A New Dawn Will Rise in Sorcier

Summary: Sneaking into Catarina's room late at night, Alan comes to an important realisation.

Rating: T - Suitable for teens, 13 years and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor suggestive adult themes.

Alan tried to keep as silent as possible as he moved closer to her bed.

It was all silent at the palace that evening. Geordo, much to his displeasure, was summoned away to greet a foreign dignitary, and Mary, under the terms of their little agreement, let him have the night for not disturbing her tea time two afternoons ago. They were just back from a short trip abroad, to a summer resort in Quido, where he played for a bunch of unappreciative aristocrats.

Despite the comforts afforded to them based on their status and wealth, as well as the conveniences of magic, it had been a tiring journey. They settled in for the night, being decided that Catarina would be spending the night in the palace, instead of making the perilous journey through the capital streets so late at night to her parents’ townhouse. The youngest prince thought it was a good idea, sneak in a few more hours with the object of his love away from his competitors, assigning her the room next to his, instead of the one she usually stayed in, next to his brother’s, but the way she slept so peacefully next to him did nothing to soothe his nerves.

Alan was a musician. If anything, he had keen ears and could perceive the slightest turn of her body under the covers, even through the walls, and it was disquieting, in a very particular way. So, he just stayed awake to count her breaths, matching his rhythm to hers, sneaking into the neighbouring chambers. He laid there, on the floor, and watched the dance of the moonlight shaded by the flowing curtains from the open window overhead as they shone down on her skin, the way the wind reached its hands down and pulled its fingers through her hair.

It was soothing to watch Catarina simply exist. Like watching the sunset or spending the time to play his violin out in the garden, it was a way to alleviate the stress from the journey. Despite the way he always acted carefree, the stress was adding up. He could not take her everywhere he plays with him. He is not her fiancé, not her brother, and it was not proper for her to travel around with a man who was neither. In the same vein, he could not leave her behind without worrying. Likewise, while he would not mind much keeping himself to local venues, it does not bode well for princes to simmer at the palace too much, regardless of their interest in the succession.

His goal feels so far away, his claim is so tenuous, and it does not help that he began his chase much behind everyone else. He and Mary might be helping each other at the moment, and he owes her the fact he is not completely disqualified at this point, but he must not forget that his fiancée is also a rival, and he could not trust her further than he could throw her.

He sighed as another gust of wind ran over the two of them. Oh, if he could only release these emotions in him and just drag her closer to him, to find purchase by digging his head into the crook of her neck. If there was a way to make her feel the emotions which he felt, he could not find it yet. For just a moment, he wanted to share a deeply personal second with her.

It was a form of torture, to be filled with all of these emotions. The way he missed Catarina despite her laying right there, the way he could never explain his feelings for her. He just felt them and no words did it justice. Even if he could try to find the words, it would not matter. To break the silence would break the peace that was there. What if she rejected him? This was one of the reasons he was getting so frustrated.

She liked him well enough to follow him along whenever he asked it of her, but did she love him enough to stay by his side even at the detriment of her other suitors? She never responds when Geordo tries to demonstrate his affection, but she does not either when he is the one to try. She accepts it all as mere niceties between friends, always comes up with a fiction in her head, and nothing seems to get across.

It is useless, Alan concludes. As upsetting it was to be left alone with his own thoughts, he would put up with it. She is here with him right now, she is going to be with him for a long while still and he still has a chance. To know she is safe by his side was more than enough. He would protect her soundlessly. He loved her with his hand on her sleeping hand. How long would that last? A few months ago, it was enough to see her at the academy, far away in the fields or amongst their group of friends. Now he could not go a full day without seeing her.

Bit by bit, he was understanding the motivations of his own heart and it was too much. He did not want to change Catarina or who she is, but he needed her more than he needed her love. Even as she peeled the layers of his person away until there was nothing left but that silence of understanding, it was never enough.  There was nothing he could show her that would evoke the same feeling he had for her. No matter how hard he tried, there was nothing that could make her feel the same way for him.

A thought struck him. One that scared him a little. Such a selfish wish surely would not be granted to him.

He ran his hand along her cheek. An action he had done before, yet somehow, in the inability to understand or save himself from these emotions, it was different. Different enough to cement in his mind the quest he would have to take.

There was only one way to guarantee that Catarina would be his, without the interference from his brother and all the other contenders. He needed to become the King of Sorcier, he needed the power that this title would bring him to keep her with him. By force, if necessary be.

