Must-See Digital Nomad Hotspots in Africa
Tumblr media
Many digital nomads neglect Africa on their travels, and this is definitely their loss. Africa has some incredible locations and some of of these rival anywhere on the planet in terms of suitability for remote work. We have already explored Europe, South America and Asia in previous articles and also recommended colivings that you can find in each location, so welcome to Digital Nomad Hotspots in Africa.
Cape Town, South Africa
Dwarfed by the imposing Table Mountain, Cape Town is a popular port destination in South Africa.
It has always been a popular port for ships that are traversing the globe as it offers a convenient place to dock at the tip of the African continent.
In this respect, it is often considered the last friendly stop before a long and inhospitable ocean journey.
In terms of digital nomads, it is easy to see why it attracts them in numbers.
Cape Town is a sun-drenched destination that offers a wide range of high-quality accommodations, including some excellent coliving options such as Cape Coliving, which has fast, reliable internet for remote workers.
Cape Town is a huge city that houses some 3.5 million inhabitants, so it isn’t somewhere to go if you want to escape city life.
If City life is your vibe, though, this will be ideal as it comes with all of the amenities of a modern 24-hour city, including shopping malls, supermarkets and an abundance of nightlife.
Although on paper Cape Town has a high crime rate, most of this is confined to the poorer township areas that tourists and digital nomads should be avoiding anyway, so it should be safe for most digital nomads.
Marrakesh, Morocco
Long considered the jewel in the crown of Morocco, Marrakesh is an ancient city with a densely packed walled medina that dates back to the Berber empire.
For those who are fans of history, this is one digital nomad hotspot that will be hard to beat or forget.
There are mosques, palaces, gardens and densely packed souks to explore and the vibrant colours all around will surely brighten even the most jaded soul.
There are coworking and coliving spaces such as L'Blassa in Marrakesh as well as more traditional options of apartments and hotels. The chance to stay in an authentic Moroccan Riad should not be missed.
A Riad is an ancient house built around a central courtyard. The courtyard is open to the sky. They are usually two to three stories tall, and the central area often has a pool or comfortable seating and a social area in which to relax.
Take the time to breathe in the culture and the atmosphere in this vibrant city of just under a million inhabitants.
Marrakesh is generally considered fairly safe for tourists, though the usual caveats apply about being aware of your surroundings. It is easy to be pickpocketed in some of the crowded souks and streets around the medina.
Nairobi, Kenya
As well as being a vibrant and bustling capital city in its own right, Nairobi also has a national park within its boundaries that houses lions, giraffes and zebras.
There is also an elephant orphanage, and this is very well maintained by a reputable charity.
The image most people have of Kenya is the distinctively dressed Massai people in their red and black tunics, but there is so much more to the country and the city of Nairobi than this.
Like every modern city, there are premium shopping malls.
Fast internet access is standard in Nairobi and the climate is in the 20s for most of the year, which makes it extremely pleasant to spend time there.
In terms of accommodation, there is the usual mix of hotels and apartments.
There don’t seem to be any permanent coliving options at present, but there are pop-up colivings from time to time like coworking safari, and if you time your visit well, it is possible to catch one of these.
Cairo, Egypt
Egypt has always held a particular place in the hearts of many travellers, with images of the pyramids sparking the first impulse to travel somewhere exotic.
Whether inspired by movies like Indiana Jones, history documentaries about Tutankhamun, or the love story of Anthony and Cleopatra, this land of antiquity and enchantment has always fascinated many.
Being able to live and work in Cairo, the capital city of Egypt allows for travel to all of the main tourist places of interest as well as providing all of the amenities that a digital nomad or remote worker could need.
Tumblr media
Cairo is the largest city in Africa, with over 21 million people.
This is definitely one for those who enjoy a bustling city environment rather than more quiet towns and villages.
The Nile River flows through Cairo and is perfect for a leisurely cruise if you need a few days away from work.
As you would expect with a modern and vibrant city, there is a wide array of accommodation options from hostels to hotels and coliving spaces like Shaha Gardens.
