Lorenzo Lotto (Italian) • Venus and Cupid • c. 1520s • The Met
In this startling and playful painting, Cupid devilishly urinates on his mother Venus through a laurel wreath—an act that symbolizes fertility. The provocative tone of the picture speaks to the growing popularity of eroticism in European art at the time, owing in part to the rediscovery of ancient texts. Lotto likely took inspiration from ancient Roman poetry that describes Cupid waking Venus so that she may preside over a wedding. Her crown, veil, and pearl earring are all items commonly worn by brides in sixteenth-century Venice, indicating that this was probably painted to commemorate a marriage. Venus’s distinctive features suggest that it may be a portrait of the bride. – Metropolitan Museum of Art

Lorenzo Lotto (1480-1556/1557) "Portrait of a Man, possibly Girolamo Rosati" (1533-1534) Oil on canvas High Renaissance Located in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, United States The depicted gesture of the elegantly dressed man is a mystery; is he rising from his chair to address someone or is he pointing to something outside the frame? His right hand rests on a piece of paper, while on the table are clover—a symbol of abundance, good fortune, and happy marriage—and jasmine, associated with purity and love, further emphasized by the roses on the trellis. There may have been a companion portrait of the man’s bride, to whom he's acknowledging his devotion. Another recent interpretation identifies the sitter as Girolamo Rosati, a high official in Fermo, on Italy’s east coast. The paper may be a design for one of his important architectural projects, to which he may be pointing in the distance. The interrupted moment is a naturalistic touch characteristic of Lotto, quite distinct from the formality of other Italian Renaissance portraits.

Lorenzo Lotto (1480 - 1556) was an Italian painter, draughtsman, and illustrator who is traditionally thought to be part of the Venetian school though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance (1490-1520) and the first half of the Mannerist period (1520-1600) though his work maintained a High Renaissance style throughout his career. For all that, his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transition toward the Florentine and Roman Mannerists.
