/gallery/kendall-jenner-fwrd-campaign-summer-2022-photos/kendall-7-2/
Also utilising topical model to target the same audience who glorify + idolise her
product category: clothing + fashion
how they have promoted product: utilising body standards + sexualisation to sell products, conventional beauty. Targets Gen Z with use of vibrant colour, abstract angles, and ‘dreamy’ glow effect.
Laneige:
https://people.com/style/sydney-sweeney-on-her-skin-journey-and-second-laneige-campaign-interview/
use of influencer celebrity- who has been commended and casted for her visual appearance- small size, blonde hair, large chest + sex appeal.
product category: skincare
how they have promoted product: use of ‘dreamy’ visuals, pastel colours, airbrushed skin- showcasing ideals to sell you the idea that you can achieve this look.
Urban Outfitters:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRoiT5NYCK8&t=1s
drug references
dreamy visuals
flowers, sunsets, cool patterns
sci-fi typography
product category: clothing + fashion
how they have promoted product: includes a group of ‘cool’ and ‘edgy’ looking individuals, glorifies drug use, uses ‘trippy’ and ‘dreamy’ visuals, presents the idea of popularity being ideal.
Rare Beauty:
https://www.rarebeauty.com/
showcases a beautiful celebrity utilising product
again selling the idea that you could achieve the look of this celebrity
use of shiny, pastel + glowing products to sell this fantasy, dreamy look
use of floral imagery to promote feminity
TIKTOK Adverts
Zara:
neon + pastel colours
butterfly imagery
cloud imagery
‘dreamy’ feeling
bold use of typeface- all caps
use of 3d animation to sell the product + create cool visuals
texture + neon playing large roles in visuals - sparkly, feminine, pearls, water
Adidas:
bold use of experimental typography, utilising shapes within the text (heart shape)
3d renders
blue, lilac + pastel colour scheme
shiny visuals
Urban Outfitters:
vintage imagery + style direction- use of VHS, retro style colours and layering video
bold use of typography- sticking to elongated, retro style typefaces- either fully capitalised, or not capitalised at all
feels edgy and cool- buying into this idea that the ideal is to be trendy and youthful.
Overall, from looking at how some of the biggest Gen Z brands are selling their products, it was easy to detect themes amongst them. Although the marketing isn't as stereotypical as it was in the past, the ideals being presented have just been re-packaged to appear more ‘unique’ and ‘edgy’. Carrying the same messaging, the female Gen Z audience is still seeing these conventionally stunning standards through influencers and models. This ‘dreamy’ aesthetic of lilacs, blues, pastels and clouds is really current and popular, which i find plays into this idealistic notion. Alongside this, the use of vibrant colours, patterns and vintage visuals is also really popular amongst these campaigns.
The key themes shown are clothing, appearance, popularity, and appearing ‘cool’- which i find all play into this societal role of being ‘perfect’. I think this gives me a good indication on what to focus on- as these topics are all very current amongst the gen z female audience- leading to comparison, and the need to ‘fit’ this societal demand.

LiNK Social Media Banners
Tumblr media
My computer has stopped working so it has put me behind but I have created additional visual responses that are not present within my process book (would miss the print deadline before I could finish the visuals). These banners can be used on all social media platforms within a users profile picture.

I wanted to have a look at some zines and more punk inspiration as I think this aesthetic and motive closely coincides with the kind of work I want to create, I love how a lot of the design in zines are both expressive and overwhelming yet manage to convey a clear meaning. This has been achieved though bold, capitalised type overtop of the duo-tone designs which is something that I want to replicate.
These images are taken from a book I took out of the library 'Punk press, l'histoire d'une révolution esthéique 1969-1979' which has more of a focus on French zines. I also had a look at 'Sniffin' glue' a popular monthly punk zine in 1976.

