honestly, Darkar has some horror potential. after seeing Layla suffering from nightmares, Pixies being depressed and traumatized after being captured and Winx being scared to shit while moving around his castle I’m pretty sure Straffi just didn’t manage to express how actually scary this character was, the cartoon format just couldn’t let him to.

like, Darkar is literally a cursed skeleton mummified inside of blood-stained rusty armor, and he lives in eldritch dark catacombs filled with tar, creepy old relics and ancient occult stuff. just a “cartoonish dark fantasy tradition”? or some cave-core inspired horror stuff. from the darkest corners of mine systems you can be lost at and never go back to surface, like in some legends about speleotourists stuck in catacombs.

bet Darkar’s castle is plenty of ashes and random bones. bet there’s old blood stains and written runes and traces of unknown rituals in back rooms, and these rooms are filled with garbage and rusty stuff, like tons, tons and tons of armour he’s collecting for some reason. bet he’s mostly silent, but when he opens his mouth a bunch of roaches or centipedes crawl out from there. and when he walks he does it like a marionette or an animated corpse. he probably dissapears after you move your flashlight off him and hides among other armour stands in one of filled and garbaged rooms. or just stands in corridors without any move until you turn away or the lights on torches is suddenly blown off. you would hear a screech of his claws somewhere nearby when you’re trying to light up a match for your suddenly gone off oil lamp. and you’ll realise that it’s too late when you feel something deadly cold right behind you in pitch darkness.

to be honest he’s hella creepy and he literally deserves some sort of adaptation. Blair Witch-like, maybe some Gonjiam Haunted Asylum or Grave Encounters tradition. some creepy cave stuff like in Amnesia Rebirth, especially with his minions (also dead mummified corpses of unrecognized animals). imagine being Bloom in last episodes, waking up in a dark room, being handcuffed to a floor with bloody pentagram on it and seeing almost nothing except a goddamn pile of rusty armor looking right at you.

that kind of adaptation would be so dope.

Lord Darkar, The Shadow Phoenix

When the Magic Dimension was created, scholars believe that it mirrored another dimension called Achlys.  It is thought that because that dimension was dying out, with magical cores of both planets and people imploding and dying, the Great Dragon created a new dimension for magic to thrive – the Magic Dimension.

Lord Darkar was once a King, or a high standing noble, in Achlys.  He had extreme power over shadows and darkness, however, he was loyal and compassionate to those around him.  However, as his kingdom was dying and his wife’s magic beginning to kill her, he made a deal with the Moirai (the ancient deities of Fate) that would allow him to save his dying wife.  In this exchange, he had to give up his mortal body in order for him to absorb magical energy.  When he tried to absorb his wife’s magical core, it ultimately destabilised and killed her, and Darker was unable to heal her injuries.

His wife’s death is what saw his descent into madness and what gained him his reputation for being the Prince of Darkness and the opposite to the Great Dragon. In order to bring back his wife, Darkar tried absorbing as many magical cores as he could in Achlys to try and bring his wife back from the dead. His rampage, along with the destabilisation of Achlys saw the complete genocide of the Dimension, with only Darkar left.  Once he was the only living sole in Achlys, he opened a portal to the magical dimension, believing the Great Dragon’s Flame would be able to revive his wife – but this effort put him in stasis until the Dragon Flame’s instability in Bloom awakened him.

Darkar is unable to feel anything but negative emotions, and thrives on the hatred and vulnerability of others.  While his powers are based on shadow magic, he also has strong transformative abilities such as being able to transform himself into the Phoenix and occasionally other people.  He is also able to create “shadow monsters” from those whose magical core he has absorbed.  Further he is able to influence others greatly, when they let him into their mind.  Darker is well versed in magical rituals and rights, often using these to enhance his magic.

Darkar’s connection to Achlys and his deal with the Moirai elevated him to a higher-level transformation – essentially making him indestructible.  The Moirai, through their ritual made him the deity of Pure Darkness, in order to bring balance to the Pure Light that the Great Dragon bought. Darkar despises that he cannot die and be with his wife, and because of this he will bring destruction to everything until he can bring her back.

For some reason, Icy expected more from Darkar and she clearly refers to herself alone... Which is why maybe some people thought she had something for Darkar as well? In the Cinelume dialogue, she uses "we" instead, even for the second line.

"I'm sorry, you thought wrong!"

How sad, Cinelume removed Darkar's fake apology!

Made some minor adjustments to Darkar for my winx club thingy, including elongating his arms to make it more believable from a physiology standpoint for him to transition to walking on all fours if he wanted to (because I think the concept of him flying into a rage and scuttling towards someone at high speeds like that would be horrifying), making his neck longer, and adding some sinew to him.

Wanted to try and push some of the body horror elements more.

Decided to do some quick practices drawing him in different positions too. I need to work on this kind of anatomy more.
