pythor is so so good. how did they hit it out of the park with their SEASON 1 villain from the very start he’s delightfully terrible. hi small child. you have no friends? ha cringe. i too have no friends. i promise i’m definitely not going to be using you and implying i’m going to eat you you’re just a baby and i’ll help you steal candy. this is a mutually beneficial arrangement. sure kid you go vent your oddly specific grudge against your unc. meanwhile i will also vent my oddly specific grudge and resurrect the accurséd beast that wants to eat everything. despite being the only serpentine with an inch of situational and self awareness i will plan no further ahead. this will end universally well and i will never regret bringing her to life. it’s feminism. what do you mean “i” am a part of “everything” sounds fake

obsessed with how baffled wu is about the nindroid thing. he finally shows up with garmadon again and in the background of kai’s overreaction (and garmadon eagerly having beef with a fifteen year old) im just imagining nya and jay having to explain what robots are to this thousand year old man. he stops his whole explanation of why garmadon’s there twice to go “wait, zane’s a what” and then “did you say the falcon was…. programmed?” wu, who’s spent the last year trying to comfort zane for his lack of memories and not fitting in, coming back after being away for like… a week? maybe two??? and suddenly zane’s TOTALLY fine and super excited to show his surrogate father figure how he can turn on the ability to be funny. and his mystical connection with his bird is just like, bluetooth. meanwhile mr. impliedimmortality over here has no idea what a circuit is and just thinks the bounty is neat

rewatched the pilots… i miss old jay so much agshdjdj. he sucks so bad. he was completely unhelpful in half the fights but also was the first person to figure out spinjitzu. he spends half the second episode unable to speak bc cole bonked him on the mouth. he’s just some fuckin guy who showed up and i love it

cole is the kind of only child who actually wished he had siblings. jay is the kind of only child where that never once crossed his mind (especially not that he’d admit). kai and nya tried to destroy each other at least thrice in the last year

i love how bewildered zane is in the pilots. everyone’s personalities are so clearly work-in-progress and they’re leading into more generic four/five man band alignments but in the very beginning he’s so far from The Smart One and it’s so dear to me. he’s so happy to be here. he doesn’t really know what he wants yet and he doesn’t have any idea what to expect but he’s got some friends he can help and protect and that’s enough for him

okay me and the bro watched exactly one episode of s1 bc. busy. but holy SHIT losing my mind over how often they just. animate the wrong character speaking. episode one. episode ONE. who fucked up here was it smthn in the recording booth and the animators were just following orders to make it match the script?? did the animators fuck it up??? was it a last minute change???? cole isn’t even IN the green ninja prophecy scene until the last few shots despite commandeering kai’s mouth to make some quips. kai’s so fixated on being the best ninja he’s not even noticing that he’s powerful enough to voice everyone else on the team without even breaking a sweat

also unrelated but ive been dying to talk about this for the past several weeks and finally got around to typing something out so .

we are feeling things about poorly written relationships that couldve been really interesting in the house tonight

i am right there with you for the fascination with badly written relationships. i spent the last week arguing to my friend about why the love triangle, while the most insufferable thing imaginable shipping-wise, has the potential to be utterly fascinating from a character perspective so while i do not have this particular brand of brainrot (yet. i have not stewed on this yet but OH I KNOW WHERE YOURE COMING FROM)... oh ninjago writers how did you manage to make the most interesting ~big bad villain~ imaginable somehow all by accident and how is every single decision made about him akin to ramming headfirst into a wall

addendum to my s8 thoughts, real quick. this one is short i promise.

1) the ninjago timeline continues to elude me. i was wrong about lloyd's age when the great devourer came and murdered everybody. he was still 8 then so it makes even LESS sense

2) i think its REALLY funny that harumi's parents are like "omg harumi you cant date the green ninja youre ROYALTY!!!!" like there is literally anybody else she can date by that logic. frankly lloyd is her only option if you're going by status. he is literally the green ninja and leads the ninja that have saved ninjago like a thousand times and if you want to count it his dad is a lord. the title is self imposed probably but he did, notably, take over ninjago city at one point before this whole thing. so like if she cant date lloyd who the heck CAN she date

even the land itself does not know. it only gets worse as time goes on... we keep making the short term even more confusing at this point i'm committed to the idea its like 200 years or less and keeps lying to itself. the fossils are just there for funsies. the FSM was having a laugh. wu ages by steven universe rules and looks older now bc he wanted people to take him seriously and looked disproportionately young when their parents were around bc he wanted friends.

