What is the difference between blue-tinted and blue block lenses?

Blue-tinted lenses are also known as anti-glare lenses. Blue-tinted and blue block lenses can quickly reduce the eyestrain coming from various sources. However, there are a few differences between the two lenses, and their usage depends on your needs. There are distinctively three differences between blue-tinted and blue block lenses.

Difference Between Blue-tinted and Blue Block

Blue-tinted lenses prevent back-glare from occurring from the light striking the back of glass lenses. Also, blue-tinted glasses equalise the intensity of the light by producing a destructive interference. It is because the blue-tint film of the glass has a thickness equivalent to one-fourth of the wavelength of the light.

The blue-tint coatings can reduce the glare from a full spectrum of visible light. These lenses can reduce eye strain and enhance vision. However, blue-tinted lenses are perfect for outdoor activities, driving, and screen usage.

Blue block lenses can easily absorb over 90% of blue light. Blue light has a wavelength between 380 nm to 495 nm. The lenses only allow some blue light to pass to avoid facing any colour distortion. Good lenses can block more than 60% of the blue light from passing through. Blue block lenses can also normalise your circadian rhythm, along with reducing the risk of macular degeneration.

Blue-tinted lenses come with a hard coating on both sides as it is necessary to have a high index of refraction. Anti-glare lenses with hard coating are better than plastic lenses. However, blue block lenses come with layered substrates or blue-light blocking coatings. Some lenses are also infused with melanin to block 98% of the blue light. Blue cut lenses often feature a brownish-yellow tint.