There are also a number of coworking places for those who feel most productive when they are in an office environment.
Taghazout, Morocco
Morocco’s second entry on this list, and this time it is the surfer’s paradise of Taghazout, a sleepy village that has been adopted by digital nomads because of the lifestyle it offers.
In some respects this mirrors the journey that Bansko in Bulgaria has been on, a quiet village that became a hotspot largely by word of mouth.
As you would expect from a digital nomad hotspot, the internet is fast, and the climate is temperate all year round, with a comfortable 21C or 70F even in December.
In this respect, the climate is close to that of the Canary Islands, which isn’t all that surprising.
Despite being owned by Spain and, therefore, politically part of Europe, the Canaries are located off the coast of Morocco.
There are some excellent coliving and coworking options to choose from, whether in Taghazout itself or in one of the nearby towns, which are also seeing an increase in footfall because of its popularity.
Sundesk in Taghazout provides an excellent option for coliving and working and costs around £700 for a full month at their cheapest rate.

The second great lake we visit on our tour is Lake Nakuru. 30 minutes’ drive from Elementaita, the lake is situated in the middle of the national park to which it gives its name. Teeming with wildlife the park has so much to offer. Sometimes, when the water levels are low, the entire lake is covered in flamingos, turning the whole area pink. Lions, buffalos, as well as many rhinos, call this corner of Kenya home and a game drive around the park is always rewarding. If we are lucky we may even spot a leopard relaxing in a tree beside the lake. After a game-packed day, we arrive back at Sunbird Lodge in time to enjoy the sunset over the lake, before sitting down for dinner and toasting to the day’s adventures. Overnight: Lake Elementaita| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. DAY 4: Masai Mara Lake Elementaita - Masai Mara. Leaving the Great Rift Valley behind we drive to Kenya's famous Masai Mara, the setting for the Great Migration and countless wildlife documentaries. The Masai Mara is the highlight of any safari. We arrive for lunch at our camp and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool and waiting for the late afternoon when the temperature cools to head out on our first Mara game drive. Back at the camp, dinner is served and gives us the perfect opportunity to look back at our day and relive all those highlights. Overnight: Masai Mara Julia's River Camp| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. DAY 5: Safari in the Mara After breakfast this morning we drive across the plains in search of the Big Five and other plains game. The early mornings are one of the best times to view the animals as this is when they are their most active before the heat of the day sets in and after a mid-morning of relaxation and lunch, head out into the reserve for a chance to tick off some more animals on your “must see” list. Keep your eyes peeled as you hunt for the last members on your list. Overnight: Masai Mara Julia's River Camp | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. DAY 6: Optional hot air ballooning This morning, there is the opportunity to rise early and experience a game-viewing adventure from an entirely different perspective! A hot air balloon safari across the Masai Mara (at additional cost) which takes off in the crisp morning air, and lasts for approximately an hour, allows for a beautifully peaceful experience floating silently high above plains, forests, and rivers. Upon landing a fully cooked champagne breakfast awaits. More game viewing opportunities arise later that morning en-route back to camp and in the afternoon. In addition to the abundance of spectacular game, there are also over 450 species of birds that have been identified in the Masai Mara Ecosystem. Overnight: Masai Mara Julia's River Camp| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. DAY 7: Masai Mara - Nairobi. This morning we enjoy our last sunrise in the Masai Mara with tea or coffee on the veranda. Things to see and do in Kenya
Tumblr media
Things to see and do in Kenya
