First Dance

Éomer felt foolish for thinking about the girl he’d seen longer after he should’ve stopped. However, there was something about her eyes that had captured him in a way no enemy had ever been able to.

He couldn’t believe he was still thinking about it.

“Éomer!” Amrothos slapped his shoulder, almost making him spill his wine. “How are you old friend?”

“Sober.” Éomer pointed out, his voice full of amusement.

“I’m sorry about that.” Amrothos quipped back without missing a beat. “Have you met my sister?”

“I haven’t. Your father told me she wasn’t feeling so well earlier.”

Amrothos snorted. “That’s not true. Lotty always uses this excuse when she’s doing something she shouldn’t, likely visiting one of the villages or swimming somewhere.”

“What?” Éomer felt his heart skipping a beat. The princess enjoyed swimming? It couldn’t be. It was just a big coincidence.

“There she is!” Amrothos waved at someone. “She probably had enough time to clean up.”

Éomer followed Amrothos, trying to figure out who he was looking at, until he saw Echírion, another one of the princes, and a lady with dark hair.

“Lotty, come meet Éomer.” Amrothos called as soon as they were closer.

And when she turned…

Yes, it was her. The girl from the waterfall. Up close she was even prettier.

Éomer had to hold on to every bit of his self control not to say something that would put both of them in a complicated position with her family. “My Lady.”

Her cheeks were incredibly red, but she curtsied prettily. “Your Majesty. It’s an honor to have you here.”

“I’m the one honored by your family’s friendship.” He told her honestly. Éomer saw Amrothos and Echirion exchanging glances, and knew they were about to ask questions -it was quite obvious there was something there -so he did something impulsive. “Would you care for a dance, Princess?”

Princess Lothíriel seemed startled by the question. “Yes, of course.” She answered, even though it seemed it was a reflex, not because she’d actually understood his question and wanted to dance with him. Éomer would take what he could get.

“Let’s go.” He offered her his hand.

Once she put her small hand on his much larger one, Éomer had to wonder once again: was he ever going to be unaffected by this girl’s mere presence?

First Meeting

It was the sound of commotion that drew Éomer’s attention. When he reached his men, he saw what they had found: a maiden in a waterfall.

It seemed like a scene out of a book, and Amrothos had repeatedly told him about mermaids in Dol Amroth, but this lady was clearly just a woman, who was obviously scared with many riders surrounding her.

“Give her space.” Éomer ordered as he dismounted his horse.

She was partially hiding behind a rock, clearly uncomfortable with so many men eyeing her.

Éomer gave them all a warning glare, before clearing his throat. “I’m sorry for my men. I’m sure they didn’t mean to intrude on you.”

She was remarkably beautiful with her dark brown hair and big eyes. Éomer wasn’t sure what color they were, but they seemed to be just as ethereal as her. “It is fine.” She said softly, but still refusing to move from her position.

“Here.” Éomer took off his cape and offered to her. “It isn’t as clean as a lady deserves, but it’ll cover you.”

He held still for a minute, as she seemed to weight down her options. Eventually -carefully -she extended her arm -pale, delicate, fragile -and accepted the garment.

Éomer watched as she used it to cover herself, and finally come out from her hiding spot. “Thank you, my lord.” She nodded shyly at him.

“You are more than welcome, my lady.” He wanted to ask her name, where she was from, why was she here alone swimming. However, he realized it may make him look overbearing.

“We are from Rohan.” He told her kindly.

“I know.” She told him, her voice soft. “We don’t see light hair around here.”

He chuckled. “I guess you don’t.”

She looked around her, and Éomer noticed she wanted to leave. He couldn’t judge her.

“Farewell, my lady.” He bowed to her.

She gave him a tentative smile. “Farewell, my lord.”

Éomer had a feeling he wouldn’t forget her face anytime soon.
