Listed: Infinite River
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Coombe
Infinite River is what happens when four veterans of the Detroit underground find themselves with a little extra time on their hands. Coming together during pandemic times, Gretchen Gonzales Davidson (Slumber Party, Universal Indians), Joey Mazzola (Sponge, Detroit Cobras), Warn Defever (His Name Is Alive) and Steve Nistor (Sparks, Daniel Lanois) let the music start to flow, using guitar, harmonium, tanpura and percussion to create a sound that’s equal parts arcing, droning and shimmering. “Their brand of drift is especially soothing and sublime,” Bryon Hayes wrote of their debut album Prequel, calling it “the perfect prescription for the current zeitgeist.” And the good news about that is: with at least two more full-lengths on the way (Space Mirror is due next, on August 18th), there’s enough to go around for everyone.
Speaking of spreading the love, guitarist Gonzales Davidson does some of that below with a list of some of her favorite music, much of which you’re sure to hear traces of in Infinite River’s sound.
Funkadelic — Maggot Brain
youtube
Funkadelic’s first few are just mind-blowing but this one… this one with the opening monologue and then that sundown-on-an-eclipsing-universe guitar solo. Just… damn.
Seventh Sons — 4am at Frank’s
youtube
I could put many ESP releases on this list: Godz 2, Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity, Cromagnon…. all make the world we drive through a little more chaotic and knowing. But Seventh Sons…this record shatters so many music genres in a true celebration of life. It is a crazy record. It is a perfect record.
The Flaming Lips — American Head
youtube
I have loved the Flaming Lips for a long, long time and admire their ability to keep releasing incredible music after all these years. This newest one is full of beautifully catchy melodies wrapped up in what seems to be dark, autobiographical subject matter… there is some heartbreaking stuff on here. And yet the music rises above and provides an epic experience.
Can — Tago Mago
youtube
Nothing much to say about perfection. Tago Mago is perfection. How the hell did anyone ever create something of this beauty? Just the first few tracks alone…those drums on “Paperhouse” — those drums that define Krautrock– FUUHHHHHKKKK — and then going right into “Mushroom”… taking off to Venus with a beat that is almost impossible to define. I love putting Tago Mago on the car stereo when trekking through the desert, watching the world around me turn alien.
The Dead C — The White House
youtube
How can I say it more clearly: yes, this is the album from Dead C that brought all of their weirdness together beautifully however, anything Michael Morley touches… one of the main Dead C members… is worth a deep gander. His new record, in the guise of the band Gate… is brilliant as well. I remember when Universal Indians opened for the Dead C in Detroit, and thinking — life could not get better. Galen, Aaron Dilloway’s band, was also opening, and it was so funny because Justin Allen, another Galen member, was grounded that night so they had to play without him. Anyway, The Dead C has been one of my favorites since the 1990s.
Simon Finn — Pass the Distance
youtube
The ultimate in stream-of-consciousness freaky folk music, Simon Finn’s Pass The Distance is a beautiful train ride through an enhanced artistic mind.
And a couple songs to consider for your listening pleasure…
Loren Mazzacane Connors — “Haunted House”
youtube
LMC has crafted such a unique guitar style, that he is sometimes overlooked in the grander discussion of life-after-John-Fahey. But don’t let that stop you from digging into his genius. “Haunted House” is his dark, sultry beautiful version of the blues… oh damn that slide guitar and his whispered vocals. Gives me chills every time.
Dino Valente — “Children of the Sun”
youtube
The rough life of Dino Valente, the original singer for Quicksilver Messenger Service who was thrown in jail for pot possession (oh sorry…FLOWER possession…should use the new lingo) right as the band was taking off. He would end up getting released and playing with them again. But it is his solo record that I love the most… with the songs of tough knowledge bleeding everywhere. This song is devastating. How does he produce an operatic tragedy in the confines of a song with just a guitar and vocals? WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF THE SUN!
William Onyeabor — “Atomic Bomb”
youtube
I love the crazed funk that William lays down. “Body and Soul” is another great track of his… worth listening to… but “Atomic Bomb” — what the HELL is that sound he is putting together? It is not of this time… yet not of the time it came from. Did Randy Newman get sucked into an effects pedal? How much acid is in the water in Onyeabor’s Nigerian homeland? I mean… how did he make this groovy sound? I listen to it… I take it in… I love it… I get down… wayyyyyy down… and I have no idea how it exists.

54: Kath Bloom & Loren Mazzacane (Connors) // Moonlight
Tumblr media
Moonlight Kath Bloom & Loren Mazzacane (Connors) 1984, St. Joan (Bandcamp)
Despite Moonlight’s tones being quite hushed, and both Kath Bloom’s vocals and Loren Mazzacane Connors’ guitar being, we could say, adventurous with regard to pitch, any time I throw this album on as background music conversation tends to gradually trail off, and my guest will look at me perplexedly and say something like, “Why is this so fucking good?” Which, I think, is one of the main reasons to buy LPs, whether you’re DJing with wax or just the sort to get a bit pouty when a visitor wants to stream something instead of playing with your carefully alphabetized collection.