Climb Mount Kenya At 4,986m (16,358ft) above sea level, this extinct volcano is the second-highest mountain in Africa. The Mountain Club of Kenya runs mountain huts and publishes guides for climbers. Even if you don't climb to the upper slopes, it is worth spending time on the forested lower slopes below the ice-capped peak, where interesting wildlife abounds. Climb Mount Longonot This distinctive volcano, which last erupted in the 1860s, rises dramatically above the Rift Valley floor, and its slopes can be ascended in around 90 minutes. Allow another hour for the descent, and 3-4 hours if you want to walk around the rim of the perfect volcanic crater. Day trip to Nairobi National Park Nairobi National Park, only 8km (5 miles) from the city centre, is Kenya's oldest national park. Today, it still looks much as it did in the early photographs – wild, undulating pasture – and supports most of East Africa’s best known wildlife, including lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and zebra (but not elephant). Experience the magic of the Masai Mara Kenya's most popular game park is named after the Maasai tribe, who migrated south from the Nile Valley in the 17th century. A northern extension to Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, it is one of the best places in Africa for seeing lion, cheetah and leopard, but is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration and dramatic crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River. Explore Kenya’s coral coast Visitors can choose between scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing, water-skiing, swimming or surfing along Kenya's coral coast. The most popular resorts near Mombasa include Bamburi, Kikambala, Kilifi, Malindi, Nyali and the 10km- (6-mile) long, dazzlingly white Diani Beach. Another good base for watersports is the Rift Valley lake of Naivasha, about 1.5 hours drive from Nairobi. Explore Lamu Town Set on a picturesque offshore island close to the Somali border, Lamu is a charming old Swahili city and UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic mosques and fine old Arab houses replete with impressive carved wooden doors. Highlights of the town include the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum and the Fortress. Go twitching in Kakamega Forest The only rainforest in Kenya, this lovely spot near the Ugandan border is arguably the prime birdwatching site in the country, thanks to the presence of several dozen forest species found nowhere else in the country. For non-birders, the shady forest paths and plentiful monkeys still offer lots of charm. Go wild at Lake Nakuru National Park Boasting a dramatic setting in the Rift Valley, this park is dominated by a lake whose edges are frequently home to hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos. It is also one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries, supporting high concentrations of both black and white rhino, and you may spot a leopard in the giant yellowwood acacia trees. Help save the elephants at Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Watch baby elephants play at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, an important sanctuary where orphaned elephants are hand-reared before being released back into the wild. Bordering Nairobi National Park, the sanctuary is also home to several orphaned rhinos, and is an important player in the fight against poaching. Jump aboard a dhow Spend an evening afloat on a romantic dhow (traditional Arab sailing boat), feasting on delicious seafood and watching the moon rise over Mombasa's old harbour. Lunchtime or dinner cruises are available on these beautiful floating restaurants, and some even have space for dancing on the deck. Marvel at Mombasa Enjoy this coastal city's Swahili flavour in the Old Town, with its narrow, crowded streets; watch the sailing dhows in the Old Harbour and catch the sound and light show at Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and is now a museum. Pay a visit to Laikipia Plateau Discover a recent conservation success where former farmland has been opened up as game sanctuaries and stocked with big game including the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino and leopard. The old farmsteads here have been converted into delightful, luxurious accommodations. This vast wilderness area remains largely underexplored by tourists. Quaff high tea at Elsamere Situated on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the former home of Joy Adamson (of Born Free fame) is now a museum and conservation research centre. Set in grounds teeming with birds – and home to a group of handsome colobus monkeys – Elsamere also serves excellent high tea. Shop until you drop in Mombasa Biashara Street is a great place to buy traditional kikoy and khanga clothing. Makupa Market, off Mwembe Tayari, is the main city market. Serious souvenir shoppers should also head for the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Village, where disabled men and women produce high-quality leatherwork, jewellery and other crafts. Stay a night at Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Situated a short distance from the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa, this small private sanctuary bordering the vast Tsavo National Park doubles as a luxury hotel and well-positioned hide, overlooking a salt lick and a waterhole that frequently attracts aggregations of a hundred or more elephants. Step into the land of giants at Amboseli National Park The 392sq km (151sq mile) Amboseli National Park lies