OC Musings

So, I've been seeing all kinds of OCs lately, and I feel like I need to tweak one of mine. Mostly because the two I have been focusing on of late (outside Akagi, as I ramble through Eorzea), are Marshall and Rav. These two dorks here:

(Art by @/Pehrelli on Twitter) And the one I wonder if I need to tweak is actually Marshall. This picture, and the others I have of her are of her in her "civilian mode". She and Rav do have powersets and armor and fun stuff, but I need to nail down a solid design for their armor (I have an old armored Rav pic, but it's just his torso), and Marshall has had a few visual design tweaks as well. She has a bitchin' sword that is an energy blade that is a mash-up of the Tenchi-ken and a lightsaber, but the blade is flat/two dimensional instead of being a cylindrical beam. And her sword had been in kind of design limbo until my latest comm of her, where I sat down and fleshed it out.

Lookit that beauty (and Marshall's nice, too. ^_~). But yea, feels like I need to add... I dunno some gimmicks or something to her. Like, Rav has a couple gimmicks to him (hell, for a bit Marshall technically IS one of those LOL, and they DO have a combination mode), and visually he has the eyepiece and the gold stripes (Which was a neat little tweak from another commission from the original and I love it) and he also has a tattoo that glows, but it's covered at the moment. But aside from her choker and her sidebraid, I wonder if she's just too...plain? Like, I see all these crazy out there OCs that are like hybrid human-something else, or other beings entirely and I'm like...do I need to do more?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE these two. Absolutely fell back in love with them after getting some more recent art, and they have been in my consciousness, flitting about story snippets (some hastily scribbled down, some just notes connected to a song) for *literal years*. But, I dunno. What I probably need to do is save up and get some honest-to-goodness ref sheets down for them, to show off their other cool stuff. Armor design is tough, though.

But yea, I think I just needed to vent and get this off my chest, and maybe get some second opinions, should anyone have some insight. And also an excuse to talk about my OCs and show off arts. xD

Hey! So I was just thinking about how one of the tragedies of lost is how outside of a small sphere on tumblr, jack shephard is written off as a boring stereotypical white male “leader” type character. I just think that’s so sad because Jack really fundamentally...isn’t that, you know, and he’s just got way more going on. Do you have any thoughts on this lol??

oh my gosh, i remember when even back in lost fandom, the idea of liking, LIKING jack shephard was considered ridiculous. absurd. whomst. going back far enough on my blog, i’ve seen myself be Weirdly Defensive

now Hatred for jack tends to be like, annoyance and playful jabbing. at least in my experience since i parade in the chiller sections of the lost fandom

heck, liking jack is way more of a chore than hating him because it makes the parts where he’s Incredibly Frustrating even more painful to watch

but i digress

yeah its funny that. a lot of shows may have a blandy handsome mcstoic face whomst i cant tell what he looks like as their lead, with all the Interesting coming from characters next to him. now, jack is bland but in an endearing way. like he looks and behaves like he enjoys plain milk and saltines. that kinda bland

and jack is. conventionally attractive. all tall, strong and symmetrical. tho his face is interesting enough that i can tell what's going on. big brown eyes, for example. a thing i really really appreciate about jack is that he’s not stoic. think of how INSUFFERABLE his parts of lost would be if he was like -_-

in fact he’s the opposite, jack’s face works like he’s a sim testing out animations before each emotion. he honestly behaves like his actor is on cocaine

i think it’s true that jack’s eps can be boring from time to time... stranger in a strange land sucks so much because it’s not even interesting bad like fire + water, it’s so fucking boring. nobody cares nobody cares the writers don’t even caaaaare. but overall he’s not bad for a protagonist type. i don’t hate him

in fact i’ve grown to love him. for like, a long time now

but actually getting to the point u wrote to me, no, jack isn’t the typical blandy white guy protag hero guy. tho he is bland, and white, and a guy. and The Leader. despite all that, jack feels different. because lost in general subverts character archetypes. jack can’t handle not being in control but he emotionally collapses when he is. jack is a good hearted hero but he isn’t cool (also his voice sounds like a dentist drill which is Not What One Would Expect)

jack can’t be stoic. he seems like the voice of reason sometimes but it doesn’t always seem so reasonable (i’d say sayid is the true voice of reason). he’s been thrown into The Leader role because he’s a doctor. and he looks the part

and also he’s like a Huge Dork. he has such poor social skills, i LOVE it! listen to him talk, like, ever. but especially to women and he’s like. a weenie! he’s a weenie trapped in the body of a hero... whilst also being a hero, i wanna be clear, jack is at heart a very good person, he’s just also a fuck up. summed up lost there. he can be a condescending asshole sometimes. there are times when he’s an absolute cunt! so i do understand people who don’t like him. if i was watching lost atm, i’d probs be back to being annoyed at him. but lookit him objectively and it’s like “oh fuck, you have problems.... aw <3”

anyways. jack good. jack is also autistic and repressed bi, because it makes so much sense. also also fuck christian shephard, hope that heart attack hurt a lot

As I’ve noted in a little blurb before, we are getting tons of love for my UF bois!! You guys must really either want to see stuff about them or you really like my interpretation of them! 

(Also, AAAAHHH STOOOOPPP YOU GUYS ARE TOO SWEET!!!!!)

