Kingsguard of King Viserys I Targaryen
Tumblr media
The Kingsguard is a brotherhood founded during the reign of Aegon I the Conqueror, suggested by queen Visenya. Seven of the finest knights of the realm chosen by the king for his protection, known as "white swords" or "white cloaks" for their robes, this is a highly respected brotherhood of high authority, a lifelong oath that involves serving until death, a vow of chastity and also the renunciation of any title or land (yet some kingsguards have received or held titles and honors).

In charge of protecting the king's physical integrity, as well as his weaknesses and secrets. They may be assigned as sworn shield [escort and protector] of a member of the royal family or any person the king commands.
Tumblr media
The leader of this brotherhood holds the title of "Commander of the Kingsguard", which carries with it a seat on the king's Small Council, while the remaining six brothers have no difference in rank beyond the trust and reputation they build for themselves.

Commanders of the Kingsguard during the reign of Viserys I Targaryen
Tumblr media
Ser Ryam Redwyne
Tumblr media
Lord Commander Ser Ryam Redwyne, took the white cloak during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, attaining the position of Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Hand of the King [for a short period], after the accession of Viserys I Targaryen he retained his position as Lord Commander and sworn shield of the king until his death.
Tumblr media
Ser Harrold Westerling
Tumblr media
Lord Commander Ser Harrold Westerling, like his predecessor took the white cloak during the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen and after the ascension of Viserys I Targaryen served as sworn shield of princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, until his appointment as Lord Commander, becoming sworn shield of the king.

Brothers of the Kingsguard

Ser Criston Cole
Tumblr media
Ser Criston Cole, after the death of the Lord Commander Ser Ryam Redwyne, one of the white cloaks was left free so soon it was sought who would occupy it, the one in charge of selecting the knight who would receive this honor was none other than the princess of Dragonstone and heir to the throne, Rhaenyra Targaryen. After being appointed kingsguard by the princess, Ser Criston was eventually assigned as the crown princess' sworn shield, until the celebration of the wedding of the princess after which Ser Criston would become sworn shield of queen Alicent Hightower.
Tumblr media
Ser Steffon Darklyn
Tumblr media
Ser Steffon Darklyn, of the kingsguard of king Viserys I Targaryen, apparently the most senior knight of the brotherhood after Lord Commander Ser Harrold Westerling, this assumption is possible because during the absence of the Lord Commander, who had been sent to Dragonstone along with Ser Criston Cole to escort the Hand of the king, Ser Otto Hightower sent to deal with the king's brother, prince Daemon Targaryen, who was occupying the island without authorization. It is Ser Steffon who informs the king of the princess's return and who escorts her to the monarch's chambers. And it would have been Ser Steffon the sworn shield of princess Rhaenyra Targaryen after Ser Harrold Westerling was appointed Lord Commander and before Ser Criston gained the trust of the princess.
Tumblr media
Ser Arryk Cargyll
Tumblr media
Ser Arryk Cargyll, kingsguard to king Viserys I Targaryen along with his twin brother Ser Erryk Cargyll, appears to perform the duties of an aide-de-camp or secondary escort as he is constantly seen guarding the doors of the room where the king is at the time. It is likely that he and his brother take it upon themselves to post themselves in front of the doors, mainly of the king's bedchamber or Small Council, as after a council session he can be seen escorting the king and queen to the monarch's chambers.

Ser Erryk Cargyll
Tumblr media
Ser Erryk Cargyll, kingsguard of king Viserys I Targaryen along with his twin brother Ser Arryk Cargyll, can be seen at the funeral of queen Aemma Arryn, along with his other brothers, and is probably who accompanies his brother guarding the doors of the room in which the king is at the time.
Tumblr media
Ser Lorent Marbrand
Tumblr media
Ser Lorent Marbrand, is a kingsguard of king Viserys I Targaryen, it is not known at what time he entered the brotherhood but it is estimated that it was at some point in the reign of Viserys I, after the fight that caused the dismissal of ser Harwin Strong of the city guard, princess Rhaenyra left the Red Keep and settled with his family in Dragonstone accompanied by the kingsguards, Ser Steffon Darklyn and Ser Lorent Marbrand.
Tumblr media
Ser Willis Fell
Ser Willis Fell, kingsguard to king Viserys I Targaryen, possible sworn shield of queen Alicent Hightower, before Ser Criston Cole assumed that role.
Tumblr media
Ser Rickard Thorne
Ser Rickard Thorne, kingsguard to king Viserys I Targaryen, possible sworn shield of queen Alicent Hightower, before Ser Criston Cole assumed that role.
Tumblr media
Regarding how king Viserys I Targaryen organized his kingsguard, we can assume that he kept the Lord Commander as his sworn shield, as well as assigning the same position to two other white cloaks to protect queen Alicent Hightower and princess Rhaenyra, while the remaining four members seem to serve as a kind of secondary escort that is stationed at the entrances of the rooms where the king is [no matter where they are]. Over the years it seems that princess Rhaenyra no longer has her own sworn shield, while a white cloak accompanies the little princes, Aegon, Aemond, Jacaerys and Lucaerys, during their training sessions both with their dragons in the DragonsPit and with their swords in the courtyard of the Red Keep.