at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Wildlife includes lion, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo and gazelle, but the park is most famous for the large herds of elephant attracted by the perennial swamps. Bird-watching is popular, and visitors can learn about the local Maasai people through homestead visits. Take the road less travelled to Lake Turkana In the barren northern reaches of Kenya, Lake Turkana is a strange and beautiful oasis, known to locals as the Jade Sea due to its size and striking colour. The lake provides great fishing, while its islands have healthy crocodile and hippo populations. The semi-nomadic Turkana tribe are just as interesting as the lake itself. Take to the skies in a hot air balloon Float over great herds of game in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Hour-long excursions set off at dawn and end with champagne breakfasts. Almost all the lodges in the reserve offer this experience, which gives ballooners the chance to see the wildebeest migration from the air between July and September. Tour Nairobi's museums Browse the ethnographic and archaeological exhibits of the National Museum, which lies within walking distance of the city centre. And then head out to the suburban Karen Blixen Museum, which occupies the farmhouse made famous by the nominal author's book, Out of Africa. The Nairobi Railway Museum also covers an important chapter of the city’s history. 48 Hours in Nairobi..things to do
Tumblr media
Nairobi is Indeed the Safari capital of the world ---- A world in tune with nature Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a national park within its boundaries. This, along with its other tourist attractions makes it a prime tourist destination. Nairobi has a diverse and multicultural composition; there are a number of churches, mosques, temples, and gurudwaras within the city. Nairobi is home to several museums; heritage sites and monuments, plus spectacular five star hotels to cater for safari-bound tourists. So whether visiting Nairobi for business or pleasure, there are many activities and experiences to suit any traveler - fun and interesting activities for anyone to enjoy, from the breathtaking scenery and beautiful abundance of natural attractions to the glamour and glitz of the modern city lifestyle. A park within the city Take a drive to the National park, which is located right within the city and is only 20 minutes away. The drive from the airport already promises some eye-catching views such as the vast savannah with Zebras prancing along or feeding. The park is open as early as 8am and mornings are probably the best times to go to maximize on the 100+ mammal species you can see.  It also offers various activities, the most popular being the Safari walk and the Nature trail. Inner Carnivore Meat lovers and foodies can indulge to their fill at the Carnivore restaurant that is only 10 minutes away from the National Park. The Carnivore is a world famous restaurant known for serving game meat and some of the most succulent beef, pork and lamb on the African continent. Experiment with Ostrich meatballs and some crocodile meat, all the while getting your sweet side satisfied with sticky sweet and spicy spare ribs. A plate of this all you-can-eat buffet style goodness is $25 per head. Don’t forget to try the local beer, Tusker and the restaurant’s popular ‘Dawa’ that goes for $3.50 and $5 respectively. Nairobi painted at the ART GALLERY Kuona Arts Centre is a newly refurbished outdoor and indoor gallery that showcases eclectic African pieces and usually holds performance art shows every other weekend. The gallery is home to various artists who, while working in their stalls also offer classes to you and your young ones, free of charge. Maasai Market-Coloured sensations This open-air market is a shopping experience you would not want to miss out on. Set behind the historic Supreme Court of Kenya, the Maasai market offers tourists the best of the best in African wear, accessories and home décor. Items are handmade and carefully laid out by the friendly market women you will meet there. $30 will get you a bag full of African goodness and a lot more of course. Refuel at the nearby Java Coffee house with mint lemonades at $1.60 and creamy frappuccinos from $3.50. Maasai Market has various locations throughout the city and this particular one found in the city centre is open on weekends from 9a.m to 5p.m. Our little Mumbai Diamond plaza also known as ‘Little Mumbai’ is one of Nairobi’s best-kept secrets. It is 15 minutes away from the city centre by public transport, which will cost you a mere 25 cents, (KSH20). A shopping plaza with a large open-air food-court that serves all the Indian food you could ever want. From freshly made butter naan to succulent chicken tikka breasts and enticing masala fries, the place never disappoints for both locals and foreigners. Maru’s