The book title really reminded me of Georgia O’Keeffe and her paintings. Her work typically portrays forms of nature in detailed but abstract forms. I’m drawn to her depictions of flowers up close and the way they reflect the typical appearance of a vagina. The connection made between a women’s vagina and a powerful part of nature is celebratory and beautiful when considering the shame surrounding women’s bodies. The depiction of vaginas in the media is only seen in porn, for one purpose only and usually sculpted to perfection. Art is subjective to the viewer, but regardless of whether O’Keeffe intended her work to be read like this, feminists view her work as a statement of female empowerment. Vaginas come in all shapes and sizes and that is an important concept society needs to grasp.

24/05/24 - Using Tape
I used some yellow tape (the colour I wanted my ambigrams to be in) to create a real life exhibition of what my ambigrams would look like on the street.
At first, people could not read what was written, however with constant changes I got to a point where people were walking past and instantly understanding what it said. This was successful, and gave me an impression to how the public would react when they saw these around the Bournemouth beach and gardens.

This is my final book, photographed with the matchday scarf, showing multiple assets from the content. Overall I am very pleased how this has turned out. The only issue that occurred was spelling ‘your’ not ‘you’re’ on two occasions during the making of this editorial piece.

Book examples for editorial layouts:
It was suggested to me to look into the top two books, the first one I found in the library and the second one I bought since it was cheap. But looking through both I’d wish I’d thought to collect some visual research from these. These books also reminded me that I owned Turning Pages, I found a lot looking through this again which I hadn’t since the first year. I found a couple examples of duo-tone throughout all three of these books which supported why I was wanting to use it. I found examples of sparse information and how it’s laid out to create a hierarchy, and I also found examples of fold-out pages or leaflets which were used a lot to expand the imagery. So looking through these supports the changes and developments I want to make.

This is my final video after all the adjustments from the last week. I love the outcome and I think adding the description at the beginning really helps illustrate the narrative more clearly. I also wanted to add the cardboard poster as I think this helps the poem stick in the viewers mind more. Its punchy, uses a limited colour palette like the zine inspiration I looked at and gets across a clear message

Evaluation
In this unit I feel I created outcomes that were appropriate to my initial intentions going into the unit, I wanted to create some kind of solution that limits the amount of consumer items that are misrepresentative of the cultures they are inspired by, and have been created on a basis of exploitation or ignorance. I went on a journey of a mix of ideas, approaches, possible outcomes and areas to focus, but I feel I would be happy seeing the project I came out with, at the start of the term, knowing the kind of project I wanted to create.
This term, similarly to my last 2, I have struggled to find my footing in a project, and I often loose motivation or passion for the projects I have started to create. In this instance for this term, I began to create a browser extension, despite not using them, and despite wanting to move away from UX/UI for this submission for variety and expansion of different skills. I think I went down this path as I felt it was the correct solution that made the most sense at the time, and should have considered more if I should be creating it, if its not something I would have been proud to place in my portfolio. I hope to avoid these creative blocks and places I get myself stuck in my 3rd year, by continuing to experiment with concept projects during the summer, and consider more what work I love to create, and what skills I want to develop.
Additionally, this term I was passionate about experiential marketing. I have seen loads of creative solutions involving public participation and huge exciting installations, and I really wanted to create one, as I knew it would be something I was proud to place in my portfolio, and a new area I wanted to explore. My outcomes unfortunately do not display this intention. I created a concept LED lighting system, which I do feel would be beautiful and successful in execution, having known and researched Gen Z, I know this would become an instagrammable and Tiktok photo opportunity that people would share and visit, but it’s not what I wanted to create beginning the unit. The reason I think I was unable to achieve this intention to the extent I wanted to, was a lack of research, and I think also a lack of bravery to work outside of guidelines I had previously. Going forward into new projects, I want to consider better the body of work I want to have at the end, and make sure I achieve this with better planning and dedicating time to the right areas.
However, I think I made a strong and visually impressive Festival Brand Identity that I am proud to place in my portfolio. I feel my style as a designer starting to lend towards bright digital maximalism, which is exciting to me, and I feel myself improve with this every project. I feel all my assets have consistency in visual attributes and quality of execution. I think I succeeded in this Brand Identity by showing it off across a large selection of outcomes, showing its versatility, and showing how successful it could be in the real world. I would be very excited to work on a project like this after uni in industry, so I am happy with how I have developed my skillset in this area.