On that count, Moonlight is indispensable. Released on a private press label in 1984, Moonlight was the final collaboration between self-taught guitarist/songwriter Kath Bloom and Loren Connors (billed at the time as Loren Mazzacane), an avant-garde acoustic blues/folk guitarist. The recordings are so sparse you can occasionally hear a woody creak break through, like a rocking chair or someone stepping on an old floorboard. Bloom’s voice is an airy thing, seeming to billow and drift of its own accord, even up to high white notes that threaten to move out of hearing. Connors lets Bloom’s steady, dreamy fingerpicking carry the melody, using his own instrument to duet with her vocal. I suspect the appeal of Bloom as a partner was in the challenge of translating her instinctive vocalizations to his guitar. His lead lines share her wandering spirit, plucked sequences of panged off-notes that ring true.
youtube
There are moments that have the outsider joy of Daniel Johnston’s music, with its childlike directness and strange lyrical perceptiveness, like closer “Love Makes it All Worthwhile”:
“Every night it’s the same old thing He puts it in And then he takes it out again You might be closer Closer if you do Maybe he just wants some more of you It’s love Makes a difference It’s love Makes it all worthwhile”
“Breathe in my Ear” doesn’t develop much further than its chorus of “Breathe in my ear / I love you,” but Connors’ guitar and the sound of the players’ shifting in their chairs combine to create a warm impression of bodies moving on a well-worn mattress. Other songs are bolted together a little more firmly, but feel no less sublime for it, like “You Cleared Up the Sky,” where Connors takes a long, bluesy solo and you sense Bloom listening with soft wonder to what he plays. At time of writing there were only a handful of vinyl copies remaining of Chapter Music 2019’s reissue on their Bandcamp (well, there are exactly five, so let’s say you have large hands), so if you’re interested it might do you to pick one up sooner rather than later. Do it for your guests.

PAL-076 Zoh Amba / Chris Corsano / Bill Orcutt LP
"The Flower School"
The Flower School by Zoh Amba & Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt
BUY LP
Since exploding on the improvised music scene a couple of years ago Tennessee native Zoh Amba has found herself engaging with an ever-widening group of collaborators as she tours across the US and Europe. She’s forged some enduring partnerships, working regularly with drummer Chris Corsano, bassist Thomas Morgan, and pianist Micah Thomas, among others, but one of the deep pleasures of improvised music is when a first- time meeting produces sparks. Indeed, that’s certainly the case with The Flower School, which bottles some serious lightning. In March of 2023 Amba and Corsano had finished up a duo tour of the west coast with an explosive performance in San Francisco. The next day the duo entered the studio with guitarist Bill Orcutt—a trusted collaborator of the drummer stretching back a decade. It was the first time Orcutt and Amba had ever played together, but it sure doesn’t seem that way.
Although Amba has often recorded a bunch of tune-oriented albums for Tzadik she’s a free improviser at heart, and this trio arguably provides the most effective, elastic context for her playing yet. Yet what’s most astonishing about The Flower School is how it elevates and transforms the playing of all three participants. It appears that there was more than enough trust in the room to allow each player to push-and-pull. Anyone who pays attention already knows that Orcutt and Corsano are mercurial figures, perpetually adapting, adjusting, and challenging one another so that every performance by their duo seems to spring from a different inspirational source. Inviting a third person to the party could threaten a slowly cultivated balance—whether between Orcutt and Corsano or Corsano and Amba—but in this case the addition only heightened various dichotomies: soft vs. loud, bruising vs. tender, furious vs. lyric.
Much has been made of Amba’s debt to the free jazz of 1960’s, particularly the way her vibrato-drenched tone dips into valley of sacred music, but here she carves out a space that’s entirely hers. On tracks like “The Morning Light Has Flooded My Eyes” and “What Emptiness Do You Gaze Upon!” she reveals a meticulously sharpened gift for motific improvisation, taking a single phrase and chiseling away it until she’s discovered every possible permutation, all the while driven by the feverish energy and empathy of her cohorts. This group also displays Orcutt’s masterful support skills, as he often takes a single chord or two, letting them float in mutate in the background or splintering them into patient, reserved arpeggios that ripple alongside Corsano’s circular sculptures and the saxophonist’s edgy blowing. Two of the album’s five tracks are duets between Orcutt and Amba. The collection is bisected by “Sweet One,” a delicate lattice formed by Orcutt’s tremulous electric guitar arpeggios and Amba’s spike acoustic pointillism that basks in its own leisurely beauty for a couple of restorative minutes, while the album closer “Moon Showed But No You” is a searingly beautiful ballad where the guitarist unspools clusters of notes somewhere between vintage Loren Mazzacane Connor and a distorted kalimba, while Amba puts an upwardly arcing melodic line through its paces, finding new wrinkles at every turn. Here’s hoping that this recording is the start of something, but even if this album is the beginning and end, the level of communication and rapport feels eternal.