Bhajias across the parking lot is the place to go for crispy, hot and fresh Bhajias (fried sliced spicy potatoes). And for the best tangerine juice your taste buds will forever crave, Al’s juice bar serves up freshly squeezed juices of all different flavors. The sugarcane one is worth a try too, $2.50. The food will only cost you a max of $10 or less, depending on the number of plates. Boat Ride in the Park The vast Uhuru Park is found right in the city centre and is reminiscent of New York’s central park with its serene, natural ambience surrounded by the busy and bustling streets of corporate Nairobi. Visit the park on a sunny afternoon and go on a boat ride across the artificial lake or take a leisurely stroll along the scenic footbridges. Uhuru park provides perfect picnic spots all over and the city not being far away; one can easily walk there to buy some food and head back for a relaxing afternoon laying on the freshly manicured grass. Giraffe Manor Ever wanted to have breakfast with Giraffes? Well the Giraffe manor, promises just that. This boutique style hotel is tucked away in the suburbs of Nairobi, just 10 minutes away from the National Park. A giraffe orphanage turned into a hotel by a wildlife enthusiast, the manor is a perfect place to accommodate you for your short stay. Rooms are delightfully designed and are located in strategic locations to let you have a good view of these majestic creatures or perhaps they may have a good view of you when they pop their head through the windows from time to time during the day. Karen Blixen Museum Situated 10km from the city, This is the home of former Danish author Karen Blixen made famous by her book and the movie based on the book “Out of Africa” which chronicles her life at the estate.   The Museum is open to the Public every day (9.30 am to 6pm) including weekends and public holidays. Guided tours are offered continuously.  A museum shop offers handicrafts, posters and postcards, the Movie ‘Out of Africa’, books and other Kenyan souvenirs. Animal Orphanage It was established in 1964 as a refuge and rehabilitation centre for wild animals, found abandoned or injured in Kenya. In a setting for visitors to walk around and have close up views to a variety of animals such as, lions, crocodiles, cheetah, leopards, wild cats, and wild dogs. Watch out for the group of monkeys and baboons roaming freely around. Nairobi Safari walk This is conservation based recreation facility. The combination of skilled and creative landscape design, unique wildlife species and detailed interpretation, renders the facility supremacy in tourism and conservation education. It offers you an opportunity to learn what you expect to see across the country. Introductory talks on Kenya’s parks and reserves can be arranged for you by the naturalists. You will have a taste of Kenya’s rich animal collection including the rare bongo, white rhino, albino zebra, and African cats, antelopes and primates. Nairobi National Museum National Museum of Kenya is a multi-disciplinary institution whose role is to collect, preserve, study, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage. This is for the purposes of enhancing knowledge, appreciation, respect and sustainable utilization of these resources for the benefit of Kenya and the world, for now and posterity. The Nairobi Museum has an exclusive exhibition for the Birds of East Africa. The main aim is to display to the public the common species encountered most regularly as well as some of the rare, endangered and migratory ones. Mamba Village Mamba Village is famous for its crocodile farm. The pens are home to an estimated 70 Nile crocodiles. our Maasai Ostriches can also be found strutting around their pen with grace. Visitors often come into direct personal contact with them when given the opportunity to feed these gallant birds. The experience is always satisfying and exciting especially for children. Within the village there is also a tented camp available for accommodation to visitors. Giraffe Centre The giraffe centre was ostensibly established as a breeding ground for the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Information about the Giraffe is provided at the centre and an elevated feeding platform was installed to give visitors the opportunity to hand feed the giraffes. Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Elephant calves orphaned by poachers or natural occurrences are brought here from all over the country. They receive extremely specialized treatment and personalized care from highly dedicated staff. The orphanage is open to the public during the calves feeding times where they can interact with calves and watch them being fed while they are informed how each of the elephant calves came to be at the orphanage. There is also an option for visitors to choose to adopt an elephant where they will be in charge of the elephants care at the orphanage.

