the first eurovision semifinals are airing in an hour and i will be liveblogging them so blacklist "eurovision 2023" if you hate joy
as repeatedly stated, this may be a spn sideblog (more of a star trek one recently tbf) but eurovision is and always will be my #1 fandom
#eurovision 2023#we're not competing tonight but i'll be working on thurs so i prob won't be able to liveblog then#not that i'm all that excited about our entry#it's cute and i like diljá but we have yet to repeat the heights we reached in 2020#(the year we would have won i will die on this hill)#anyway lets not pretend like loreen isn't gonna sweep this year#i'm gonna enjoy the competition anyway even if there's a foregone conclusion#oops can you tell from these tags i'm already drunk from pregaming

Btw Rai's main news segment aired a report on Eurovision 2023 and of course they talked mostly about Marco and the top 2 and Loreen and like...I'm absolutely speechless at how much of a perfect full circle this is for me Because even if I didn't watch ESC in 2012 I have this ancestral memory of watching part of her performance of Euphoria on the tv news probably the day after the final hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh full closure yall, I got full closure T-T
#loreen#eurovision 2023#esc sweden#eurovision song contest#I think it was the moment where she's crouching before the dancer sweeps her up#I didn't even know who she was and yet she never left the back of my brain :"

A thought on returning winners
So I had entirely forgotten that Norway had also sent a winner back to Eurovision, namely possible vampire (the man DOES NOT AGE!) Alexander Rybak
This was his entry in 2018
youtube
And this was his winning entry in 2009
youtube
So what sets this apart from Sweden’s re-entering Loreen (because here too Norway entered two EN songs and the two entries were about a decade apart)?
1. Rybak’s two songs feel very different from each other, including in terms of subject-matter and staging (here are Loreen’s performances from 2023 and 2012, for context - I don’t think Tattoo deserves the “Euphoria 2.0″ tag it’s been getting but they are much more similar overall):
youtube
youtube
2. There wasn’t the feeling with Rybak’s entry that another Norwegian victory was a foregone conclusion - it felt more like he was just coming back with a fun number and nothing to prove, possibly because Norway have only won Eurovision 3 times! When Rybak was entered again in 2018, Norway had finished last in the Eurovision final more than any other country and (along with Austria) received the most "nul points". Compare that with Sweden, who had won 6 times by the time Loreen was entered again, have only ever come last on two occasions (1963 and 1977) and rarely finish outside the top 7.
3. I don’t know if this was just poor editing (or malicious editing???) on the part of the programmers (apparently she and Kaarija are in fact friends, which you would never have guessed from watching any of the shows!!) but at no point did Loreen come across as even vaguely approachable. While everyone else was making friends and having fun, it felt like she was sweeping in to win the whole thing and nothing else mattered. I know it’s a competition, but it...is also supposed to be fun? Rybak looked like he was genuinely enjoying himself and happy to be back. He could have been all “I won it before and I’m here to win it again” but he wasn’t and I think people like and respect him more for it...
In conclusion, now that we’ve had three countries (Ireland being the third - I haven’t included Johnny Logan in this commentary as he was before my time - others may be able to provide more insight?) play this card, I genuinely think we should retire it - returning artists, yes; returning winners, no.

Just watched the swedish eurovision qualifier and damn if Loreen isn't going to sweep the whole thing again
#eurovision#euphoria is iconic but this is probably just as good#she has a way of belting out that just shakes your soul in such a profound way#and a star status + aesthetic that is unique#and it's been long enough since euphoria for it to work again

