Late yesterday afternoon Lil and I took a colander, put Bluebell the Spoodle on a lead (good for her training) and went foraging, around our garden! I’ve designed the garden this way, there are Food Hedges to forage in and plants, shrubs and trees dotted about the garden where the conditions suit them best. This is Tasmania lancolata, commonly known as Mountain Pepper or Tasmania Pepperberry. This year the shrub is laden with big black shiny pepperberries, the best season we have had so far. It was lovely to wake up this morning and see the Tasmanian Pepperberry branches in a jug, a wonderful reminder of time yesterday. Would you like to join me? And just like that we're back to days spent around the house and daily walks. I'd just started to get into a rhythm of classes and coffee dates when we went into lockdown and now it feels a lot like those first few weeks after R was born. . I'm trying to embrace this new simpler life. We're lucky to have a garden where we can enjoy the spring sunshine and the good weather has meant we can take long walks every day. I'm also appreciating the things we have - less consumerism is always good. . Everything feels uncertain at the moment but I'm trying to embrace the positives. 4th May 2023. A spare chair, a quilt for the daybed and my magic basket that shifts from the little table on the veranda (my desk) to the chair next to it and back again several times a day. I say magical because sometimes it feels like Mary Poppins bottomless carpet bag. Scissors, hand written notes to myself, cards, samples, invoices, string! Click on the link in my bio to download it. • Henhouse made completely from reclaimed building materials- all saved from going to landfill or the bonfire. • Just to be clear the photo of scrappy grass is what the Quince Orchard looked like when we first came to Fairy Wren Cottage. Before my injury, I would mow a huge love heart shape into the centre of the what would one day be the Quince Orchard. Why mow the shape of a love heart into the grass? I mowed it for L❤️VE, for those passed, if they were looking down from the sky they would see this huge love heart radiating love for them. I mowed it for the living, for L❤️VE. To remind people of love. One day a local bloke stopped his ute and asked me why I always mowed a huge love heart shape in the grass. I asked how it made him feel. He said it always made him smile. Goal accomplished. And I mowed that L❤️VE heart for the land, a message of love and care. • Now you can really see what goes on in my head, lots of gardening dreams. Sharing beauty. I've been a little quiet on here the last few weeks as we've pretty much spent every day hiding indoors and out of the terrible weather. If you watch my stories you'll know that we live in a little village just above Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. Even though we live far up from the river we've had sandbags out the last two weekends to divert the water pouring down from the moors behind our house. Seeing first hand homes and businesses flooding has been awful, but it's been incredible how the community has pulled together. Whilst the weather doesn't look to be improving much, we took a much needed trip out today to meet with friends for coffee. It's amazing how quickly our babies are growing! R is now grabbing everything she can get her little hands on, her eyes taking in as much as she can and even starting to roll (which took us all by surprise). What a foggy frosty start to the day. Despite the cold we headed out and managed to go on our first solo trip to Manchester on the train. It's the first time I've been to Manchester since I packed up my desk and started mat leave back in October so it felt strange walking to the office, this time with a pram and little R gazing up at me. . I felt so guilty that I spent a lot of the day catching up with colleagues rather than giving R my full attention. But it was also nice to start thinking about work things as well. Stephen posted a video to Instagram: Honeybee has a new dance step! She is “drilling” for slugs and bugs it is what ducks naturally do and it’s the reason they are head of pest control in our #permaculture garden. Two things: 1. Hopefully the worms out smart Honeybee and she doesn’t find any while drilling. 2. There were poppies in this garden bed and the crop to follow was flax (you can just see some little flax seedlings near Honeybee). Lil had planted a flax crop in the hope of growing some flax and being able to harvest and spin it with the final outcome being making something to wear from the spun flax. Unfortunately the flax seedlings kept disappearing! Yes...we were all looking at Honeybee, but it didn’t make sense, she doesn’t like to eat the flax seedlings. Turns out one tiny unassuming little free range King Quail (the size of a sparrow) who is looking rather plump these days has been eating the flax!!! This morning we had a powercut. There was something quite soothing about laying in bed with candles lit while the dawn slowly seeped through the clouds outside. Despite the grey skies I'm feeling pretty awesome today. Managed to survive a solo morning, getting up early to get the bus to Hebden Bridge (getting showered, eating breakfast and getting out the house with a baby can be a challenge) and loved our first session of baby massage.
