"There’s breaking news coming from Elsmere, Delaware where a student at Rutherford University was found dead in his dorm room. Twenty-two year old Andrew Holloway was discovered by his friends earlier this morning after Holloway was reportedly mia for the majority of the day. This is the third death to happen on Rutherford University’s campus in the last seven years, however at this time it’s believed that all deaths are unrelated. The circumstances around his death have not been disclosed to the public, though police urge everyone to stay calm and remind you all to stay safe by traveling in groups, remembering to lock your doors, and reporting anything you see that seems out of place. There’s always an instance that pulls back the veil on a community, a dividing moment in a once linear path. Sometimes they’re good, whether it be a sudden surge of funding into the local public schools or the times of change as a new, uncorrupt political leader takes hold of the podium. For Elsmere, this divide came in the shape of a storm.

The night of June 3rd, 2018 was like any other. A literal storm was upon our doors, the wind howling from outside of the dormitory windows at Rutherford University. A party was going down in building A, floor 5. The party was hosted by none other than campus golden boy and quarterback Andrew Holloway, his voice ringing through the air multiple times as he called for body shots. People came, people went. It was a normal Sunday night for the campus, the summer semester finally starting. The rest of the town did what they normally did. Some took the 12 minute drive out to Wilmington, others filled in their local pubs to watch sports. Many, however, called it a night, closing their eyes with the sound of the rain tapping on their window lulling them to sleep.

And then it was Monday. Average, the sun now shining as the calm settles back in from the storm. Stray leaves are all over the campus from the winds, the occasional twig on the concrete pathway. Some forced themselves to get out of bed, their hangovers pounding against their skull, others simply slept the day away. Or at least, they tried to but it wouldn’t last. 

Around 12:45 pm, multiple friends of Andrew’s met up after realizing he skipped first period. While this wasn’t unusual for most college students, it was for him. Andrew, the boy with the perfect attendance, the boy who never sleeps yet does everything flawlessly, the boy you saw running across campus without a single hair on his head misplaced after a night of partying wasn’t one to ever skip. Call after call, text after text, they tried to reach him to no avail. As the day grew later, the chance of this being a one off event seemed slimmer and slimmer. By 8 pm, the three friends were breaking into him room where they’d find the first stains of crimson, all leading to his bedroom.

News spread like a wildfire. By 8:30 pm, most of the campus already knew it, a crowd gathering around the emergency vehicles, the flashing of red and blue being the only thing you could see. Everyone awaited an answer, some sort of sight that he wasn’t okay but it’d never come. Instead, the sight of a stretcher would go viral on social media platforms such as Snapchat and Twitter, a public spectacle coming of the whole thing. The black fabric of a body bag was all people needed to know - Andrew Holloway was dead, and police were investigating it as a homicide.

In the moment, the town was spiraling. News outlets such as ABCnews, CNN, and FOX were broadcasting about the ordeal as everything began to unravel. His autopsy was released, following with the images being leaked onto social media, following the police reporting certain leads. A few arrests were made but the chargers were slowly dropped and it seemed as if justice would never come for Andrew Holloway.

And it didn’t. The night of June 3rd, 2019 marked a year after the last time Andrew had been seen alive. The town that had once rioted around him was nothing short of silent, the campus throwing a party in his honor after students hosted their own vigil for him in the middle of the campus. And in the middle of the party, the sounds of the music blaring through the walls of building A. floor 5, everyone knew. There would be no justice for Andrew Holloway, at least not now.