hiiii lysssss I’ve been mostly offline for the last week but I finally managed to get most of my python code to work but now I can’t figure out how to plot it and I still need to introduce a resetting rate and I have no idea how so I’m loosing my mind a little but it’s fine everything is fine <- said through gritted teeth
also I found a masters program I really love but I would have to pay wayyy too much money to go there (here I would have to pay a few hundred a semester and there it would be almost 30,000 in just tuition fees) and also my average seems to be too low by exactly 0.1 to get in anyway so now I’m feeling kinda shitty…I have a backup plan but it still kinda sucks
in much more fun news eurovision is in a month and having all of the songs to listen to I have to say thats its a pretty decent year overall but I don’t think there’s one song that really stands out across the board for both juries and televoters….I think finland is gonna be the televoters favourite and sweden is gonna sweep the jury vote (they love sweden anyway and they adore loreen) but I still think france could do really well with both but we’ll see. I just hope we won’t be last again
-🌻
YAYYYY THAT'S SO EXCITING I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU! I tried looking up resetting rates but I have 0 experience in either finance or physics so I'm not sure how to help on that but for plotting I would recommend using plotly!! It's a really clean looking data viz library, the same one I used for the MrBeast/Dream data and it's relatively intuitive! Good luck though it sounds tough but I believe in u 🫡
I hope everything works out on the masters' end though, I have to start thinking about that soon and I'm LOST rn trying to figure out exactly where I want to go/what to do so I get the struggle—private universities are annoying when it comes to tuition and it's rough ngl (like my uni's sticker price like $85k a year which is nuts who the fuck would be able to pay that without aid???? why do universities hate us smh) <333
I haven't even thought of esc in a hot minute, I still need to get onto listening to sm but I've seen salty say the year isn't anything special and I trust her on that since she's the resident escposter around dtblr LOL I do hope France does well bc the song fucking slays
#I've been listening to marco mengoni's album recently and it's amazing#like due vite is good but the other songs on there are sm fun#good luck with everything!! cheering u on <333#lyss answers#🌻 tag

Good morning, folks, and welcome to the beginning of my coverage of Eurovision 2018! We start by looking, not quite yet at gender or languages in the contest as is most traditional, but my taking a quick look back at ESC 2011.
You may wonder why such an unconventional choice, when most Eurovision fans’ attention is understandably focused on what will be focused on what will be going down in Lisbon in fewer than 40 days from now. My reason is this - in all my years observing and analysing ESC, I have not so strongly felt that the result is in the air since the free-for-all that was Düsseldorf 2011.
Since the all-conquering victory of Loreen in 2012, it’s become a near general assumption that Eurovision is won by collecting a broad amount of maximum points. In every year from 2012-2017, the winner of the contest overall has been the song with the most 12s or someone who came very close (Denmark, second in the 12s in 2013, and Ukraine, second in the televote 12s but top of the jury 12s in 2016.) In 2011, this was not the case. Azerbaijan picked up a paltry 3 maximum points, behind Italy and Bosnia and tied with Denmark, Georgia, Ireland and Ukraine. The douzes were exceptionally scattered, with almost half the field getting at least one twelve, of which 13 countries got 2 or more maximal points. Compare that to just 7 in 2012 and 2013, 6 in 2014 and 2015, 7 jury/10 televote in the 2016 and 8 jury/9 televote in 2017.
Even when disregarding douzes, Azerbaijan didn’t fare extraordinarily, with Italy outperforming them in terms of numbers of countries where it scored the highest number of points compared to the others in the top 6. And yet they got a surprise victory off a number of middling scores from a wide array of countries - something which I have a strong feeling will repeat in 2018.
There are a number of things that give me this feeling: * The big favourites all have Achilles heels: At the moment, there are only a handful of songs being given 5% or better odds by the bookmakers, with Israel standing imperiously above them all with around 33% odds of winning according to the current average of odds, followed by the songs from Estonia (16%) and Czechia (12%). These are three Marmite songs that have divided tastes amongst everyone I know, and whilst I may be proven completely wrong, I cannot personally see either of them sweeping both juries ánd televote.
* The field is very musically diverse: We have a surprising number of genres and styles represented in this year’s Eurovision. ESC countries’ jurors and televoters can be quite different from one another in terms of how receptive they are to different genres, leading to a more diffuse distribution of points.
* A boost to linguistic diversity: Harken back to the end of the 00s and start of the 10s and we can see regional and cultural pockets that were often traduced as evidence of “bloc voting.” In fact, they were just reflections of shared language and musical heritage - as evidenced by the fact that these pockets have been nowhere near as pronounced in recent years with the likes of the Balkans switching en masse to English. This year is the most linguistically diverse since 2013, which I feel will lead to a greater dispersal of twelve points.
Will 2018 be the next 2011? We will have to wait until rehearsals start to get underway to get a true handle on this - in the last few years, it’s been then that big bookies’ favourites have stumbled and dark horses have emerged - but for now, my feeling is that this year could be the first one since ‘11 where the winner is not just a surprise compared to what we thought pre-rehearsals, but also a surprise on the night.