The Crown was a service to people and country, his tutor used to say, but if it did not come with its own perks, his ancestors would not have died and killed for it. They all had their own motivations, regardless of the good or ill they promoted, and this is his. Catarina will be the arbiter of his reign. He is going to conquer it to conquer her, and mote it be.

For once Alan was going to do something selfish, and did he not deserve this? After all those trials and pain, after his disease and the scorn he faced, he finally found something worth keeping. There was nothing that would stop him now.

Alan kissed her forehead. A new dawn will rise in Sorcier.

No sé si a vosotras os pasa, pero llega un punto en invierno en el que la rutina se apodera de mi de tal modo que ya no puedo detenerme ni para pensar qué me conviene, qué es lo que necesito. Ya sabéis, lo de “escuchar a tu cuerpo”, saber que te está pidiendo, tanto en tema de alimentación como descanso y cuidado. El problema es que cuando acaba el frío, nos solemos enfrentar a la primavera con las huellas de todo lo que hicimos mal y todo lo que dejamos de hacer. Ese momento en que pensamos: “¿Y qué me había costado cuidarme un poquito?”

Este es uno de los motivos por los que en los últimos tiempos intento parar de vez en cuando y reflexionar, y también el motivo por el que la semana pasada fui capaz de desconectar de la trepidante realidad para cuidar mi rostro en cabina. El protocolo

Si mi intención era llevar a cabo un tratamiento reafirmante, el exhaustivo diagnóstico personalizado que llevó a cabo Encarna, la especialista que me trató, desveló la necesidad de seguir un protocolo diferente. Tal y como sospechaba, mi piel requería oxigenación y reequilibrio.

La experiencia ha sido tan positiva en todos los sentidos que os cuento en que consistió y el resultado para todas las que estáis dudando si vale la pena parar de vez en cuando para cuidarse, y ponerse en manos de un profesional.

Sabéis que siempre os digo que a la hora de llevar a cabo un tratamiento en cabina es tan importante como el protocolo y los productos, las manos, sensibilidad y experiencia de la persona que lo va a efectuar. En este sentido, supe desde el primer momento que podía confiar plenamente en el criterio y método a seguir, solo tuve que oír hablar a Encarna para adivinar su extraordinaria formación, vocación y su delicadeza en el trato de la piel.

Primero, una exfoliación suave, para a continuación llevar a cabo una oxigenación profunda dirigida a recuperar el manto hidrolipídico. Activos para equilibrar, mantener y regular el pH de la piel. El paso siguiente, limpiar los poros queratinizados y mitigar la sensibilidad. La suavidad y los productos con que trató mi piel hizo que tuviese la sensación de que reaccionaba, tonificándose, respondiendo y vivificándose. ¿Sabéis a lo que me refiero? ¿Habéis tenido esa sensación alguna vez?

Algo muy importante, los masajes no desplazaban nunca la piel, pero si trabajaba la musculatura. Todo un arte que muy pocos saben llevar a la práctica. ¿La finalidad? Repulpar, remodelar y aportar luz.

En uno de los momentos, mientras una mascarilla actuaba otra persona efectuó un largo masaje, reflexología podal, desde las rodillas. Una experiencia realmente maravillosa. Antes de acabar, Encarna realizó un drenaje linfático escote, cuello y rostro para mover y eliminar líquidos, algo que siempre he pensado es una de las bases principales de belleza.

¿Qué es el maquillaje de efectos especiales o FX?

Comencemos por la definición de la palabra “maquillaje”. El origen de este término se debe en sentido etimológico a “Maquillage” (pintura del rostro de los actores de teatro en el siglo XIX en Francia). Por otra parte, los efectos especiales son un conjunto de técnicas utilizadas en el mundo del espectáculo y en el ámbito audiovisual que no pueden ser obtenidas por medios normales, como por ejemplo un viaje al espacio o la transformación de un hombre en hombre lobo. A menudo se realizan maquillajes que necesitan volumen o producir impresiones exactas, esto muchas veces no se puede lograr con claroscuros, la base del maquillaje teatral y social, y por ende es necesario experimentar con distintas cosas, como prótesis y/o máscaras con mecanismos (animatrónica). El maquillaje FX es aplicado a un ser humano para darle características animales o fantásticas, envejecerlo, darle un aspecto de zombie o monstruo e incluso reproducir heridas, sangre y quemaduras.