Nairobi Arboretum The Nairobi arboretum occupies 30 hectares and holds over 350 different species of trees. It is also home to over 100 migrant and resident birds. The arboretum is one of Nairobi’s few remaining green spaces, with jogging trails, walking paths and picnic lawns. Bomas of Kenya Bomas of Kenya was established by the government in 1971 as a subsidiary company of Kenya Tourist Development Corporation as a tourist attraction. It also mandated to preserve, maintain and promote rich and diverse cultural values of various tribal groups of Kenya. Displays of different aspects of Kenyan culture are on display such as living styles, arts and craft, music and dance. These are some of the few many things you can do/visit on your short stay in this magical city-the only city that has a live park next to it. Nairobi will captivate you and give you the notion of out of this world experience. Guest Blog Post: By Kevin Le
It was around 4am that I was awoken by the sounds of something massive and very near, the roar of a startled elephant. It had wandered too close our camp, a reminder of how wild this country truly is. I turned back into sleep with a smile. At the breakfast, we laughed about how it had all woken us. We were a motley crew of world travellers and locals. Canada, Kuwait, Germany, Taiwan, India and Kenya all sat together, eating chapattis. New found friends. We talked about how we had all ended up there, as travellers seeking adventure, as humans seeking wonder and the unknown. Time flew by us, smitten by each other’s company and the day arose. Clear skies amidst a rainy season, the perfect conditions for a safari.
It is a sight one can never forget. The great plains of the Mara. An endless ocean of grass, billowing in the wind, illuminated by the roaring red sun. Soon millions of wildebeest would come roaring across the Serengeti, to graze in the plains of the Mara. And with prey would come the predators. From biggest to smallest. From 17 foot crocs to vultures. The great hunt would erupt and the circle of life renew. But for now the hunters waited, in the shade, watching, hungry.
A pride of lions lay in the shade, lips licking. A pack of hyena chortled nervously. A herd of elephants rolled proudly by, sheltering a calf. A rabble of nimble and too- exhausting-to-catch antelope hovered cautiously by, grazing. Mighty giraffe towered among them, picking at the acacia Soon there would come easier prey. A shout from our tour guide. Miles away in the distance, a cheetah was having none of that. We took out of binoculars and watched as it burst across the plain in a cloud of red dirt, at a family of impala. We watched in awe.
A safari is just one of the many incredible opportunities in Kenya. Masai Mara is its most prestigious and popular for good reason. All members of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, African elephant, cape buffalo, and black rhinoceros) can be found there. The best time to visit the Mara is from July to October when the migration occurs. If you prefer a quieter, and less crowded experience, travel from November to May is less crowded and cheaper. It is much greener, however it may be quite rainy and without the wildebeest.
3 day Safari Masai Mara: from $450 USD per person http://www.splendoursofafricatours.com/safaris-adventure-3days-mara-adventure.html#
Mara Migration:
While riding in the comfort of safari vans can be comfy it doesn't compare to the kilometers long bike ride through Hell's Gate National Park (AN ABSOLUTE MUST). Picture towering red cliffs (the ones that inspired those in the Lion King) surrounding a gargantuan 68 square kilometers of grassland. Picture yourself cruising through the midst of it, on a tiny dirt bike over a thin dirt trail enveloped by its vastness, all teeming with life. Giraffes, buffalo, antelope, zebras and hordes of baboons roam freely. Approach them if you can (though mind the buffalo and baboons, they can be quite aggressive.). As you hit the end of the dirt trail you will escapade through ancient ravines still raw with volcanic glass (right where they filmed Tomb Raider). Looking for a rare souvenir? Don't be shy to acquiesce some Kenyan obsidian, the ground is bursting with the stuff.
Fun fact: beware of flash floods during the rainy season. Rain miles away can cause floods

Other Activities:
Another highlight of visiting in Kenya is riding Ostriches (and possibly eating them).