.... YEAH??? holy shit. cmon weird self-insert oc parents what is the goal there. lord garmadon IS an actual title according to im pretty sure s4 so like. emperor whatever are you worried he's a bad influence. bc i'm pretty sure that's the exact opposite of your problem here

ive been having lots of fun liveblogging my return to ninjago to one of my friends but this is a genuine question. im inclined to say yes but im also open to other possibilities

YES YES YES i think he absolutely would. i think he’s the only one of the brothers who knows how to sew and he would hold it over wu.

ok finished season one of ninjago. yes i am shirking more important duties but also thats a lie because whats more important than ninjago.

anyways like 8-10 years ago me was so right zane is literally perfect and i would both kill and die for him. lloyd has also been promoted to the favorite characters. i also have a feeling that im going to get extremely attached to garmadon later given my most recent track record of favorite characters (aka mildly to extremely sad old men with children).

everybody is great though i love them all dearly. im honestly kind of shocked they gave nya something to do so early in the series so feminism win!!

im... also kind of surprised at how little i remember. i think part of this is that i only ever watched the series on cable so the episodes would air out of order and im not sure i caught a ton of the first season. i also keep getting random memory flashes of things that happen later in the series so im extremely excited to get to some of those (~ten minutes ago i frantically messaged one of my sisters asking if there was a giant green hairy eyeball in ninjago or if i was going insane)

but yes im having a lot of fun i do love getting into very long series because you have so much to look forward to for a long while

holy crap yesssss join me. how are you having the exact same experience as me i was ALL zane when i watched as a kid and now that i’m getting into it again,, lloyd and garmadon,,, the child who’s a tragedy magnet and the depressingly fascinating old man,,, oof. there’s one particular scene that i’m desperate to make a comic of but im so worried i’ll never get around to it,, what a duo. they only get better (and then so much worse) also SAME i keep second guessing what i remember this show is so bonkers literally anything could be canon. i’m so glad you’re having fun im having just as much >:]

OH ANOTHER THING I FORGOT TO MENTION: they put a bunch of meta jokes in this season but much to my surprise most of them were actually... dare i say it... funny. like they werent just the generic "ha ha wink wink nudge nudge we know we're in a tv show" *looks at camera like on the office* meta jokes. i was astounded. i was delighted. they had an entire episode dedicated to the insanities that the ninjago newspaper deliverers go through every single day in regards to the apocalypse descending on ninjago city weekly and it was terribly funny.

!!!!! hell yeah!!!!!! literally nothing appeals to me more than seeing what life is like for regular people in a fictional world and i love when they actually explore it instead of just. making the main characters do normal jobs for a day. thats a whole different thing i LOVE seeing regular ass people interacting with wild shit i'm eh on people with wild powers interacting with normal stuff. the fact that the writers actually get how metahumor Works is so refreshing thank you lego television show for children. doing it like no one else

ok finished s2. thoughts:

number 1. zayne, lloyd, and garmedon definitely the lineup of favorite characters.

number 2. i hate. i hate misako. i hate her. i really hope she either a) gets some massive character development or b) never shows up in a relevant capacity again

number 3. lloyd deserves a break. please. please give him a break for five minutes let him win sometimes im not asking for much. pretty much all he did this season was lose.

number 4. much to my unsurprise i think i am a little bit deranged abt lloyd & garmadon. maybe later ill be able to string a coherent thought together but like man garmadon loved his son so much he literally overrode his more or less preprogrammed nature . head in hands . like the whole thing they had going on this season where they just . Really Do Not Want To Fight bc they love each other so much even though theyre destined to or whatever. like YES YES YESSSS i LOVE stories where the characters fight so bitterly against the fate the author has chosen for them.

number 5.

number 6. very glad to see dareth again after so many years. hes iconic hes a legend he is the moment

number 7. mentally i am not prepared for the cole/naya/jay love triangle that i distantly recall being a thing that i believe is coming up sometime in the possibly near future but at least itll never be weirder than whatever the heck was going on this season between misako and wu. i had completely forgotten that subplot was a thing and was taken so offguard when it came up

so yeah overall im having a very fun time and i am terribly excited to continue. for next season, i sincerely hope misako either gets her act together or stops being relevant, i want to see more stupid team bonding shenanigans, i desperately want some more of garmedon & lloyd, and also i would really like to see some more relationship development between various pairs of the crew. also also prayer circle that zayne does some more stuff this season 🙏 also also also. more alternate outfits please and thank you

heck yeah!!!! thankfully they do flesh out more the of the less focused dynamics in the new few seasons but Oh are you in for an experience,,, tysm for the update i’m on the edge of my seat.