¿Cuáles películas fueron las primeras en presentar actores personificados con maquillaje FX?

Se considera a Nosferatu de F.W. Munrau en 1921 como la primera, con el uso de dientes postizos y material para hacer orejas puntiagudas y exagerar rasgos faciales. 

¿En qué géneros del cine se utiliza?

El maquillaje FX no sólo se utiliza en películas de terror, fantasía ciencia ficción, también se puede utilizar en películas de drama, misterio, acción, romance, etc.. es decir, el uso de estas técnicas no está supeditado a lo sobrenatural.

En la industria, ¿Cómo se premia a los maquillistas?

 En ceremonias de premios de cine y televisión, suele existir la categoría de “Mejor maquillaje y peinado”. Un ejemplo son los Oscars, los BAFTA y los European Film Awards. La industria del maquillaje también tiene sus propias ceremonias donde premian a maquillistas que trabajan en el medio audiovisual en diferentes categorías. El más reconocido es el Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards

 ¿Qué materiales se utilizan en el maquillaje FX?

 - Prostéticos: Es la utilización de uno o varios materiales para llevar a cabo un cambio visual, a través de aplicar, difuminar, pintar ó maquillar, sobre la piel de la persona. Los materiales podrí­an ser: foam látex, hule, plástico, gelatina, u otros.

 - Derma Wax: Cera suave aplicada sobre la cara de un cadáver para dar un efecto deteriorado y rosado al despertar. También de gran utilidad para  reconstrucción de mandí­bulas y órbitas conservando el efecto de 3D

 - Sobrantes de Material: Sobrantes de materiales con vista orgánica, de proyectos que involucren látex, gelatina, o vinyl.

 - Silicón: Producto derivado del silicio, con base quí­mica. Utilizado sobre todo para crear moldes, piel sintética y adhesivos.

 - Espuma de Poliuretano: Es un producto quí­mico que se presenta en dos partes. Un catalizador es agregado a una base, se mezclan, se ponen dentro de un (molde) y magia, se espuma (expande). Esta es una forma económica de crear cuerpos. Existe rí­gida y flexible.

- Hot Glue: Un adhesivo termofusible de fácil manejo, que puede ser calentado hasta quedar lí­quido. A diferencia del látex, el hot glue puede volverse a utilizar.

 - Látex Natural: Es el caucho extraí­do del árbol del hule. Utilizado para guantes quirúrgicos y máscaras.

- Foam Látex (espuma de látex): El material por excelencia del la industria de maquillaje de efectos especiales.

 - Gelatina: Antes de que el silicón y el hot glue existieran, este era “el” material para efectos de piel y carne translúcida.

 - Sangre Falsa: Es una mezcla que tiene todas las propiedades fí­sicas de la sangre real, material de uso diario en el mundo del cine.

 - Fibra de Vidrio: Son mallas de fibra de vidrio, que al combinarse con resina forman armazones y piezas de gran resistencia. Esta se puede pigmentar, lijar, perforar, etc.

 - Molde: Contenedor de diversos materiales como alginato, yeso, ultracal, silicón, etc. Utilizado para reproducir piezas.

¿Cuándo y quién fundó la primera tienda o escuela de maquillaje FX en Guadalajara?

 Guillermo del Toro junto con Rigoberto Mora fundó Necropia, un taller de efectos especiales que llegó a cubrir un área de la cinematografía mexicana que estaba abandonada a mediados de los ochenta. Bertha Navarro, productora que ha trabajado con Del Toro desde su primera película, recuerda los inicios de esa compañía: “Guillermo aprendió porque sabía que en México, para el cine que él quería hacer, no había personas que hicieran transformaciones de maquillaje, y fue increíble”. Después de filmar sus cortometrajes Doña Lupe (1985) y Geometría (1987), Del Toro se involucró en la industria nacional a través de Necropia.

¿De dónde consiguen los materiales para trabajar los maquillistas de la ciudad?

 El mayor proveedor de materiales es Maya Makeup, una empresa que también ofrece servicios de maquillaje FX. La otra opción son tiendas de disfraces más pequeñas localizadas en distintos puntos del Centro Histórico.

 ¿Hay universidades en Guadalajara que ofrezcan la carrera en maquillaje FX?

No las hay. El CAAV y el CEC ofrecen cursos por la tarde y maquillistas independientes ofrecen talleres ocasionales. Maya Makeup y el estudio Cara Mia ofrecen cursos especializados.