UF Sans/Red: The moment he laid eyes on you, before he ever really knew you, he thought that you were just amazing. There was no doubt for him that you were someone who was tough enough to withstand pain, after all, he had heard that tattoos could be painful. Red can really appreciate someone who can handle a lot of external pain, coming from where he has. It’s only natural then that he would gravitate to you, and when you start dating each other, he’s very much in love with how you seem so tough and loyal. However, when he starts to see that awkward side of you and how you can be a real goofball, he almost wants to breathe a sigh of relief. There was so much of you that seemed to be focused solely on being tough and rough-and-tumble that he worried that that was all there was to you. However, there’s nothing more that he appreciates than the fact that you can be you in this relationship. It’s really soothing to have someone who’s willing to be as tough as nails on the outside, but still not completely ruined by their tough exterior. Red really loves to mess around with you and try to get you to crack when you’re out in public with him so that other people know you’re just a couple of goofballs!

UF Papyrus/Fell: With Fell, he’s not so much caring about what you look like on the outside all the time, so long as you can prove you’re worth your salt. If you look tough, you need to actually be tough for him, and boy do you prove it. Not only can you look the part of someone who’s, dare he whisper it, bad to the bone (he wants to beat his skull on the wall for even thinking that), you can back it up with actual evidence that you are as tough as you look. He may not understand how tattoos work necessarily, but he gets that they can hurt, a lot when you get them. That alone makes you worthy of being his datemate, and he will certainly appreciate the matching imagery for the two of you! You’re both very tough, spiky kinds of people, but as he discovers later on, you both have massive soft spots for certain people and things. Fell isn’t one to let down his guard with anyone, but when you start to reveal that you’re a bit of a dork, he shows you, piece by piece, that he’s a bit of a dork as well. You two are going to get along just fine as you date, and he will make sure that you are well taken care of in this relationship. He’s perfectly fine with playing up the idea of “an asshole to the world, but sweet on his girl” mentality, regardless of who you are. He’ll treat you like royalty, all while looking like he’s ready to snap some necks at a moment’s notice from how gruff he appears.

I don’t know the extended Star Wars universe the way I used to? But this, okay, this makes me want that one AU.

The FAHC in ~spaaaace AU where they’re a crime syndicate or whatever with this Reputation because it’s rumored they have a Sith on their side, but no one is sure who it is.

Oh, sure. Everyone assumes it’s this Vagabond character because honestly, okay, but they’re super wrong.

The guy might have some faint link with the Force, maybe a knack with tech or something but nothing too out of the ordinary. (Just listen to him bitching at some stubborn gadget or one of their ships, Trevor over to the side not-so-secretly laughing at him because Ryan, no. You’ve got to treat them right, sweet talk them.)

Or maybe it’s Mogar because guy’s got a temper and is vicious in a fight, but again you’d be wrong.

The same goes for Jeremy and Alfredo, Trevor and Matt and something is definitely going on with Lindsay, or maybe she’s just Like That. (Who knows with Fiona, just don’t piss her off or she’ll make you regret it.)

Gavin’s a lucky fucker, and that makes some people reconsider him but he’s just like, lol, no.

Maybe it’s Ramsey? (How else would he keep these assholes in line if it’s not through the threat of a good old Force choking and the whatnot? But also wrong. Way, way wrong.)

No, the Sith is Patillo, okay.

Mild-mannered looking kind of guy, maybe got in over his head and owes some kind of debt that Ramsey’s got him trapped with.

You get people trying to befriend him hoping to get a way into the crew to bring them down from the inside?

And Jack okay, Jack seems to buy it, lets these bounty hunters and worse think they’re getting away with it, that he’s just that naive or stupid (both) and just when they think they’re gonna get a huge payday for bring the whole syndicate down Jack’s like, y’know.

Lookit what I have, dickbag, and out comes the light saber and this overwhelming pressure becaise as it turns out he’s pretty strong in the Force and oh, hey, nice try? But you’re going to die, and also, fuck off.

And when the asshole’s dead there’s Jack, good old mild-mannered Jack who looks so out of place with this bunch of cutthroat thieves and rogues.

Bitching at Ryan for something or other or looking the other way when the others are fucking with each other. (Snickering to himself when he pulls the lamest pranks using the Force - fucking pulls chairs out from under people and the whatnot and everyone like, Jack, pls.)

Like.

In the early days before they even know he’s a Sith, can you imagine? All the chaos and whatnot he’d cause just for the hell of it and no one suspecting him. (At first, but then Geoff notices how much Jack loses his shit when Gavin falls on his ass or Ryan goes off on a rant because something and is like HMMM.)

And then, you know.

The time they get caught by the baddies or whatever and the rescue party’s too far out to get there in time. Imminent Death and Jack is like well shit and breaks out the Sith powers to save them.

Afterward he’s all jazz hands and surprise, guys! :D??? (And also Concerned because Sith??? But they’re just like, you son of a bitch because finally, finally, they know who the culprit behind so many pranks and the whatnot is, does he have any idea how crazy it’s been making them???

Also, ~sekrit weapon and Geoff thinking it’s the funniest shit ever when someone thinks ginormous dork Ryan is a Sith, because wow no.
