Don't Miss America's only Loquat Festival March 21 in New Port Richey

The seventh annual Florida Loquat Festival will be held Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Frances Avenue Park (6156 Louisiana Avenue, 34653) in New Port Richey. This annual festival is hosted by Ecology Florida and Friendship Farms & Fare, with the support of the City of New Port Richey. The Florida Loquat festival is a learning and sharing event. Its goal is to expand knowledge and appreciation of the loquat tree and its fruit. There will be presentations on the cultivation of loquat trees, how to eat the loquat fruit, how to can it and cook with it, and recipes using loquats. It is the only festival in the U.S. celebrating the versatile loquat fruit. Loquat growers and those involved in the loquat food-production industry are expecting an average to above-average harvest this year, which suggests a well-stocked festival for 2020. Try and Buy Delicious Loquat Products There will be loquat jellies and jams, as well as many loquat fruits available at the 2020 Loquat Festival. Festival promoters are excited with the number of folks who have come forward to prepare and sell preserves and are expecting more canners and makers than ever before.

Westside Deli will offer samples of savory loquat dishes at the 2020 Loquat Festival.  Westside Deli is a favorite New Port Richey restaurant committed to using locally-grown, seasonal, organic produce whenever possible.   Most loquat products are designed to accentuate the fruit’s sweetness – as with the various preserves, cakes, cookies, and beverages.  Bob and Deb Morris, Westside’s proprietors, have another loquat story to tell – a savory one!   Education is an important part of the Loquat Festival An important part of the loquat festival is education. Presentations include instructions on the growing and cultivation of loquat trees, how to eat its fruit, and recipes based on loquats. The role of the loquat in sustainable farming and permaculture gardening, and the cultural context of this wonderful tree are covered also. Pete Kanaris, proprietor of Green Dreams Nursery, will address the role of fruit trees in a sustainable, comprehensive food system on residential properties at the Loquat Festival.

Get your very own Loquat Tree at the Festival A major feature of the festival is the trees, from seedlings and saplings to large trees. Green Dreams, is a major force in the sustainable food and culture movement, offering a wide assortment of organic fruit trees suitable for Florida growing. GreenDreams Nursery has been a mainstay of the festival for many years. As the festival's primary nursery, with its widest selection yet of high-quality named varieties of loquat trees.  There should be over 200 trees at the Loquat Festival for sale this year, with at least 150 coming from GreenDreams, including Premier, Golden Nugget, Bradenton, Oliver, Champagne, Sherry, and Yehuda varieties. Pete may also have the very popular Christmas loquat at the festival. Some entirely new varieties will be available at the festival this year in limited numbers.  As with all other products at the festival, please come early for the best selection and highest volume.   Most of the grafted trees from GreenDreams have fruit on them this year. 3-gallon trees are 3-4 feet tall and slim (for $45).  7-gallon trees are 4-6 feet tall and full (for $65).  GreenDreams will also have seedlings (for $5).

Specialty Loquat Beverages return to the 2020 Festival Locally made loquat tea from The White Heron Tea and Gifts will return to this year’s Loquat Festival.  Loquat tea has long been a staple in Asia, and the downtown New Port Richey tea company has developed a delicious local version of this international classic.  Kelly Hackman, the proprietor of the White Heron has won a silver award with her loquat tea at a 2019 international tea competition. Kelly is one of only three Certified Tea Specialists through the World Tea Academy in Florida and is the only one in the Tampa Bay area.  Kelly will also have loquat leaves, specially prepared for brewing loquat tea. Learn the Process of Making Loquat Tea and Loquat Beer Kelly Maki-Hackman will give background information and insight into what goes into making her famous loquat tea.  She will also tell us about the brewing process for another one-of-a-kind loquat beverage, available only in New Port Richey: Loquat Beer.

The Cotee River Brewing Company will be featuring Loquat Beer for the Festival and contributing $1 for each beer sold. spooky_kid / Pixabay "Besides the fun and festive features of enjoying our local loquat beer, a great added benefit of hoisting a mug of Cotee River Brewing’s Loquat Beer is the brewery’s contribution of $1 for each beer sold to the Florida Loquat Festival," Kelly said. The Cotee River Brewing Company in downtown New Port Richey will be featuring Loquat Beer. Bryan Hackman, the proprietor, is working with local growers to produce this one-of-a-kind brew.  While beer is not served at the festival due to City restrictions, there will be plenty available just a few blocks away at this delightful brewpub.

The show includes local artist, Andrea Hiotis.  Andrea will have a wide selection of paintings and note cards featuring loquats. The Seventh Annual Loquat Literary Festival The Florida Loquat Festival seeks one-page poetry or prose submissions for a reading held at Frances Avenue Park in New Port Richey, Florida on March 21, 2020. All styles and forms are welcomed as long as loquats are the subject or central image.

Authors are invited to read at the event in beautiful Frances Avenue Park and will be published in the annual chapbook, Leaves of Loquat. Writers may submit up to three poems in a single document. Include brief bio sharing your writing experience/ publications, if any, to dechant@usf.edu. “To the best of our knowledge, the Florida Loquat Festival in New Port Richey, Florida is the only loquat festival in the United States of America. There are loquat festivals in other parts of the world, including China and Japan, but so far we’ve not learned of any others in the USA,” said Dell deChant, one of the event's organizers.
