Lunch Vibes 💯 . Sumika in Los Altos remains one of my fave all-time lunch spots . I don’t often get a chance to stop by on weekday but the location in sleepy downtown Los Altos always seems to be a hidden find . There is both indoor and outdoor dining and both appear to be popular on Tock for reservations . I snuck a spot in at the counter and ordered my all-time favorite oyakodon, runny egg . They’ve expanded lunch to include skewer items and I supplemented my generous lunch order with skewers of spicy momo (chicken thigh) and tsukune with cheese . Bao Wow 💯 . Finally had a chance to stop by State Street Market in Los Altos, the newest and largest food hall in the peninsula . It’s a gorgeous space with plentiful indoor and outdoor seating in an open and airy high ceiling venue that will be perfect for gatherings large and small . There are a variety of food and drink vendors but one of the anchor establishments is definitely Bao Bei, a Taiwanese Korean restaurant from the husband and wife team of the former Michelin star Maum . I arrived early to sample their signature baos and noodles and left impressed . The large spicy pork belly bao is cooked perfectly with a melt in your mouth richness paired with a very subtle heat . But the fried shrimp bun is the star despite its modest appearance. The large shrimp paste is hidden beneath the slaw and its deep fried flavor has me wanting another as I type . A5 Wagyu Katsu Sando . One of my bucket list food items this year was to try the decadent and elusive A5 Wagyu Sando in Japan . I had two restaurants in Tokyo picked out to try for a reservation and even tried to make a very poor (but $$) rendition at home . Of course, COVID put all those frivolous things on the back burner, but the Bay Area being an amazing place where things from around the world gather presented an opportunity to try that very sando . Hiroshi is normally an ultra-exclusive restaurant with a single table for 8 and a price point of $500+/person that caters more to the tech elite, but with SIP, they have a very limited and unprecedented takeout offering on Tock . Oyakodon to Go 🐔 . Sumika is a long time favorite for both lunch and for dinner . During this Shelter in Place, they’re still open for takeout and their lunch menu is more extensive than ever, from their signature house salad and Oyakodon to their sister restaurant Orenchi’s ramen . They even have binchotan items that are normally only served for dinner . Dining Institution 💯 . Growing up, I’d often hear stories of classmates who would dine often to Chef Chu’s and loved the cuisine . Truth be told, I long thought the restaurant catered to a different demographic than my own, but as I visited much more often as an adult, ofteb with my parents, we learned it could cater to both the area and the authenticity of the homeland .