OKAY so @dahdeemohn tagged me in the “10 Songs You LOVE” AKA “YOU EXPECT ME TO NARROW IT DOWN TO 10 NOOOOO!”
Let’s see how I fare...
1: Alan Walker - “Faded”
A melancholy piano-led song about a lost love, them being lost to the singer just like (of all things) the city of Atlantis.
“These shallow waters never met what I needed; I'm letting go...a deeper dive Eternal silence of the sea, I'm breathing...alive...where are you now? Under the bright but faded lights, you set my heart on fire...”
2: Elbow - “One Day Like This”
A sweeping, triumphant song that encapsulates the feeling of the moment when you realise that you are completely in love with another person.
“'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes...and only now I see the light Yeah, lying with you half awake...stumbling over what to say Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day...”
3: Bis - Eurodisco
An upbeat song about the brevity of fame and fads and how it can affect a person.
“The party's at it's end...a style is named and it's dead There is no latest trend...I eat just what I'm fed If it's a new beginning, then I don't want to know If it's not worth pretending, then I don't want to know I'm just so sick of listening, why should I want to know I lost my 15 minutes on Eurodisco...”
4: CHVRCHES - “The Mother We Share”
Seeking closure from any source that might never come. The only thing they have in common now is living on Mother Earth.
“Into the night, for once we’re the only ones left I bet you even know, where we could go... And when it all fucks up, you put your head in my hands It’s a souvenir for when you go.... Come in misery, where you can seem as old as your omens And the mother we share will never keep your proud head from falling...”
5: Lisa Miskovsky - “Still Alive”
The theme song from the video game, Mirror’s Edge. A song about overcoming adversity and coming out of the ordeal stronger.
“Just sunshine, and blue sky...is this all we get, for living here? Come fire...come fire...let it burn, and love come racing through... Oh I'm still alive, I'm still alive and I cannot apologise, no...“
6: Franz Ferdinand - “Take Me Out”
That nerve-wracking first encounter, and how easily rejection can bring one down.
“So if you're lonely, you know I'm here waiting for you I'm just a cross-hair, I'm just a shot away from you And if you leave here, you leave me broken, shattered I lie I'm just a cross-hair, I'm just a shot, then we can die I know I won't be leaving here with you...”
7: Deepest Blue - “Give It Away”
When you slowly realise your feelings might be stronger than you first anticipated and you don’t quite know how to react.
“Don't ever forget to tell somebody The feelings inside to make your dreams come true...I dream of you To feel so alive and want somebody It's not make believe, my world would be for you...and only you... You make me fall and I can't sleep, you want it all but it's too deep And I can't give it away, I just can't give it away...”
8: Loreen - “My Heart Is Refusing Me”
Following your heart might not always be the correct course of action, however.
“I've been crushed, beaten down...and I'm frozen to the ground Like a fool, I've trusted you...still I'm hopelessly in love I never thought that I would be this helpless...I can't believe I'm giving in for you I've been crushed, I've had enough... And I wanna leave but I'm lost...now I can't break away Although I've made up my mind...my heart is refusing me...”
9: Katy B - “Crying For No Reason”
A sentiment too many of us can relate to.
“I push all my problems to the back of my brain A darkness deep inside where I just can't find my way How can I walk with a smile? Get on with my day When I deceived myself pretending it's all okay I tried my best to hold it all together, I know The strings have worn away and now I'm all exposed I try to hide it all away on top of the shelf I can lie to everyone but not to myself...”
10: Emma Hewitt - “Colours”
We cannot change the past, only move forward with the memories that have been created.
“All the colours that you bring, all come rushing back again All the places that we've been...this time... All the people that you knew, they'll come running back to you All the faces that we've seen...in this life... And we never took the time, to see where we were going We were only passing by... And we never questioned why, the river keeps on flowing The beauty of the ride... If I could call you for a day...just to hear the words you'd say I would...”
#music music music#i think these 10 had the most immediate emotional reaction to me?#although eurodisco is just plain fun#that one really sticks out compared to the other 9#oh well!#andy walker#elbow#bis#CHVRCHES#lisa miskovsky#franz ferdinand#deepest blue#loreen#katy b#emma hewitt
