Something in the air

There is something in the air, some soft smelling scent of a strange blossom, but how could that be, there are none here in my immediate vicinity. I leave my seat on our Indian-red sofa, (being South Asian), and venture out to the small deck, now crowded with the landlord's cheap rattan chairs which we have yet to discard, and of course, my wife's plants. The smell seems to be coming from here, though the plants produce nothing olfactory, they are plainly for décor. The rubber plant, which has suffered much recently and drooped in water-starved misery now holds its leaves aloft like offerings to the sweet-scented night. Ah, I forgot, a man arrived in the afternoon to repair the plywood screen that conceals us from the apartment next door. As he removed the water-rotted wood, I glimpsed a nest on the balcony opposite, with two milkwhite eggs in the midst of months of excrement. And as I sit comfortably in this pale orange night, I hear the frenzied flutter of wings which reminds me of the zigzag approach of a flying cockroach, but there is a distinct featheriness in this sound that dispels any hint of the unwelcome insect. The pigeons fall silent behind the screen and surveying this littlest of gardens, and inhaling again, completely, that bewitching smell whose origin is veiled, I realise that I am happy.

Friday blessings A thought I had tonight. I've been seriously hard on myself for quite some time. Not working hard enough, not likeable enough. Could be a better parent, son, friend, worker. Should be a better person. Tonight though, I git some welcome good news (insurance company wants to give me twice what I expected for my trusty, old, well-used Malibu). I started at this, and kept thinking. What other good news have I heard lately? This week alone, my boss handed me a good bottle of bourbon for helping him out while he was away (I thought I was just doing what I should), and a work colleague I've known for a decade gave me two very thoughtful gifts: an Amazon card for Christmas and recognition that she values me as a friend that always supports her work. I used the card to pick up these two musical gems. #LittleFictions is very new, #CrookedRain a tad older. Both were special to me, and now even more so. That thought I had? It went something like this: Even when it feels like I'm standing in the middle of a pile of s@#*, there are always reasons to be #grateful. A day late, a dollar [longer], and I'm sure I'll start beatimg myself up again tomorrow anyway. But for tonight, it's time to chill and appreciate how this week turned out, at least. #blessings Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

Got the new #Elbow album #LittleFictions on heavy rotation these days. Elbow is one of those bands which I am strongly attracted to, but still haven't got totally under my skin. This album is full of little gems and beautiful passages, and somehow, close to being 40, the lyrics have a very clear ressonance for me. These are adult lyrics for adults living adult lives.