Ostrich Farm:
Ride 500 Shillings ($5, 4 Euros, 3 pounds)
Tour of Ostrich Farm: 300 Shillings ($3, 2.25 Euros, 2 British Pounds)
Ostrich Platters:
Portion: 1,000 Shillings
1/2 kg (1.1 lbs) 2,380 Shillings
1 kg (2.2 lbs) 4,750 Shillings
http://wanderingtrader.com/kenya/nairobi/maasai-ostrich-farm-resort-nairobi-kenya/
Carnivore Restaurant is another must visit. For about 35USD you can enjoy an all you eat meat BBQ ranging from the usual chicken, beef, pork, lamb, rabbit to the exotic of alligator, kangaroo and ostrich. The atmosphere is pure luxury.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivore_(restaurant)
If you've a softer spot and prefer something less carnal, make sure to visit the Elephant Orphanage. There is a public visit, $7 mininum donation for entrance every day from 11am to noon. Watch as they bring out baby elephants for play time. The elephants will often walk up to the crowd and you will get to pet them.
https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/
Giraffe Center is also a must for tender-hearted. You will get to feed and pet Giraffes. Entrance is $10 USD.
www.giraffecenter.org
Travel Tips:
Kenya requires you have a tourist visa which you may pay for upon entry
$50 single entry, $100 for multiple entry (Pay in USD), Valid for 6 months
http://www.kenyaembassy.com/dcservices/appforvisaonline.aspx
It is recommended to not bring large amounts of cash flying in. Bring enough USD to pay for the Visa and perhaps for emergency transit. Bring enough Kenyan Shillings for transportation and the first day or two. It is best to bring a credit card and withdraw shillings at Kenya's many banks (like a Barclays) or at secure ATMs in the malls.
#1 TIP. Be aware and expect to be scammed. If you look like a foreigner, they will try to scam you at almost EVERY single transaction. Make sure to count your change, and check for the prices as advertised. This particularly applies to taking the bus and restaurants. Many Kenyans will have no shame over ripping you off. All foreigners are perceived as rich.
Do not show your expensive phone in public. Get a cheaper burner and sim card for under $20. Pay for call time/data time as you go.
Do not give to beggars, even if they are children and no matter how adorable they look. This will make you a target for other beggars and pick pockets.
Bring a student card. The fee for foreigners at some national parks/exhibits can be as much as 10X more. However, there is often better pricing for students, international or local.
If you really don't feel like paying inflated prices, don't be afraid to bargain. A little conversation goes a long way in Kenya. I got free admission to the Giraffe Center when I told them I was a volunteer teacher.

Then we travel on to the Daphne Sheldrick’s Centre and visit the many baby elephants that have been rescued from threatening situations in Kenya’s various national parks and even get a chance to see the calves being fed and playing with the staff. Nairobi at Osoita Lodge| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Next stop is the Karen Blixen Museum. Located in an area which was once part of Karen Blixen’s vast coffee estate, the museum was Karen’s home from 1917 until 1931.The house and grounds were made famous by the film ‘Out of Africa ’and have been restored by the Danish community of Kenya. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the twentieth century. After lunch at the lovely Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens, we depart on the next part of our adventure that takes us from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi city to the small but beautiful soda ash lake located in the famous Great Rift Valley, named Lake Elementaita. Lake Elementaita is home to numerous flamingos and over 400 species of birds. We spend the night at a lovely eco-friendly lodge perched on a hillside overlooking the lake. Overnight: Lake Elementaita| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Day 3: Elementaita & Nakuru Elementaita – Lake Nakuru – Elementaita. Lions, buffalos as well as many rhinos call this corner of Kenya home and a game drive around the park is always rewarding. If we are lucky we may even spot a leopard relaxing in a tree beside the lake. After a game-packed day we arrive back at Sunbird Lodge in time to enjoy the sun set over the lake, before sitting down for dinner and toasting to the day’s adventures. Overnight: Lake Elementaita| Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Day 4: Masai Mara Lake Elementaita – Masai Mara. Leaving the Great Rift Valley behind we drive to Kenya’s famous Masai Mara, the setting for the Great Migration and countless wildlife documentaries. Overnight: Masai Mara | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Overnight: Masai Mara | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Day 6: Optional hot air ballooning This morning, there is the opportunity to rise early and experience a game viewing adventure from an entirely different perspective! Upon landing a fully cooked champagne breakfast awaits. More game viewing opportunities arise later that morning en-route back to camp and in the afternoon.
