Why do you line up your cars and blocks? Naoki Higashida a non-verbal boy with Autism answered this question in his book “The reason I Jump”. I found his answer very interesting as I always wondered why our Spartan had such an intense fascination in lining up all sorts of things. “When we’re playing in this way, our brains feel refreshed and clear” - He says. Never really thought of it in this way, putting things in order to filter out the chaos around you . When the Spartan was younger he enjoyed collecting things (cars, trains,dinosaurs, balls etc) always bringing them with him wherever he went never really using them for its intended purpose. It definitely was a red flag for me even before the diagnosis . Imaginative play is so crucial in the early years as it develops children’s language, social and cognitive skills. It requires the child to be aware of their social surroundings and the social cues they experience which they then express through their play. Children on the spectrum struggle to absorb this when it comes naturally for most. I remember thinking If I would ever see our Spartan engage in imaginative play. Over time our Spartan’s cognitive thinking and language developed which now has him engaging in imaginative play (see video) . Our Spartan’s development is not a typical one therefore it takes time to reach certain milestones. That’s why you’ll hear a lot of us Autism parents saying ‘little wins are big wins in our home’ . Something so natural for a child to achieve has taken years of therapy for my child to achieve.
